its not actually the two ronnies, but either "the frost report" or "that was the week that was". google is your friend topsy.

It was the Frost Report, I can tell you that without googling smile.gif
I was just too lazy to type out the full names of the two Ronnies...

*goes off to find the "I'm so lazy" thread*

I counter your personal experience with mine. I work directly for the owner and managing director of my company, his father did so before him as well. He has had oodles of money and social standing throughout his life. You'd never know it by the way he dresses talks or acts, he goes out of his way not to live with the extravagences he can afford. If you met him you'd never know and he'd be what you refer to as high class.

its called having a character. a strong sense of who you are as a person. this is not there in alot of insecure middle class people so they are more inclined to use status symbols to bolster their weak egos.

That's my point. The upper class or old money couldn't give two flying fucks about being able to be distinguished or not. That's why you'll see the upper middle class in Armani suits and what not and the uppder class dressed like shit in their tweed coats.

@Surfer

Of course I'm generalising. Sociology is not an exact science.

class and money only matter to those who don't have any.

My New Years resolution is to refuse to speak to anyone without a double-barrel name.
Topsy
you are dead posh, though, JE
you even bother about stuff like how people butter their bread and stuff
I'm surprised you even talk to the likes of me, really... although I could quite conceivably get married and get myself a double-barrelled name

i refuse to speak to anyone without a double-barrel shotgun.

ha! ER so true..

Disagree. Go to Lenbach on Wednesday night or Prinzregentenstrasse any time of the week. Showing you have money matters a lot to a lot. Besides, wh< do you think marketing exists and brand management? Who do you think buys Porsches?

It would be better if you didn't. Just listen and do as they say.

of course u disagree, but the point remains that people with money doesnt generally talk about it, or worry about their class or feeling depressed about it as certain members repeatedly stated.. maybe people flash their feathers a bit but i garantee a topic like this wouldnt be brought up.. why? cuz they dont give a shit about how the lower classes feel inferior

is it possible to get nostalgic about "fuck-me-slingbacks" i wonder?

Yes.
You get a special carton and small dust bag to keep them in.
In my dotage, I can take them out and be reminded of past glories. Keepsakes don't have to be old photos and concert tickets you know.

that Porsche Cayenne says it all. Several people have already made the distinction between "being in a social / economic class" and "having class". If you have to show how well off you are, then you may be in the upper economic classes, but you don't have class.

I thought Posh and Becks were the current definition of nouveau riche, and that people make fun of them for showing off all the money they have now. No matter where they came from originally, I've no idea, the amount of showing off they do is just tasteless. I believe that functions similarly in all other countries too. Part of the fun of watching MTV's Cribs -- can you believe those people have so much money that they don't have anything better to do with it than buy a diamond-encrusted television! How shallow!

But what should people with class and money drive then? Maybe they just like it? Are all 4*4s (except beaten up landrovers) ostentatious? I do agree that mums having them purely for the school run is very OTT though and that is all about show.

Wasn't Posh born in the same hospital as a prominent TTMer? ph34r.gif

And no, it isn't me.
And the person in question isn't Nouveau.

I did grant exceptions, you know.

I´ve lived on both sides of the pond and I can verify from my own experience that here in Germany, it is easier to be negatively categorized. You know, the late Peter Ustinov wrote a book about not making assumptions about people - something that many Germans should take to heart.

the Germans might be bad, Lupo, but they're nowhere near as bad as the Brits IME

I purchased my car from Auto-Konig in Anzing. I must be the poorest (financially speaking) customer they have (They are official dealers for Lambo, Rolls, Bentley, Maserati, Ferrari etc). I originally went in there with 3 days beard growth, old jeans and a rugby shirt on and no-one batted an eyelid. I have found the staff in their to be excellent and I have found the customers to be geniunely nice people, chatty, fun and above all-polite. They seem to be both nouvea riche and old money but none seem to have any hang-ups about status etc.(But they were all, and I mean all inquisitive about my rugby shirt?!)

I know someone (German)that is a self-made millionaire but likes to ram his presidential status and social status down everyones throat. Despite his wealth he seems to be socially under confident and makes sneering comments about those he perceives to be of a higher status than himself.

I believe that the people that are born into a higher social status dont really care too much having the trinkets to prove it, they just "get on with it", the same as the lower classes. The middle-classes, whether very wealthy or not have real hang-ups about cars, accents, titles and education.

Me? I could not care less, class is something you have or dont (and it doesnt matter into what you were born or what material possessions you have)imo

this thread is utter madness. do you want to know what class people are so you can look down or up to them??? what is the point of working this out. i;ve never understood why people actually sit and work it out or waste any time thinking about it. i am lord of the manor however, thee are my subjects. scotland rules the waves.

actually going back to the german end two great words; shiki-miki and spieser. great I love them. If u really want to get into socio economic generilizations check out the german fraturnities. verbindung i think is what they are called. much history is there. I actually watched a father show his two kids there ansetoral line on the wall displaying altherr. The things range in political orientation (as well as social) to financial. you have to want to get in and be let into these things remeber. and the whole thing is done contractually. and if you want to see something really odd watch them practice there sword fighting (not all frats fence, infact it is getting more and more uncommen. however they are called schlag verbindungs and when they actually fight they where protection everywhere except the face where they wear specail goggles that are strapped around the head giving your ears some protection. the object being only to hit your fellow frat friend in the head. yes the sword is sharp.)
