I'll definitely be coming, might be bringing a friend (she's German - doubt she'll read the book but she needs to work on her English and I thought it might be good for her to sit in - let me know if there are any objections?). Also, I bought the book today and think I'll finish it in good time if anyone wants to borrow it after me - I need to finish Dracula first, but if I remember rightly S-5 is a pretty quick read. Might be cutting it a bit fine, but just let me know if anyone wants.

I'm sure she's nice but --

she needs to work on her English
I'm actually not in favor of having people practice their English on me. There's a whole section of classified ads on TT for people looking for language exchange partners...

We've had non-native speakers come before who just couldn't keep up. If she can keep up that's great, but the way you put it, it sounds like maybe no.

And really, it would be good for people who're coming to the book club to have made a good faith effort to read the book...

Well, she's doing a language exchange with me actually. I thought she could just sit and listen - she won't have read the book so she couldn't join in anyway, I just thought it might benefit her to hear some English conversation.
Gen
How about bringing her to TTTuesday tomorrow night? Or the 20somethings meetups on Thursdays? Lots of things going on that aren't organized around discussion of a book we've all read... where she'd be able to participate more.

Hi fizzygood, I'm glad that you're able to make it again. I'm adding your name to the signup list.

Regarding your friend, I think Gen is right that if she isn't going to read the book or be able to keep up with the conversation, then she shouldn't join us. If she hasn't read the book, I suspect she wouldn't get much out of our conversation, anyway. That's really nice of you to want to help her, though.

In addition to the other Toytown events that Gen mentioned, if you want to get a group together to practice English conversation with her, I'm sure that we could get a couple of people together (particularly if she's willing to spend a little time speaking German with us!). I would certainly be willing to help.

Can't make it tomorrow night, but you might be right - there might be a more appropriate group. It's just I wasn't actually planning on going to anything else! Never mind.
fizzygood
Sorry Pleiades, missed your post - thanks, that's a great idea! I'll see if she's up for it.
Gen
There are already meetups explicitly for language exchange as well. Really, there are tons of options out there.

Thanks Gen - really, all I was thinking was "I'm going to this anyway, maybe she could come along and listen in," but it's no big deal. I'll check out those other meet-ups too though, thanks!
Gen
Well you get her practiced up good and when she reads the book, she can come along.

In follow-up to our previous discussions, let's go ahead and set our November meetup for Tuesday, November 17, at 8:00 p.m., when we will be discussing The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. We'll pick the venue and start the signup list closer to that date.

If you click on the link in the paragraph above, it will take you to an English-language copy on amazon.de. Also, Gen previously posted information on the copies available through the Munich library system.

We also discussed skipping December and then meeting again in January. Therefore, I suggest that we pick a longer book to discuss in January, since we'll have an extended period of time to read it.

Hi Guys, I would love to come along and join you. What time do you usually finish??
I have to get home for about 11pm for the babysitter and I live 35km away from the center!
