Anyone going out on the Thursday before Easter Friday will get to see something pretty funny at the stroke of midnight.
The Pope or someone has apparently declared dancing and dance music immoral once midnight hits. All the music suddenly changes to some silly stuff, and everyone is ordered off the dance floors, which are sometimes even roped off.
The places try and stay open and people can still stand around and drink and talk, but most people just leave.
Does anyone know where in the bible it is mentioned that dancing in the early hours of Easter Saturday is immoral? Or is it just another Catholic power trip?
Does anyone know when the "Tanzverbot" ends? Because everything seems to be back to normal by Saturday night.

Yes, it's officially midnight to midnight all through Good Friday.
When I lived in Britain (Newcastle) there were no discos on Good Friday and of course in Ireland all the pubs are shut.
You're not even supposed to play "happy" music on Good Friday.
There's a couple of other days that are similar in Bavaria too.
Of course, some of the clubs will be buzzing away behind closed doors if you know where to go and can get past the bouncer. ie Don't look like a policeman or Kreisverwaltungs Twunt!

In Australia everything is closed on the Friday and Monday. No pubs or clubs at all. Lots of house parties. I think Sat and Sunday have normal trading hours though. I think... is this right fellow aussies?

For once I'll be glad to be back in good ol' Essex - nothing changes, in fact, if anything, more people go out than usual...

Yeah I certainly don't remember shit being closed over Easter. In fact don't they all have Easter parties in clubs?
Oh God I love England and the lack of religion in our lives! (that's not sarcastic btw.)

Hi
just bringing up this thread from last year as by law
(see here) there is no dancing or music allowed on Good Friday.
It is a "stilles Tag" as you are all meant to be sad about that bloke with the bits of wood. Or something.
Anything which does not fit the sombre mood of the day is banned:QUOTE
Karfreitag (Hinweis: Am Karfreitag ist jede Art von Musikdarbietungen in Räumen mit Schankbetrieb ausnahmslos verboten. Ferner sind Sportveranstaltungen verboten.)
Have fun (I'll be in England HURRAH)

easter weekend is fast becoming a big weekend out for partying - second only to christmas eve, in my book

A club I sometimes frequent tried to open last Good Friday with you having to give a nod and a wink to the bouncer as it were to get in. But it got busted by the police.
I'll be on 50 cent pints in Slovakia anyway!
Surely Toytowners can manage one Friday without disco carnage?

I'll be in Iceland, a place that in 1550 sent a pretty clear message that Catholicism wasn't welcome and that the Lutheran Reformation was how things were going to work. Jón Arason, the last Catholic priest, was beheaded after his two sons. It was by all accounts pretty grisly.
I expect to be enjoying many pints of very tasty and very expensive Icelandic beer tomorrow night.
Of course, Friday night almost no one even goes out before 11 (they drink at home or in small parties at someone's house), so a ban until midnight wouldn't mean much anyway.
woof.

*ponders* how can this be a federal law ? I'm not religious .. does it apply to Muslims or Jews or Sikhs or or... living in Germany as well? *confused* if i ignore it will i get busted?
Yeti
Mar 23 2005, 11:48 am
It's not a federal law, it only applies to areas with a predominantly Right-Wing-raving-Catholic population. (opps the stoiber filter on my keyboard was off there for a sec).
Anyway the main problem is people swinging crucifixes in discos. Apparently more people have been killed this way than through donkey kicks or something.

You can dance at home as long where you are dancing does not contain a public bar giving out drinks.
So as long as your flat does not contain a public bar, you should be able to have that music on and groove. Not too loudly though, eh? Mind the neighbours.
Applies to all and you Angel have been in Bayern long enough to know that what the Catholics want, the Catholics get here.

wait, help me understand: so there's no dancing on good friday. does this mean at midnight, officially the beginning of saturday, clubs will open? or that thursday night at midnight-beginning-friday everything will close?
I think its the latter. From midnight thursday till midnight friday, my original post was out by one day, and grtho corrected me.

Legally I think it is midnight to midnight.
But based on the club I sometimes frequent:
Thursday night they will be open so actually dancing in the early hours of Good Friday.
Friday night they will be closed even though a lot of dancing could be taking place after midnight outside of Good Friday.
SOME discos do a trick of opening at the stroe of midnight at the end of Good Friday.
You really HAVE to check the posters at your local arse-wiggling establishement!

Yes I found this to be pretty weird myself being a protestsant from America. But unfortunately as long as the right wing conservative catholic types are the ones in charge here in Bavaria, this won't change anytime soon. But anyway, I have to work the whole weekend. If I can't have any fun, I see no reason why anyone else should either!

I was gone last week and missed this thread, so I'm weighing in late.
I think that this "Tanzverbot" is in effect starting at midnight before all Catholic holidays (so also Oct. 31-Nov 1, etc.) If I'm not mistaken, they are enforcing it especially strictly now that the clubs are allowed to stay open later every other night of the year. There was a deal struck: clubs can stay open later but NOT the night before religious holidays and through the holiday itself.

I was actually thinking that if maybe all of the club and bar owners banded together and said "We think this is a stupid law" and are not going to obey it" Maybe the Bavarian government would take a second look. I don't think anyone can seriously prove that they are being harmed by letting people dance on religious holidays.

Spoke to the police and it is actaully a law which is punishable by a fine to any club/bar owner that choose to have loud music and dancing before the allowed time. Anyway, me thinks the church should stay the hell out of everyone's business. Quite frankly I'm sick to death of the Catholic Church and all their bullshit about how people should live. No wonder the number of Catholics is dropping steadily worldwide each year.

Clubs have tried to get around this by having a very strict door policy and only letting their regulars in etc but it never really works.

There is no such thing in the Bible even! Made up by Roman catholic church..for What..?
The Bible says that in the last days there will be people doing crazy things to show 'religiousness'..
like forbidding to marry, not eating certin foods..etc...etc..I guess this is one such nonsense...
Go Party!

Maybe someone should call a city council meeting and recite the same passages Kevin Bacon took from the bible in Footloose.
"there is a time to dance."
