So I head over to the American Consulate this morning. Thanks to TT, I know exactly what I need to do to add pages to my passport. I'm a good scout and have done as directed: go early, bring a book, and caffeine for good measure. I walk over there, only to find a nice xerox copy sign saying its closed today and tomorrow. Seriously, what is up with that? What if some shit breaks out and we's need asylum? Hasn't anyone else seen that Kevin Bacon movie besides me?

Anyhoo, to add insult to injury I decide to take a nice shortcut through the Englischer Garten. Thanks to my poncy boots I slip on the ice and bust my ass. Now I have a bruise forming the size of, well, my ass, which is considerable since it does have its own postal code.

Yes I should have called first but I didn't so now I'm posting it in case anyone else was headed that way.

Did they happen to mention why it's closed? Is there something we should know? unsure.gif

No. They just had a shiny green paper saying the consulate would be closed. At first I was confused because it said next week but it had today's date on it. Anyhoo, the guards just kind of smiled at me. Okay they were probably laughing at my misery, but they didn't open the door so no further information was exchanged.

From the American Consulate website link above:

QUOTE
Closed on American and German holidays
as well as every last Wednesday of a month.
In January 2006 we are closed on January 16, 25 and 26.
In Feburary 2006 we are closed on February 20 and 22.
In March 2006 we are closed on March 29.

The last Wednesday of every month thing seems to apply to many consulates.

Every time I call I just get this recorded message and never reach anyone I want, so I don't bother. I, too, have turned up on Labor Day Monday only to see my hopes dashed and my youthful enthusiasm at being there at 8am quenched. But I work around the corner so I had a nice breakfast at my desk and went to the Consulate the next day.

Keydeck, any idea why they are closed on Australia Day?

Just happened to notice that the US Consulate will be closed today and Wednesday. Today is "President's Day", and Wednesday is George Washington's birthday.

Schools are generally closed for President's Day (which is always on a Monday), but Washington's birthday is not a holiday for anyone I know of besides some federal offices.

Look for long lines on Tuesday and Thursday.
