Some of you guys might have known that i mainly do shopping in Bio shops such as Basic etc and it seems that since few days they have taken away all tetra drinks packaging (which i normally consume such as bio apple juice etc)

One of my friend questioned the sales asistance and was told that the colourings on the packaging seems to have dissolve into the content of the juice! mad.gif

I don't think they are using safe colour!! Do you guys see any scenario like this whereby tetra packs just disappear from shelves anywhere else??? ph34r.gif

Last month it was reported that Aldi and Lidl had 'issues' with their tetra paks.
Apparently a chemical (ITX) used to speed up the drying process after the cartons have been printed was desolving into the juices. Affected were cartons produced by Tetra Pak and Elopak.
However, Tetra Pak state on their website that they have stopped using this chemical as of 1st January 2006.
Not sure whether this is the case with your preferred juice though, but it's pointing you in the right direction.

Okay, this is kind of off-topic, but I suppose now the time has come for me to finally fess up to this, so here is the story...

When my parents came to help move me and my 2 cats to Munich a year ago at Christmastime, they enjoyed their very first Glühweins here at the many Christmas markets we visited here during their visit. They told me several times how much they liked it, and what fun memories it brought back. So I thought it would be fun to send them some Glühwein in the box with their Christmas gifts. I found some TetraPaks of Glühwein at the grocery store, which I thought would be fine, since I was just doing this more for the fun/nice memories reason, than for the culinary aspect of it. So I packed everything up, and mailed off the package (yes, it was late).

Fast forward a few weeks later... I come home from the gym on a Sunday afternoon... my husband tells me I am now his biggest hero ever (oh-so-very-sarcastically). While I was at the gym, he got a phone call from my Dad in California (about 5 am his time), asking if we knew what the "dark red liquid" leaking from one of the packages might be? Turns out, something happened to the package (no idea what, or how), and it started leaking Glühwein, and due to the leaking package, I was now responsible for shutting down the entire operation of the San Francisco post office for several hours, in the middle of the Christmas rush!!! I was absolutely, utterly mortified and embarrassed, but let me just tell you what a good laugh my husband and entire family got out of this!!! laugh.gif (It's taken a while, but I can finally laugh about this now)

Moral of the story: Do NOT ship TetraPaks of ANYTHING! (yes, I know I probably should have thought this was a bad idea from the start, but when you're in the middle of the Christmas rush, these logical thoughts just somehow slip one's mind... Although I'd like to think it is perhaps the fault of this faulty ITX chemical Saz mentioned, and not my utter stupidity that caused this disaster! wink.gif

Whats more dangerous - walk along Leopoldstrasse or have a Tetrapack-drink? Don't know? wink.gif

I think, if I would be interested in living "bio", I would never buy anything packed in a paper-wax-chemikal package...sorry
Andy101
Next time, i will juice those bio fruits instead of buying paks. wink.gif

@inka-hmm i thought it is forbidden to send food stuffs to the states. When i was back in Singapore last year i saw the new regulations of that and for this i could'nt send the xmas biscuits to one of my friend living in Hawaii.

Oh yes...Inka, i did send Glühweins back to Singapore (My mum) miss that too but LOL tongue.gif i send them the Gummi Gelatine version as bon bon which is quite hard to find!

Was it just juices or was it milk too? We used to get the milk in the blue tetrapak containers, I forget the name weinstephan or something?

Anyway, they changed to a new style tetrapak container with a larger opening to pour the milk out but we cannot drink it as to us, it smells like meat.

I hope that was the same problem as mentioned above. NO MORE MEAT MILK!!! biggrin.gif

As far as I know, Tetra-Paks have been around for yonks now. And as far as I know there isn't a single recorded incidence of a tetra-pak related maladie. Therefore I think it is safe to assume their and your concerns are groundless. Go on, have a tetra-pak, you might get hit by a bus tomorrow!

BTW, Bio and organic products are bollocks. I used to deliver agricultural chemicals to farmers and the organic boys were some of my best customers. You are being conned into paying high prices for products that farmers can't sell normally because they are undersized or of insufficient quality. Kind of like doubling the price of a cheap, crappy wine to get people to buy it

Tetra pak are actually quite a "green" company. They recycle the packaging into a sort of chipboard - their offices are full of stuff like trays, rulers, etc made from this weird multicoloured stuff; which is the tetra-chipboard stuff. Also make childrens playgrounds out of it.

@Danny Fishcharge-I buy Bio drinks from basic or some similar stores due to the fact that the price is reasonable as a non - Concentrate smile.gif I used to love the american (more expensive) Florida's...brand but later suspect that they might be using (GMO orange). The local Florida's brand is from belgium but it just does'nt taste the same that i usually purchase in USA or the one imported to Singapore.

I have tried different brands of juice in munich and most of the time when it is from concentrate i will have stomach upset.

@Don riina-hmm do you think they used colours derived from plants, flowers etc?
