well, looks like that long-awaited dump (!) is coming, starting on monday and intensifying on tuesday. at the moment, that's as far out as i can see on snow-forecast (as i'm a tightwad and haven't paid for membership). so, when the skies clear, who's up for a day in the fresh stuff?
(i'm currently on an intensive german course at the goethe every day, so will need to persuaded to pull a sicky but i'm sure it won't take too much!)

I am.
I'm guessing Wednesday is our best bet at the moment - perhaps not perfectly clear skies that day, but a pause in the puking at least (got this idea from the wetter.com forecast in a few selected resorts, and yep, me be a tightwad too).
I like forecasts like this:
http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Soll.0to3top.shtmlIf all goes well we could have half a meter of fresh to play in by Wednesday, and it looks like even more is coming later in the week, so this coming weekend could be recockulous.
So my suggestion is to plan around Wednesday, and we'll keep checking the forecasts every 2 minutes like the true snow bitches we are and see what happens.

I would love to come but cant do the week thing.

@ET. sounds like a plan to me.
i trust snow-forecast the most in terms of longer range forecasting (ie beyond tomorrow). wetter.com and wetter.de tend to be a bit flaky in my experience but as you say, we'll be checking for updates several times a day, so no problems there!
just so you know, i'm not a full-blown powder junky yet. i've skied properly off-piste several times with friends who are very good and i enjoy it, but i'm still a bit of an intermediate in the deep stuff. so on most days, tend to wander down the side of pistes, not that i'm not up for it with those who know.

I can only speak for myself, but yes, I go off-piste a lot - it's where the fresh tracks are. There is something inherently different between fresh track powder and torn up powder - any junkie will know what I speak of.

Agreed. Wetter.com blows chunks anyways - it always gets stuck loading pages, and yeah, it's tipping scattered clouds Tuesday afternoon when you know the thick of the storm will be hanging around.

S'all good! We'll probably wind up being a Mötley Crüe anyways with all sorts of levels, it always works out.

Right then, time to have a nice Sunday afternoon jerk off to the snow forecast.

sweet! I have a 2 day meeting in Garmisch this Wed & Thurs, if you can believe it. God bless our German director. The last meeting he scheduled was the last week in September, in Munich.

All gloating aside, TCH may be taking advantage of the free hotel with me, and if so will definitely be looking for someone to ski with (intermediate-ish) during the day. His nights will be otherwise occupied.

Alright, so fine, barry won't be able to make it. Bastard. But we will be needing two cars. And a meetup point.
Wednesday looks a bit flurryly, but it won't be dumping I reckon. Still a good idea to stay a bit lower, so I think either the Wilder Kaiser area or Kitzbühel would be good choices. Frollick among the trees n shit. I've never been to any of them, so if anyone knows where to go tear it up there, speak up!
Or whadya all reckon?
And cars... I've got a sedan that can take 3 and gear. It *should* be available for driving on Wed, plus, it's a diesel, so low mileage costs. But whoever's got the Hummer or Suburban, speak. If not, then we need one more car.
And meetup point... Does anyone know a good place to meet where others can park their cars over the day for free? I'm guessing several of us, if not all, will be driving to the actual meeting point. FWIW, I'm at Stiglmaierplatz, so if two others are closeby (I know dubdub is) we can do a local meeting point for one car. And something else for the other car.
Or whadya all reckon?
And any other takers; Wednesday. Snow. Play. Interested? Post.
Fraggin' organizing, exhausting it is.

On that note, off to watch some fraggin' Battlestar Galactica.

We are also going on Friday as well.

hopefully it will howf down with snow until the weekend and then the sun will come out and i'll be first one on the piste when it happens. i am willing to get up twatting early and pick anyone up who can get their arse to an agreed pick up point on the east side of the city (and preferably near the a99/a8).

the forecast now looks like it continues on to friday night with it being even heavier still. really should get memembership to snow-forecast for longer range predicitions but saturday looks like it will be snowing less heavily (use the play function for eastern alps to see it sweep across from the west).
anyone out playing today, tomorrow or friday, please report in! my guess is, new snow but quite high winds, so time to play in the trees. hutcho, you're idea of skiwelt may be a good one if the wind persists as zillertal is a tad exposed.

I went skiing in Kitzbühel yesterday, and it wasn't that great unfortunately. Tough conditions out there - the approx. 25 cm of new snow was cement heavy (due to the warm spell), the fog was insanely thick pretty much all day, the slopes underneath the powder were icy and chopped up making the skiing very unpredictable and tough. Finally, and most importantly, avalanche danger was/is high due to the recent icy conditions all resorts have had and fresh snow falling on top of that providing no traction for it to stay put.
The wind wasn't bad at all yesterday (although it is a bit breezy today), and it will be even less of an issue this coming weekend looking at the snow forecasts - even the top at Hintertux at 3250 meters is reporting only 10 km/h winds throughout the weekend which is very little.
Nevertheless, this weekend should be great - fresh snow, great weather, low winds. But, for any powder hunters this weekend, please be careful. Conditions are far from optimum to be heading off piste.

If you have a car and want a big day's skiing, Skiwelt and resorts around that area (Kitzbühel) are pretty good..

Ok, so as discussed with a few people now, the plan for this Sunday is Skiwelt if anyone is interested in joining us. Skiwelt is a huge area, 33 euros for the day lift pass and is only a little over an hour away from Munich (if the traffic is ok). Sunday looks like being the best weather day of the weekend, even if the fresh powder might be a bit cut up from the day before.
We have been stuck in a traffic jam for over 3 hours coming home before though, and this is all down to leaving too late. So our plan on Sunday is to leave Munich about 7am so that we are down there by 8:30 and then we'll probably leave about 2pm before the traffic hots up.
Anyone else that is keen on coming down, post and let us all know. Unfortunately our car is full, and a car is the only easy way of getting down there but maybe there will be some space in other people's cars.

WTF? SnowForecast.com now predicts snow showers all day tomorrow and Sunday all over Tirol pretty much - no clear skies anymore. Oh well, as long as visibility is good...
A few others and I are heading to Hochfügen to go tear it up, and some of us plan to just find some cheap ass place to stay over night from Sat to Sun to ski both days. If anyone is feeling feisty and likes to make big turns in the powder, PM me and we'll sort you out.
Finally... The 6 day forecast is showing another storm pulling through starting Wednesday night - Sölden is for example showing a dump of 10 cm just for that night...

Of course, can't trust a forecast that far ahead, but it is indicative that another storm is on its way, and pretty soon as well. Stay tuned...
