Holiday / vacation allowance legalities

How many days off are allowed by law

Hi there. Can anyone tell me what the law is regarding vacation/holiday days? What must a company give? I heard it is a minimum of 24 days. If that is the case, why do most companies (those most of my buddies work at) give closer to 30? What is the deal here? Give me all the details.

Thanks very much for any help.

cos they are nice.

or maybe the Tariffvertrag covering their industry disctates a minimum of 30. or perhaps the Betriebsvereinbarung does. could be any number of reasons.

Ok...found this piece of info on the site 123Recht, which is a good place to go if you have individual/specific questions. You pay a small fee (€10-15) and get your questions answered by a lawyer with knowledge in that area. One piece said:

2. Sollte vertraglich nichts anderes geregelt sein, dann haben Sie pro Monat einen Anspruch auf zwei Urlaubstage.

If your contract doesn't say anything else, you are entitled to 2 vacation days per month. (rough translation)

That means 12x2 = 24, so 24 days are legally required. However, many people have 30 days of vacation in their contracts. I don't know why. I even know someone who has 33 days.

Most companies seem to reward long service with extra days holiday.
The legal requirement is 4 weeks, which used to mean 24 days cos in the 60's they worked a 6 day week.
This link, in German, gives you the lowdown. Arbeitsrecht
