TT webserver downtime - from 6pm Friday 3.Feb.2006

At about 6pm this Friday - 3.Feb.2006 - TT will be switched to read-only mode. This means that forum posting, personal messaging, restaurant & bar reviews, and wiki edits will be disabled. The website will then be moved to a new piece of hardware. Hopefully full service will be resumed by about mid-day on the following Saturday. After the upgrade there will inevitably be teething problems. Various pages will be temporarily broken. These will be fixed one-by-one as the errors are found. If you notice something still broken by, say, Sunday, post it here.



For the tech-heads who might be interested, here are the hardware details...

Current webserver:

• Pentium 4, 2.6 GHz
• 1,024 MB RAM
• 80 GB diskspace

Forthcoming webserver:

• AMD Opteron 175 (Dual-Core)
• 4,096 MB RAM
• 500 GB diskspace

4 GB of memory should be enough for anyone.

If you're out tonight keep an eye out for all the slightly dazed and confused pale-skinned folk who will be wandering around seeing the outdoors for the first time.

Approach them and you will recognise them as TT'ers by their tendancy to jitter their fingers before responding to you, or even more of a giveaway, they will say LOL out loud and/or hold up small cardboard smiley faces to express their terror.
