A crawl around the bars in Isarvorstadt, Munich

Keydeck
Saturday night turned into a bit of a mission, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Started at 8pm in "Zoozie'z". Had a couple of beers & a pizza with Paul & Paul. This is a nice bar, but I have to say, I hate the beer. It's Ayinger and I simply don't like it.

Passed by a bar called "The Big Horn". A quick glance in the window at a studded, leather-clad member of the Village People told us it wouldn't be out cup of tea. Although the name had already done that. Moved on from there and stopped into a bar called "Seitensprung" on Holzstrasse. Nothing special here. The little rainbow sticker on the door told it's tale, so we had one Spaten and moved onwards.

Next stop was "Padres" on Blumenstrasse. The place was heaving (which doesn't take much). Got a little plot about half way down the bar. I like this place because no matter what happens, you're certainly not going to be able to just sit at a table in isolation from everyone else. The area around the bar is so tight, you'll certainly get to meet people. Only thing I don't like is that they don't serve Helles, only Pils. I've no objection to Pils per se, it's the small glasses which annoy me.

Wandering along Sendlingerstr we came across a place which was having it's opening night. "Bar Capalbio" is run by a fairly young Italian bloke and most of the people there seemed to be of that persuasion also. At ground level most of the space is taken up by the bar, and then downstairs are a couple more sections. Have to wait and see if this place takes off or not.

Next stop was "Harpers & Queens" further along Sendlingerstr. This is where Paul-II, introduced a slightly more schicky-micky tone into the evenings proceedings. Beautiful people, good background music, etc, etc. It's a nice enough place, more suited to cocktails than what we were doing. So we settled for a couple of bottles of Heineken.

Over the road and on a side-street we found Doro's. Now this was more like it. It'd be kinda like the Kilian's of Greece. Nicely laid out bar with lots of gorgeous girls around. And they're much more friendly and approachable than in most places. No idea what beer was on the cards as we switched to vodka redbulls for a break. Worth a visit.

Then round the corner to Hiscox on Oberangerstr, another suggestion from Paul-II who was looking exceeding worse for wear at this stage. Had me a rather large rum and coke. Nice place, but the service was brutally slow. I like it for the big comfy armchairs.

Anyway, it'd be nice to think that after all that we did the sensible thing and headed home to sleep. So just maybe that's what did happen...

Can I get a 30% commission if I can find you a new liver Keydeck?

Did you check out the toilets? I'm sure you did on a few occasions but could you see if they were clean? It's on my list of must be's before I'll go to a place. Us girlies can't exactly use the nearest "wally close".

Granny,

Sorry, but you are showing either your age or your general fastidious nature. Any girl worth her pints should be able to be go in available space given, tidiness and cleanliness nonewithstanding. Of course, a nice clean porcelain rim is preferred, but any bush-broken and curb-broken girl should be able to piss between two parked cars or squatting up and aiming at a none too sanitary basin.

hey key, how much do you usually allot for your pub crawls? do you also find it discerning that most places demand reservations or do you consciously avoid those joints?
was in towntown last weekend and two of the many places i tried to visit wanted a reservation. even at the bar. pretty stupid actually. where is the spontanaity here? damn i miss the u.s.

Elf, the only place I've ever had a problem due to not having reservations has been "Eat the Rich" on a Saturday night. They've been turning me away on Saturdays for years now. Been many other times but Saturday always seems to be a problem. Anywhere else that I've gone I've never had any issue with it. Actually, there was one time the bouncer at Lardy's asked me if I had reservations. I told him not to be silly that I'd been going there for years and have never reserved. He let me in and that was actually only my second visit smile.gif Having said that, perhaps I am not going to as many Schicky-Micky bars as some people, so it doesn't become an issue. Not that I purposely avoid them, just a little set in my ways of late. That's partially what Saturday night was about, I wanted to see a minimum of 3 bars which I hadn't been to before. As for how much I'd usually alot for a crawl, I assume you mean money, and after the first few of bars things generally get out of hand anyway and there'll be a few trips back to the cash machine before the night is done.

Granny, I always check the toilets, but in general I can only comment on the gents. Actually, after about pint number 3 it's pretty much one pee per pint. Once the flood gates have been opened, there's no going back. I agree that the state of the toilets is very important and usually reflects on the general cleanliness & hygiene you can expect in the rest of the place.

So toilet roundup, Zoozie's is relatively small but clean enough. Just remember that the door on the way in is a sliding door so don't try pushing and pulling it or you'll look like an idiot like I did. Seitensprung was standard kneipe toilets, nothing worth commenting on. Padres toilets are down the very back of the pub and can be a fight to get to them on a busy night. Rather pleasant smelling bathrooms if I remember correctly. Capalbio had the bathrooms downstairs and I remember nothing else about it. Harpers & Queens was the one place I didn't go bathroom. Doro's was another downstairs toilets, clean enough, but nasty lingering odour. Hiscox was fine, nothing special but clean. I say "nothing special", but in truth I don't want anything special from a toilet except for a bit of cleanliness. None of the places we visited on the night were bad enough to make me want to complain.
Granny
Showem,
What has age to do with ones preference of a clean toilet?
Having lived and worked in a few third world countries, I've plenty of experience in finding a suitable or not so suitable -but necessary- convenience. Anyway, I doubt even the most svelte figure could plank themselves between parked cars in Munich.
However, since most men suffer from post micturition dribble following a few pints, an inside toilet is preferable to prevent a steam trail in the snow.
Keep up the weekend exploritory escapades as I enjoy reading the pub crawl lists. I can take note and send my young visitors on a good night out with minimum effort ( keydeck usually has that pleasure).
Cheers

Granny,

Age might have to do with one's dislike or inability to hover in a crouching position over a toilet bowl due to stiff joints. I know this is the case for some older folks I know who replaced their toilet with one considerably higher than the previous one so they wouldn't have bend down so low. They call it (and I'm not making this up) their "handicrap" toilet.

But before you get the wrong idea, I do take note of the toilets in any place I might eat, as its usually reflective of the kitchen conditions. (Don Riina may have another comment about this, I don't know). But I don't tend to worry about it in drink-only establishments, unless it's in a right state.
Granny
You're up late tonight Showem.
I will admit to a little arthrosis of the left hip but it doesn't really affect my ability to hover.
