No one stops me between other eu countries but PL to DE they stop you. - now in 2006 I dont know - is there any VAT diff between PL and say, Netherlands? I would hate to get a 250 Eu tax to bring my dining table from Poland into germany. Any adventorous TTers dabble in this direction?

You will not be charged extra VAT within the EU..

The POINT of the EU, it's "raison d'etre" is a common market.
You can buy any product for your personal use and move it how you like.
Importing into the EU should attract a standard rate of duty but there are differences in the way goods are handled between countries.
There are no general customs between Poland etc and Germany because of the free flow of goods.
But becausee there are still limits on the ammmount of tobacco you can import as well as a general fear of illegal weapons / drugs etc etc the German customs still operate along the eastern borders. As Poland isn't in Schengen, there are passport controls between Germany and Poland.

As said above, generally you just pay VAT in country of purchase and can then import throughout the EU. There are exceptions to this. As Monkstown pointed out, there are still agreements regarding the import of tobacco (and perhaps also alcohol) from the new member states to the original 15. Also VAT is due on motor vehicles (in some states at least) when importing from other member states. I would imagine there is no problem with importing furniture. I'm assuming it's for personal use. There may be different rules for importing for resale.
