Hi,
I'm moving to Munich on Thursday. We've been told by the landlord that we cannot
get an Anwohnerausweis for parking. We checked with a couple of garages in the area (Tuerkenstrasse/Schellingstrasse/University area) and the cheapest was 109 Euro/month.
Does anyone know of a free parking area in or around Munich that we could park and then use the public transportaion daily instead of our car?
It needs to be safe and free or really cheap (less than 25 Euro a month).
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Parking on the street is about your only option if you want free or cheap. It's reasonably safe, but if you are looking at using your car every day, it will be a pain to find parking every evening. I wouldn't worry about crime in this neighbourhood, as there are always people out on the streets, so someone breaking into your car would quickly be noticed. Can't guarantee scratch-free bumpers though.

Thanks showem.
I should have been more specific though:
On our street, as well as the surrounding streets, there are all kinds of signs that say you are not allowed to park for more than 1-2 hours. How do I park the car on the street without having to move it every hour or two? (As that is not an option.)
That's why I thought perhaps there was some kind of 'outside' (outside of the city) parking or something. (We drove around for 35 mins up and down each street/block surrounding our apt, about 8-10 blocks in each direction, and each street either said you needed an anwohnerausweis or that parking was restricted to 1-2 hours at a time.)
Where do I find these streets that you are allowed to park on for the whole day/night? Or do you all just park on the streets with the 1-2 hour limits and risk it?
Thanks.

Hey Chanda,
I live on Barerstr/Schellingstr. in
Schwabing. The parking right on the main roads is always limited and reduced or they have those ParkSchein meters where you have to pay and place the ticket in your window.
However, there are several blocks of parking behind the house where it is first come-first serve. I don't have a car but sometimes relatives will visit and rent one. With the hours of a tourist and not a 'nine-to-five'r we have never had a problem with it.
Suggestion from me would be to get here without committing to a garage. Check it out and see if it really is a trouble to do it every day, depending on your hours of operation and exact location. Then scout out potential garages if need be.
My landlord sometimes takes 20 minutes at night to drive around looking for a spot. Yeah, nighttime is hard to find parking.

You could try park and ride:
http://www.bayerninfo.de/verkehr/pr_muc.htmDunno about leaving cars there long term, could be dodgy.
Also be warned, anyone doing building work only has to place a notice on the footpath 3 days in advance. Any cars that are parked there after these 3 days are towed. That means you should check every couple of days where your car is parked to see if they are new signs. Have been burned on this one. Also heading off for a 2 week holiday is probably a bad idea.
I also used to live in the area, all the back streets west of where you are have free parking. Look for Josephsplats / Altfriedhof. Also a tip, I never failed to find parking on Infanteriestr. It is largely offices, so is free in the evenings. Probably a little far from you though.

Just a suggestion (not having a car myself) but maybe you will be lucky and see an advert, either in the local paper, or on one of those flyers with telephone numbers you rip off, advertising parkplaces in garages belonging to someone's flat. There's plenty near us but I don't live in the centre, and it happns when someone rents a flat with a parkplatz attached but they don't have a car so try and make some money on the side by renting this out.
Can't think of anything more concrete though.

UrbanAngel, it's a good idea, but anyone who knows what parking is like in Maxvorstadt will be charging waaaay more than Chanda's ideal of 25 Euros. I'd say 75 and up would be expected.

Thanks for all of your replies!
Yup, we saw quite a few of those tear-off flyers, and showem is right--they were all like 75+ euros for the area. All of the garages were 100+/month.
Thanks to all of your advice I think our best bet is to "go west".
Thanks for all of your suggestions, I really appreciate the help.
*note: I have spent the entire day reading the tips in the "Life in Munich" board (all 10 pages!!). Thanks so much to all of you who have posted your tips/tricks/etc. I look forward to implementing them come Thursday

chanda,
i know it is a bit away from your new place, but i live at stiglmaier platz and i know that in our complex, and most of the newer ones in the area there are many, many unused tiefgarage places...
we have ours rented out to a guy for €60 a month... that is the going rate around there...
my suggestion would be to look for any neu-bau buildings in the area and ask the hausmeiter people to stick up a notice...

Yesterday, while walking along Theresienstr., I didn't see any time limit signs for parking except for directly in front of the Neue Pinakothek. Maybe take a second look in the neighbourhood. And when you get into town, drop me a PM, as we are neighbours! Maybe I'll bake you cake or something.

why can't you have an Anwohner Park Lizenz?
I live in the Centre and got a Park Lizenz Altstadtring for 102€ a year.
You have to have your main residence in Munich (they don't really care if you are registered abroad as well). You need to go to Implerstrasse 9 (part of the kreisverwaltungsreferat at Poccistrasse) for the Verkehrsüberwachung and apply for it. You need the copy of the registration of your "Hauptwohnsitz" and your car papers.
In
Schwabing it only is about 30€ I was told.

@ bubblylady--
Wow! Thanks for the tip! This would be the easiest approach!
We were told by the landlord that it wouldn't be issued to us because the apartment house has it's own parking (but we didn't have that option becuase they are all rented out to other people that live in the house!??)

hmm I dont know about that... If I were you i would go for the stupid foreigner and just try

Usually, which is law in germany in modern times, it is the law that every flat has parking space provided. Which means it is not right that you have no parking in front of your house.
check out this
link. it is in German but it only says that you have to have your main residence in the area...
couldn't find the one in english... sorry

Thanks bubblylady! I'm checking out the link right now.
It's ok, no need for the English link, I can read German

I will definitely go there tomorrow and see what happens! *fingers crossed*

Update--
I just wanted to mention that we went and asked about the parking permit, but apparently for the area of Schwabing we live in they do not offer one (yet). The lady said to keep checking back b/c they will offer one for our area, but they don't know when that will be. She said that for
Schwabing they currently only offer two licenses for two particular areas.
We moved in last Thursday. We hit
Ikea after unpacking to get a few needed furnishings. When we got back, it was 8:30. We drove around until 9:50 pm looking for a parking spot-- anywhere and everywhere. We finally lucked-out and found one...and our car stayed there the entire week
Thanks for all of your suggestions and tips!!
