After weeks of heavy snow falls, some of which have caused
roofs across Bavaria to collapse, the big thaw is predicted to start mid-February.
The ground remains frozen in many places though, so this means the melt-water can't be absorbed and instead flows away and swells the rivers. We could see floods coming in the next few days.
Keep an eye on the Bavarian flood water information service for updates,
Hochwassernachrichtendienst, and if the floods do arrive maybe we should all take refuge in
The Arc.

Last time we had flooding in Munich was in the summer. See previous TT topics:
July floods,
August floods, and
flood photos.

Let's all move to dugouts, the rain-soaked snow will lead to mass roof-collapsing. Hmm, landslides and avalanches, too. Dugout not such a good idea after all. Treehouse?

nope, not global warming, housing developers getting permission to build on flood plains that they were denied in the past, thereby affecting more people, thereby becoming more of a media issue.

arshoo, i think you'll be ok in the mountains even if the freezing level rises to around 1500m as predicted but 3 german weather sites reckon from wednesday onwards it could get unseasonally warm down here in the flatlands.
although i liked freising, our cellar had a propensity to flood (as we lived slap-bang next to the small river that ran through the middle of town). so the highlands of erding now seem appealing!!
i found the hochwassernachrichtendienst very interesting during the last flood particularily comparing the highest flow through munich/freising and that through passau. the donau must have been an incredible sight just downstream of the 3 rivers' confluence.

Aldi - but they only sell them in August or something. You have to think like a krout, and buy when
Aldi have stock, not when you actually need it.
I've just been out stumbling about the fields for the last hour or so, and its bloody horrible. Quite simply put, it was like a marshland. More like ponds than puddles, separated by landmass like reefs of ice. So you can go through the water, and get wet, or take your chances slipping on the ice.

Freak is a term of endearment for somebody who is highly informed and specialized regarding a certain field. If I wanted to insult them I would use the standard "bozo".

I came into Munich today from Regensburg and the country side creeks are already flooded. You can also see large batches of ice along the banks starting to melt very fast. I usually take this trip twice a week and for the last three months there have been a lot of places to ice skate. Well those large frozen patches of water are thawing also. If there is any sudden increases in warmth(along with the expected rain) then it should flood even more quickly. It rained really heavy here(Regensburg) this morning and there is a slight swell in the Danube.

That risk of flooding turned out to be rather a damp squib.
To be fair, river levels in the north of Bavaria were running high.

The thaw in the northern part of Bavaria is well and truly underway; the graphic below shows the water levels of the Danube in Donauwörth. The
Isar, though, has hardly risen at all, since the snow melts much more slowly in the alps.

I reckon we'll be alright in Munich.
From the looks of it, more than half the snow has melted already and apart from a lot of offensive puddles (particularly where you want to cross the road), it's not too bad...
Small Town Boy
Mar 10 2006, 3:42 pm
Although of course the water level of the
Isar in Munich is determined by the rate of melting in the Alps. Howver, the snow normally melts at a fairly consistent rate, so spring flooding is the exception rather than the rule.
It's
rain snowing again...
