German DSL, ISDN, phone and fax

How to hook it all up

Okay, so I have DSL and phone working just fine on the ISDN connection. Thing is, I want to hook up the printer/fax to the set-up as well. Can anyone point me to a user-friendly website that explains all of this? One with nice clear pictures would be best. cool.gif

Your isdn box should have an analog socket to plug the fax into, probably a TAE connector, and that should be it shouldnt it?

Unless its an ISDN fax in which case it plugs into one of the isdn connectors, probably a rj11.
Showem
Yeah? I wasn't sure if it was the wall or the ISDN box to use. And is it just me, or is violence necessary to fit them beside each other? I never seem to be able to get them to sit nicely side by side.
Kza
Nah dont use violence, theres 2 types of TAE connectors, similar but with different plastic tags preventing them from going into each other.

Maybe you need a double adaptor.
Showem
Aha, you've just thrown 2 details at me that I don't completely understand.

One, I'm assuming a TAE adapter is one of these:

But I don't know what especially an ISDN fax is and I don't have a clue what a rj11 is.
Kza
That pic looks like a rj11 to TAE adapter. Dunno where that would fit in, havent needed one before.

Rj11 is like a smaller ethernet plug, with 4 conductors instead of 6.

And I dont know what sort of fax you have. Dont the instructions tell you where to plug it in?
Grinner
Fisrtly, do you have a convertor, One that converts your ISDN back to analogue.. ?
If not, it is not possible to connect a fax to the line as all fax machines are Analogue devices only..

Okay, here's what I know:

It's an HP psc 2210 all in one. Copier, fax, printer, scanner.

It was given to my bf from his work to use from his home office. As it had previously been used, all it came with was the machine, a USP connector and a power cord. No instructions, no telephone cable.

As the last time I had to connect any of this it was on an analog line without ISDN or DSL and a simple phone/fax machine. Therefore, this is all undiscovered country for me.
Kza
Maybe her fax has a rj11 connector so it can be used in a PABX environment, and the adaptor is supplied for normal use in a normal TAE analog socket.

Id say the simples answer is find a cable that can connect between the fax machine and one of the TAE analog ports on the ISDN box.
Grinner
not likely
Showem
I looked at the back of the machine. There are two outlets that look the same. They look like this:

One has a picture of something that looks like the connector to the wall, another with a picture of the phone. I'm guessing this means they want me to hook the phone up via the HP machine. But I don't want to do that, as the whole point of having ISDN is so that I have separate numbers for separate tasks.
Grinner
The Fax has probably come from the States or Canada where they are supplied with an rj11-rj11 cable. This primarily is because the States, and canada use analogue technology..
from experience of working around the world, it would seem that is is primarily Germany, where ISDN is a prefered service.

Showem has not said she has a convertor, so its unlikely to work.
The Modems installed in Fax machimes are analogue only and not digital compatible.
Grinner
IF you have a Fax machine you need an AB convertor..
This can be programmed so that when a call comes in for the FAX machine, the AB convertor diverts the Converted cal to the FAX..
Showem
I don't think the machine is from North America Grinner, as all the buttons on the front are written in German. That would lead me to believe I should be able to use it with a German system.
Grinner
Fax machines are Analogue... ISDN is digital.

PM me a fone number I will call and explain
Kza
@showem So does my suggestion really not work? Or do you just not have the right cable?

The "big" end should go into the ISDN box and the little end in the back of the fax machine

Heh, sorry the pic is so crap, boss is sneaking around so I was rushed.

Showem
As I said Kza, I don't have that cable. I am just looking to figure it out before I buy the wrong things.
Grinner
Its good to talk. biggrin.gif
Showem
Okay, Grinner explained it all very nicely to me over the phone. I understand now, I hope. Thanks to the both of you for your advice!
