or cheap internet cafes?

Hi everyone,

In four short days I'll be living in Munich biggrin.gif Unfortunately, the phone situation in our new apartment is really stupid...it costs .30 cents per minute to telephone or use the internet.

Does anyone know if there is free internet access available anywhere in Munich? Or as an alternative inexpensive internet cafes?

I found this thread,

Cheap internet access in Munich?

but was wondering if anyone had any more up-to-date information?

Does it cost money at the libraries? If so, how much? Do you have to be a member? Can you print pages as well?

What about the internet cafes? How much do they cost? Can you print pages? Where are they located, or what are their names?

Thanks for any information you have,
Chanda

There are at least two that I know of in Munich that haven't been discussed on that link.
Easy Internet Cafe is located on the Eastern side of the Hauptbahnhof. You can spot it by the annoyingly orange signs. Wide variety of people in there. Many travellers. You go in and pay in a machine to get a code that you enter in the computer to get online. Price is about 2 euros an hour I believe. (might be 2.50 or something). There are about 30 computers upstairs and 100 downstairs. Coffee shop upstairs has a friendly staff, and the bathroom will cost 50cents. These computers reboot automatically when you log out so be careful of saving work or leaving your station to get more time. Plus with the sheer amount of people coming in and out you want to watch your valuables.

Cafe Fellows (recommended) is on Leopold Strasse at the MunchenerFreiheit U3/6 stop. It is on the Eastern side of the street and just a block or so south of the Ubahn. Mostly students and young germans in this place. Much warmer atmosphere but only 10 or so laptops to use. Again, the cost is around 2 euros an hour or 7 for use all day. Friendly staff will get you coffee as well. Free bathroom downstairs. Printing is only 10cents a page (I believe) and on the honor system.

With these places you have to be able to put up with cigarette smoke when someone plops down next to you and you have already paid for your hour or two at your station. You also have to search for the '@' sign if you aren't used to the german keyboard.

A google on 'Munich Internet Cafe' gave this site:
Tourism Internet Cafes in Munich
Funny, the two I know of aren't mentioned and they also mention a 'free' one.

Lastly: I don't know how WiFi Hotspots work, but there are several hotspots in town.

WOW! Thanks so much, profundo, for all of the 'inside' information! When we arrive Thursday we have two priorities: 1)find a parking spot 2)find a good internet connection laugh.gif

Thanks for the information!

Does anyone have any experience with using the internet at the libraries?

The easyInternetCafe is pretty good, except you can only really use the web, no instant messenging clients which is a pain.

The cost varies depending on the time of day, I've seen the prices range from 1.80 EUR to 2.50 EUR per hour. Alternatively you can get special passes which are flat rate may help you save some cash.

Has anyone tried to use W Lan without being an AOL subscriber?

How do they bill you?

I used to go to the university libraries with my laptop, but nowadays you HAVE to be a student to be able to access the internet. I looked for other libraries with internet connection, but without any luck.

Coffee fellows in Leopoldstrasse is highly recommendable. It is 2.50€ per hour but the service is alright. You pay and you get a code. You can log off and on anytime so there is no time loss if you paid for 30 min and leave after 20. You just go in next time and use the other ten minutes. You also get long term tickets, if you know you'll spend a lot of time there. It is just opposite to Wirtshaus zur Brezn.
There is a Coffee Fellows in Tal as well but I don't know if they have internet there.
sparty
The one at Tal doesn't have internet connections.

Thanks, everyone!

I think I'm going to try the free option with the WiFi setup first. Back-up plan is Coffee Fellowes smile.gif

we use Q-DSL for our broadband connection; cheaper and faster than D-Telekom.

hello.

sorry if i repeat anything but just a few days back i saw this website posting WLAN hotspots in Munich. I will look for the site and try to post it here, but I remember that there are at least 30 places where u can now access the web FOR FREE with your own notebook and a wlan card.

(e.g. SFCC or Tambosi)

How cool is that? smile.gif
