Travelling back from the airport by S8 on Saturday, I noticed lots of little look-out towers on stilts along the treeline. What are they: bird-watching hides; some kind of low-budget, misplaced Siegfried Line?
I've seen them before in other places too, but not in the same numbers.
No one I asked at my office knows about them and this is starting to to annoy me now! Thanks.

They're blinds for airplane watchers. Otherwise the airplanes would see them and shy away.

Grinner's right, they are for hunters to sit and wait for the deer and such to show up so they can shoot them. If you were sitting in one of those and managed to bring down a 767, I would be very impressed. They aren't just along the S8 line, take a walk in any forest around Munich and you will see dozens of them.

we I haven't seen them personaly but we have some similar towers in portugal and the use of it is to watch out for forest fires, in the summer there is alway a guy inside to spot a fire (in case one happens) don't know if it's the same here.
In the US if they're fire watching towers they tend to be higher than the trees around them, and rather sparsely positioned. These deer blinds are not that high, just a few meters.

Hehe, is a wooden tower to sit in looking out for forest fires surrounded by trees such a good idea?

Goooooooood question. I laughed out loud at the obviousness of it, but brilliant.
