I just got a free TV from a coworker and have just got it going. It's an OLD TV with an antenna input only and best I can tell won't go above channel 15 - literally won't go above that as in typing in when I enter 16 it just stays on 15 (but has a 20 button which would imply >15)..
Anyway, I plugged the thing into the wall and the picture quality smees pretty damn good for broadcast... and I get MTV, RTL, Spiegel TV, n-tv, tvm, D:SF, etc. Are those standard broadcast channels?? Makes me think I've got cable and don't even know it.

Yes those channels are coming through cable.
TV license fee funded government cable.
Your missing out on most of them with just a VHF tv though. Throw it away and buy one at the second hand shop with all UHF channels as well for 10 euros.

my tv, which also was given to me for free, only has 10 buttons on it so i had to program which ones i wanted. got rid of all thsoe annoying channel 3 programs (hr, bw, etc.). i am content with ard, zdf, rtl, rtl2, sat1, pro7, mtv, viva, dsf, cable1 and vox for all my tv viewing needs.
oh yeah, w/out cable you only get ard, zdf and maybe bw or bayern3.
Ahhh yes. Now I wonder if DrivinWest was talking about channels or presets. If he was talking about presets rather then channels, then maybe his tv does have UHF and all he needs to do is program them in.

I dislike them all personally, its either ads or some boring guy with glasses talking about politics or insurance. I download all my tv. In english, ad free and up to date.

I have cable, and get 34 channels.
About once every three months, I just configure the TV to look for new channels, and usually 9 times out of 10 up comes another channel.

Oh... I used to have Premiere (Germany's Satalite TV but my was through a cable) and that added about another 30 channels.

Sweet, I have cable! Now I just need a decent TV. I very well may just have 15 presets not channels, but there is no way to get above 15; not with the remote, not with the buttons on the TV itself, nothing.
I may program my iPAQ as a universal remote and give that a shot.
Either way, I should get a TV with something other than just an antenna/cable input anyway.

And it would have been a decent one too.

Some TVs allow you to limit the number of channels they display. Let's say, for instance your TV can actually store up to 50 channels, but (in the old days!) you could only actually receive 10. You store them in locations 1-10 then block off station memories 11-50, so when you channel surf you simply proceed 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-1-2-3- and so on... You may need to unblock channel memories higher than 15 (RTFM!)
Note also that Munich cable service use channels in the Hyper ("S") band. Many older TVs can't tune this high so limit the number of channels actually available. Those nice people at Munich cable do try to put the more "popular" channels (not including CNN) in the older, lower band...
