Well with all of the cute doggie pictures (excluding those in cars), I would appreciate anybody that has experience buying a pure bred in Germany if you could share that info with me -- PM or on-board. Also interested in training, laws, vets...

I am specifically thinking about a Black or Chocolate Lab.

thanks!

I'd be interested in any findings you make webmaster6. One of the biggest carrots my other half dangled in front of me to get me over here was the fact that we had a dog here, but it sadly died. Would adore to get another one (Perhaps two. Same amount of work IMHO) but we both work, so its not really an option. Very much doubt my boss would let me bring 2 hounds into the office sad.gif

Anyway be interested all the same. You never know, I could get fired!
Showem
I always thought someone could make a killing with a Rent-A-Dog idea. Take it for a few hours, play with it, let it drool on you, sleep on the couch, then bring it back when you have to go to work.

Nice idea showem. I have thought about volunteering at a dogs home somewhere - bit of walking, cleaning, feeding, whatever really. I just don't trust myself (or my woman as it goes) not to just take a few home. unsure.gif

dogs fine idea in principle.
mans best friend and all that.

if you do end up getting one sorted one way or the other, could i urge you to break the mould over here and pick the dog shit up afterwards.

good luck.

I've been dog sitting for a couple of months now and have grown quite attached to the thing, even though he nearly throttled to death a little handbag sized thing that went for him this morning.

You have to register dogs here and vets are quite expensive, he went yesterday as he has regular checks for doggy epilepsy and the bill was 100 Euros, ouch!

Cheers webmaster. Man, I remember that topic with the picture of Barbiejane's gorgeous hound. Used to have to walk past a petshop in Barcelona every day, and they always had pups like that. Heart wrenching.

I've wanted to get a dog for a long time but am concerned about what to do with it when I travel... I go back to the US basically twice a year, for about 3 weeks each time.

What do the other dog owners around here do when they travel for extended periods of time? How do the dogs take it flying back and forth?

I wish this was my dog:

I am interested in buying getting a Pug (I think it is Mop in German)- can anyone provide help? The websites for most of the bredders I come across are all in German.

Thanks.

Also- what do you think the typical price would be?
sarabyrd
OBD: Mops is the word. The Süddeutsche has animal-related classified ads every Saturday ("Tiermarkt"), generally just about every breed of dog is offered there. Or try Kurz und Fündig.
ODB0089
sarabyrd: I do not mean to sound like an idiot- but what is the Süddeutsche or Kur and Fünding.
sarabyrd
Süddeutsche Zeitung is the "serious" newspaper in Munich, Kurz und Fündig is classified ads only and appears Fridays and Mondays (I think). I didn't know that you haven't been here very long, sorry on my side ohmy.gif

If you want to go through a breeder:

1) They will ask you if one of you is at home all the time, or they tend not to give you the dog...

2) We have a Bichon Frise, and love her to bits ! But did not know how stubborn the breed is...so its really a good idea to check website about the pros and cons of the animail.

3) Make sure the animal meets your activity level...Bichons are great this way...they can live with the activity (jogging) and they can live with out it...

4) Training book. There is a really good general overall training book from the RSCPA ...try and find it for you. This really helps!

5) Crate train you dog...(did not do this with the first 3 dogs- poodles) what a difference! she runs in her house for her treat! Its a happy place. Only way to travel...dog is not bouncing around the car.

Puppies are really great, but LOTS of work...just be prepared for a years worth of investment, although it is SOOO worth it!

PS. I would not go to a Zeitung! We bought a puppy like this and PAID for it big time! Had been mistreated...have to be really careful!

Well, I have a pug now back in the US- my parents are taking care of her. The problem is, I miss her tons and have to get one for the 9 more months I will be in Munich. I am unable to get in touch with an english speaking breeder of such dogs- I guess I will check Zeitung, although if anyone has anoy other suggestions I would love to her them.

Thanks
kitkat64
Why don't you send her over here? I have two friends who have brought their dogs over here without much of a problem. Plus other people have posted her all about how to do it (bring your dog).
knusper_muesli
Are you going to dump her after the 9 months?!?! unsure.gif
ODB0089
I can't bring her here- my parents love her.

And I would definitely bring the new pug back to the US with me.
bobbyboy
We bought our dog "George" from

http://www.retriever.de/

He has been an absolute pleasure, he understands German, Bayerische, English, Slovak & Czech..
ODB0089
Thanks Bobbyboy- I am looking for a Mop- so if anyone has any experience, it would be helpful to hear about it.

i brought my dog w/ me from the US- Brennan is sleeping next to me at the moment. he's a collie/shepherd mix.
he's great and it's fun! onlyproblem is i want to travel and i'm not quite sure what to do with him... there are 'doghostels' (kennels), but from what i can tell they are quite expensive!
any advice?
knusper_muesli
Yes. Buy a crate, train him to go in it, lock it up with a two week supply of food and go go go! Alternatively, get a better job so that you can afford to put him in a kennel. Your call. ph34r.gif

Obviously I'm being sarcastic. That's the thing about having a dog. It's sort of like having a kid. You can't just run off somewhere for the weekend, you have to plan ahead.

Some companies I know about:

@ bobbyboy

How did you get http://www.retriever.de/ to sell you a dog.
I gave them a ring and they said they do not sell dogs. I was
actually still am interested in a Labrador or Golden Retriever puppy.

Any Ideas???
