Antonov 124 seen at Munich airport

Super-large cargo plane - Sunday 12.Feb.2006

Ken
Hi,

I was at Munich Airport on Sunday, February 12, and I saw an Antonov 124 taking off. I believe this is the largest cargo airplane. Does anyone know what it would be picking up/dropping off in Munich? I would imagine it would have to be something large.

Thanks,
Ken

I don't know about flights to and from Munich. But here's some general background information on the plane:

Nope.. The AN-225 is bigger..

Here are a bunch more pix - Clicky

These aircraft are operated/scheduled by a English company called Air Foyle-Heavylift Link

The AN225 was built to carry the Russian equiv. of the US space shuttle (The Buran).
More AN-225 info can be found Here

For heavy-load transport fans, this would've been a site worth seeing (sadly the project went bust due to lack of finances). They got as far as building the hangar at an old Russian Air Force base in Brandenburg. The airship would've been 260 metres long and capable of carrying 160 tons cargo POINT TO POINT, i.e. no need for a pesky infrstructure such as a runway.

IRISHBOY24
the largest is the ANTONOV AN225 mriya

@IB24

Well, this is the one that was at the airport. Supposedly a big one (like I know _anything_ about this) but airplane geek friend says he thinks it was just normal freight -or nothing spectacular at any rate.

bluedave
AN124 nothing special nowadays nor was it in it's prime. lots of better / bigger aircraft zb,. C5 etc
Jimbo
As to what it was doing, could it possibly be a UN thing? Watching the news last night i saw that they've evidently chartered a few of these things to get the international mission into Afghanistan...

Who knows what this is then:

Grinner

As to the original Question.. what was it doing in Munich?

It was probably bringing the next Pile of bullshit to be posted on TT laugh.gif
Darkknight
@Grinner
Then why does it have an american flag on it? I't looks like an old 1950's cargo or bomber thats been modified to
carry large carge, for NASA Perhaps before they went to the Modified 747..

The Airplane your thinking of (For Airbus) is called the Beluga. and looks
like This

The Beluga is a modified A300-600. More info can be found Here
bluedave
It's called a Super Guppy and both Airbus and NASA use them for cargo transport of large items.

It is a modification of the original Boeing Stratocruiser, there is one parked up at Airbus Hamburg as a "gate guard" having been now superceded by the Beluga aircraft ( commonly known as Thunderbirds 1 to 5 ).

OhFFS
Pregnant Guppy, according to the Goleta Air and Space Museum website shich is where the photo is from smile.gif
dancingsauerkraut
O my God, an airplane??? What at the airport? Someone save us!!!
Crawlie
Ah yes. The Guppy. Always used to somehow save me during heated games of Top Trumps.
DrivinWest
I've seen the Guppy several times in Houston where NASA employs it to move stuff around. There are few things that look more absurd cutting through the air than it.
bluedave
Well, after me singing it's praises one of the C5 Galaxies went and crashed on Monday in Delaware.

Happily none of the crew were killed although several were injured though, lots of scrap metal for somebody to weigh in wink.gif

C-5 Crashes in Delaware

QUOTE
The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane had taken off from Dover and crashed while attempting to return.

Television images showed the plane had broken into at least three pieces, with the cockpit separated at a right angle from the rest of the fuselage. The broken-off tail assembly was several hundred yards away, AP reported.
