the german army is at this very moment cleaning the snow off of my roof! They have been in Deggendorf all day! God bless there rosy little cheeks! should I bring them coffee?

its pretty sad that a fireman died and there have been a ridiculously high number of others injured with this snow clearing (which was ostensibly done to potentially save lives). A cup of coffee is probably the least you can do - although maybe you'll just be getting in the way
is it a flat roof by the way? Surely they don't need to clear sloping roofs

snow removal from roofs is a dangerous job, needs to be done right! That's why we always sent my brother up there to do if for us.

they have been working so hard all day in my neighbourhood alone. We have about 110 cm of snow on our roofs. I am making a batch of tea right now

if you're going to give them kaffee or tee you should probably bring them kuchen as well. Its just about 4 pm which is usually nachmittags pause for Germans and that always means kafee and kuchen.

it is still snowing as well. I can't believe it! I haven't seen this much snow in years! It took us 2hours and 15 minutes to drive to the airport his morning, normally 45 minutes. If anyone wants to ski you can pretty much do it in my backyard!

erding is also looking pretty snowed under. the
S-Bahn was delightfully delayed this morning leaving all us muppets standing on the platform. doesn't appear to have stopped since. now back to huge fluffy flakes which pile up damn fast.

as far as i remember, it has stayed since then. maybe not in our garden but in the fields around erding, there has been constant snow cover since we moved here.
We've had at least a bit of snow in front of the house ever since.
the Isarauen too have not been completely clear since then.

I'm with Tom17.. there is no such thing as too much snow.. lets hope it keeps falling like this until the end of winter (at which point lets hope it turns very quickly to a nice hot and dry summer)..

I remember while I was growing up and hearing about Germany...I always imagined tons of snow.I was severely dissappointed when I got here..until this year! Now it´s slowly approaching what I always imagined. Needless to say where I come from - this is childs play. Can´t believe they have Notstand in some communities and schools shut down etc...This is winter - let it snow.

When I point out the snow, and then ask them... "Would you send your Hubby on a roof in this weather?" Most of them smile and say "Yeah!, Why not?"

Feb 10 2006, 7:17 pm
Yeh, I'm not sure if I believe it to be honest but I don't know how else you would simulate something like that.. the water might have actually been quite cold, but if it was -40 outside, then it would still be steaming..
The thing that makes me think it isn't real is that as soon as it left the pot it immediately turned to "snow". I would have expected it to get higher, separate and then freeze and fly away..

Could have been Lox or Nitrogen.. Much lower boiling point...

I think it is real. I also like the snow, but I wish that I wasn't sick right now so that I could go out and play in the snow with my son. There was a lot more snow last year, but this year it has been on the ground longer. Last year, I had to shovel the yard to make room for the dogs to go out.

a little synopsis of my last canadian winter
QUOTE
But nobody had it worse than St. John's! Newfoundland's capital city was directly in the path of almost every winter storm that crossed North America. From the first few flakes of snow on November 22, 2000 to the final flurries on May 26, a grand total of 648.4 cm accumulated, breaking a more than century-old record. It was likely the greatest snowfall for a city of comparable size anywhere in the world. With storms averaging one every four days, city crews ran out of places to stack it (no wonder considering that, if packed as a snowball, the total snowfall would measure two kilometres across). Over 500 million tonnes of snow fell on the city, enough to fill 3,200 SkyDomes. Reluctant to call in the army, the Mayor appealed to municipalities in Eastern Canada to send a squadron of snow blowers and ploughs to his snowbound city.

In the video, the steam is rising and not "boiling" over the mug, therefore it has to be warmer than the surrounding air. Also, if you pause the vid, you do see that the guy has ice on his face after tossing it in the air and if you look carefully enough, you can see larger particles falling out of the blowing ice crstals. I wouldn't say that it was -40 or below at that point because at that temp your face would begin to freeze fairly quickly. Then you have to add to that the fact that the race was delayed by the extreme weather.

there were only outside a short time, I spent most of my life with temps of -30 to -40 for about 6 weeks a year. And yah, after 10 minutes you are cold, but you don't freeze. Your lungs can freeze if you go running, so a scarf is usually suggested to cover your mouth and nose. In Canada you wake up every morning, and check the weather channel for the temp and windchill. In itself -30 is okay, but a wind chill of 2500 make exposed skin freeze in 3minutes.
Darkknight
Feb 10 2006, 9:12 pm
2500 Huh.. Remind me never to goto your parts of Canada
Eleanor Rigby
Feb 10 2006, 9:16 pm
Yeah -40C isn't as bad as it sounds, you have to be bundled up but it's not cold enough to make you stay inside. The temp in that video has to be a lot lower than that.
Lupo
Feb 10 2006, 11:10 pm
The video is totally legit! I know cause I´ve done the same thing myself! You take hot water and throw it up into the air. Fun trick. -40F is surviveable, just don´t have any exposed skin. Back in 1988 I remember an Artic cold front that came from Eleanor Rigby´s...with -80F wind chill. So damn cold, it killed a lot of pine trees...

Where'd all this talk about extreme temperatures come from on a thread about snow? It rarely snows when it's very cold, and it's currently above freezing point outside.

Feb 11 2006, 12:33 pm
it can't snow if it's very cold. snow only happens b/t specific temperatures (at least i think that's correct... idk DK will prob go google it and let us know if i'm right or not)

Snow, Temperatures, Winter... Everything you need to know is
HereQuick Answer: The truth is that it can never be too cold for snow, barring a drop in temperature all the way to absolute zero (-460ºF or -273ºC), in which case snow or lack thereof should be the least of your concerns. But even at balmier temperatures than absolute zero, below, say,
-20ºF (-29ºC), it can be too cold for a
lot of snow to fall.
