so,
friday being good friday, and me having visitors from good catholic ireland for the weekend, i've decided to try the home made fish'n'chips on friday night...
i'm not usually a big fan of fish, but reading about
don rina's bier batter and
don rina's posh fish'n'chips has put me in the mood...
so where is the best plaice (phnarr

) to buy fish in munich???
is there a best time of day to go? (maybe too early and they haven't had their delivery or too late and all the nice stuff is gone???)
i'm thinking about plaice or cod in particular...

Surprisingly,
Walmart or if you're a member,
Metro ... have an impressive selection of fish.
Now I'm craving "chicken from the sea" ...

I guess I found this thread a bit too late to help you and your mates, but for what it's worth, I've always found what I've needed at
Fischwitwe and
Poseidon in the
Viktualienmarkt. If you have really exotic wishes they can also get you pretty much anything, provided you put in an order with enough advance notice. I slightly prefer Poseidon, as I feel more listened to there. As soon as they realize you're doing a sushi night they even switch to the Japanese names without missing a beat.
Having said that, I've not canvassed the entire town. There might be an excellent selection in other corners, but I'm not a fan of travelling so I haven't looked farther than the center.

thanks for the info,
i went with the walmart solution as i was passing it on the way to the airport anyway, and i wasn't disappointed... nice clean and juicy hallibut... no bones... reasonably priced...
the fish and chips evening was a success, i little bit time consuming though (i cooked for 5)... but i'll be better prepared next time...
it took until sunday to clear the apartment of the smell of oil though...

Careful of Walmart.
Had some reasonably good cod from there, but also bought a kilo of mussels, and they were ALL dead. Frightful.
Poseidon is probably the best IMHO.

Does anyone know of a really good fish market or restaurant?
I love fresh fish (esp. raw tuna...ummm yummy) but being a long way from the sea it's proving difficult to find the good source.
Thanks

All the shops on
Viktualienmarkt. I've been to some of the Kaufhof / Kaufhaus gourmet markets, but the fish wasn't anything I'd eat raw.
Or you could come here to Iceland. The fish is so fresh that when they serve it you have to stab it a few times just to make sure.
woof.

I'd love to know where to buy fresh fish too.
My boyfriend refuses to eat anything that has gills or tentacles unless maybe it is ultra, ultra fresh (as in, still looking at you).
I think maybe he was molestered by a fish as a child.
Dunno, but I really miss eating sea-food so if I could find somewhere to get fresh stuff that'd be great.
Also, any suggestions (like recipes, cooking methods etc?) on how to slowly wean a man back onto a sea-food diet would also be appreciated. I've heard swordfish doesn't taste very 'fishy' and might be a good place to start.

Speaking of which, I hear chess legend Bobby Fischer will be heading your way. That´d be a great episode of the Iceland Diaries...

well, if you're in schwabing, at elizabeth markt on Nordend str. There is a big Nordsee shop, and right behind it theres an even better fish shop ( a bit cheaper and very fresh) There is lots of nice stuff to choose from as long as you're feeling rich!

Best place I have found is a Turkish fishmonger in the little bazaar in front of the old Fruchthof, Sendling. Picked up a choice sea bass on Saturday, and was eyeing up the big cod fillets thinking, hmmm... deep fryer, batter. It's very fresh, and they will gut and clean the fish in front of you. Closed Mondays.

Hamburger Fisch Market in Munich 05th-16th May at Sendlinger Tor
But they sell almost no fresh fish atall. Its all stalls flogging a few deep fried shrimp, and the ubiquitous "Aal Dieter" peddling his wares and proudly displaying pictures of him and famous peeps above his selection of smoked-eel based products. They only sell pils on any of the stalls, and its not really a market atall.
I was in the wee little Japanese place across from the Hofbrauhaus a while back, and saw an advert that they were opening a supermarket which would also sell good quality fish for Japanese cooking. Cannot remember the name of the place, but go down there and take a look or ask the staff. Also eat something when you are there. Well nice.
More tea, Vicar?

For amazing Japanese Sushi, Maki etc. there's a restaurant opposite the EuropaReisen center on Thomas-Wimmer-Ring at Isartor.
Quite pricey (paid €70 for two - Sake, drinks, a hot dish, and two large sushi combo's) - but cheaper than London by a country mile and the fish and the service and the presentation were quite exceptional.

We buy fish from the guy right on the lake...Pilsen See...short walk from the S-bahn, Seefeld-Hechendorf stop...walk towards the lake, on the main road...walk just past the lake, then turn right...there's a sign for fish right about there...

Does anyone know of a reputable source for buying wild fish? Being so far inland, I am nervous that much of the fish for sale here in Munich is farmed and therefore potentially toxic (mercury levels etc.) Wjere i come from, chain stores are often the biggest cuplrits of poor quality fish as well so I am steering clear of those until I know better. My german skills are pretty lame as i have just arrived here, so even some help on how to ask the shop assistant in German would be very helpful. Thanks all!

Being so far inland means that fish is gonna be more likely frozen, sure, but even living on the coast you are gonna come across a similar level of farmed fish. Mussles? Almost always farmed these days.
Even wild fish is contaminated with mercury, but I would imagine that in super-eco-friendly Germany, the amount of drugs and hormones used in fish farms is way lower than elsewhere - lets face it, you cannot even wash your car in the street here for fear of evil soap polluting the sewers (??!?!) so I doubt the government is going to let fish farmers tip shitloads of hormones into Germany's water table.

Well it's not just the merury and hormones. Yikes, there's antibiotics, dyes, anit- parasitic drugs...enough crap in there to make you want to stay right clear of fish altogether. I know at home there are very few reputable sources for buying truly wild fish. Consumers worldwide need to be wary of bogus organic labels, even in Germany. There is a LOT of marketing involved in the rise in organic products on the market. Yes, Germany is pretty green compared to other countries but if they are so vigilant about pollutants then why are so many readily available to the consumer? A package of cigarettes, for example, is more toxic than my favourite aerosol hair spray that I can not buy here. (I know, aerosols are terrible, but Im not up on some environmental high horse here- I do what I can. I just don't want to eat dirty fish!!!)

Anyone know a place to buy fresh fish in Solln? Southwest part of the city. I hate to always have to drive into the city only to get a piece of salmon!
