i just saw this film last night and was very impressed by the two main actors. but aside from appreciating what those two did to transform themselves into june carter & johnny cash, i can't decide if it was a good movie or just showcase for those two actors? i was never a fan of either of those two (reese is just sometimes too perky for my tastes), but i might take in more of joaquin's films in the future.

it would've been great to know what the man himself thought.

he chose Mr. Phoenix himself.

i know that much, yeah, but he didn't get to see the result. i was impressed by his singing. apparently he really trained & trained his voice & got down to an "unnatural" bass. to me that was impressive enough.

Reece sang pretty well, too, I think.

Thanks so much for posting this, Elf! I'd nearly forgotten that this had finally opened in Germany.

Now I know what I'm gonna be doing tonight

I've been looking forward to this movie for months... I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan, and Joaquin Phoenix is dead sexy. When I saw the film trailer and Joaquin walked onstage and said, "Hello, my name is Johnny Cash," my heart nearly stopped: he sounded just like the Man in Black!

I thought this was a well done movie. Interesting that the town where June finally on stage said 'yes' to Johns proposal was in London, Ontario.

It was great fun, I really enjoyed it.
Gutted that they didn't get a best film nomination, though - I hope the actors get some Oscar recognition.

EDIT - @ elf : I couldn't get Ring of Fire out of my head for the longest time afterwards, either.
Since seeing the film I've acquired the live album at Fulsom Prison, and very fab it is, too

I thought it was excellent. JP is incredible. Before watching the film I thought, how oculd they cast him? He is about six nches too short and his voice always seemed weak. I love him as an actor but I was surprised. But during this film I was impressed, he became Johnny Cash. There were two moments where I swore that it was JC and not JP. The scene right after he was arrested and his daughter asked, "Where you been?" And then one of the scenes on stage. He was brilliant.

I also felt that Reese did an acceptable job. The problem I have with her as an actress is that she over acts. it actually worked in this film since most of her acting was on stage with scripted lines, so the overacting was part of the character. But when she wasn't supposed to be on stage, she was not convincing, but then again her role was downplayed during those times as well. Great film. Great man. Great Story. And Elvis does talk a bit too much poon.

@elf: I've been listening to it all day on my ipod here at work too...I need some good Bavarian brass music (and a few Maß) to clear out my head...That will come tonight.

I have been trying to see this movie but something has always come up. Well it sounds good and I have been looking forward to it for a long time...and my daddy died young, working in a coal mine...

After seeing the movie I picked up a biography called "Johnny Cash: The Beast in Me" written by a guy called Franz Dobler. Can recommend it to anybody who's interested to learn more background info (don't be fooled by the title, though: the book is only available in German).
