I think the level of immaturity amongst graduate students (particularly the male population of grad students) stems from the fact that they are 30 fucking years old and still live with their mothers- who do everything from making their breakfast to ironing their undies for them.

Yep
Renia
Yeah, we have that to look forward to Hams!

You must be kidding - my son is going to be the independent gentleman. I hope so anyways... or tbh I'm just really lazy.

I don't iron anything. My kid will learn to buy "wrinkle-free" clothing.

Why do Germans live at home for so long? What is this staring thing all about? The women act manly, the men are like little boys. What gives around here???

I like to stare.

the men are like little boys

Isn't that just a man thing? Regardless.

i agree, being unaware of how offensive a word is to someone else does not justify using that word. I also think that "Neger" is outdated and reeks of racism.

However, I also understand that many Germans are simply unware of the connotations of the word (like i said above, this does not justify its use) and it might take a while and some education to politely point this out.

Yah, I was flat out shocked when I came back from my ski vacation very tan (I'm mocha color anyway, but I came back pretty much espresso), and a respectable German work colleague said, "Wow, you look like a Neger." To which I said, "Say what?"... I know she wasn't trying to be racist, but I can't jelp that I have never looked at her the same again.
andrea
Just had an incident with Reece the other night regarding the word "nigger". Alex and him were in the kitchen emptying the dishwasher, Reece has to put the cutlery away, and apparently, Alex told me later, Reece was picking up the knives and forks and saying "come here you little niggers" and on putting them in the drawer was saying "got to bed you little niggers". Of course Alex explained that he couldn't use that word and Reece couldn't understand why because it's in the songs that Alex recorded for him (he loves his rap music). We've kind of explained it to him now and he seems to understand a bit more.

Stangely enough, all of Alexs friends are white and all of Reeces friends are black. And even more strangely, Reece tells everyone he's a quarter jamaican because his brother is half jamaican .
I really need to sort that boy out

The problem of racism is well documented in the 'States', however there is an on-going dialogue between the various groups. I beleive the situation is improving in the USA because it is in the open, and discussed often(in the media), where as in Europe many people are in 'denial' about race and skin color as factors in their daily lives. For many people in Europe the subject is uncomfortable and they can't come to terms with the fact a lot of them are racist.

That sounds like a shockingly sweeping statement to me. I suppose you are extrapolating from one or two personal experiences. I find it quite remarkable that you think it is possible at all to make any statement on this matter that would be equally true in only the majority of European countries. Racism exists just about everywhere (sweeping statement?) but I think in most semi-respectable countries it is at least recognised to be a problem.

I'd say it's also well documented in the UK.

Ok, I suppose I will have to spell it out really s-l-o-w-l-y. I disagree. I think your original post is just wrong, complete and utter nonsense. I am really not trying to be offensive but for every single one of the European countries I am able to talk about in a reasonably informed manner I can assure you that what you said bears no resemblance of reality.

Honestly, LeChamois I really beleive you are 'one' of those people that 'post' on this 'site' that is really trying to become a better person. So I will try to say this s-l-o-w-l-y to you. Europeans, for the most part are in 'denial' about 'r-a-c-i-s-m(and the history of Europes' racist past), as well as some of their American counter-parts! Does that help?

Shut the fuck up already. Racists are in a minority. Why do people deny being racists? Maybe because THEY AREN'T. I don't like you at all and it's not because I'm racist -- I have no fucking clue how much melanin your skin has -- but for the very specific reason that you are an annoying twat who not only won't shut up but who sits there making sweeping generalisations and calling everyone racists. I can't decide whether it's funny or sad that you don't realise that you're EVEN WORSE than the racists you bitch about. They dislike specific groups of people. You accuse everyone -- including people you never fucking saw in your life -- of possessing a certain trait or mindset, and your peabrain doesn't understand this. You spew tautologies and prejudice like they're going out of style. You're an ignorant boor and you're worse than the racists you keep complaining about. And along the years, I've come to realize that Germans have an uncontrollable, inherent impulse to blatantly stare at me like I must have winning lotto numbers burned into my face, which, while is disturbing

Yes, Germans stare but it is not due to racism or Ausländerfeindlichkeit. The cause of all this staring is rooted in the past, it the big-brotherish type of behavior of the Stasis in the east and there has always been a strong sense of civic duty in the West, it is especially strong in grey haired individuals (grannies). The Spiegel referred to it as the "Germanic Stare down" Don't take it personally, they stare at everyone,even each other.

'Borg Queen'(is this correct(?). You state that this 'staring' is because of ("the big-brotherish type of behavior of the Stasis in the east"). Right? Has nothing to do with racism of foreigners. Right? OK, even though I am skeptical, I give you the benefit-of the-doubt.
Now, why do they(Germans) stay with their parents until sometimes mid thirties? The Parents often times pay all of the bills too for these 'grown-ups'!

This is a thread about racism, not over-30s who live with their parents. Stay on-topic.

In my travelling experience that is an over analysis. I lived in Italy, Spain and Germany as a black man and they ALL stared - similiar to Germany.
Never really bothered me too much..my sister got so pissed after 5 years living in Italy she would say something i.e. what the fuck are you staring at. It did though, get a bit disconcerning when you were eating in some yick of a restaurant in Spain (and they were all staring like a Cowboy Western) but...I put it down to me being exotic compared to the black sellers/traders on the street!!

So I don't think you need a huge sociological explanation - some cultures it seems teach their children not to stare at differences and others do not...

If there are any half-germans/germans here or people with the experience about what so-called manners are taught in Germany that would clear it up...as for me - one was always told as a kid not to stare "It's rude to stare"... (Standard saying to Brits - I think! - even working class oinks like me).

@BadDoggie,

The statements you posted as being contradictory, in my understanding, are not mutually exclusive - to say people are in denial can mean to the history or the extent of the problem i.e. slavery, and racisim etc. and then Dseventh mentioned that he believed that Racist are a minority...so I think you picked up on the wrong post there to attack.

Where Dseventh_son went too far was with his opening line:

For many people in Europe the subject is uncomfortable and they can't come to terms with the fact a lot of them are racist.

@Dseventh,

That is the statements that has meant you haven't endeared yourself to the TT community and have started off on a bad foot. A little bit sweeping especially as you will find huge differences between the history of torelance and level racial harmony within Europe...

Finally - PS. I find it hilarious how people attack someone for stereotyping when most arguments and opinions on TT are mere generalisations - but eh one man's Stereotype can be another man's experience!!!

I’ll admit to that. The first time I remember seeing a black man I stared at him. I was not very old at the time. I think it is perfectly natural human behaviour. It is our culture (“it is rude to stare) that prohibits us from doing so. I have been on the receiving end of staring plenty of times since then in places my looks made me stand out – and I do not think my looks are that outstanding. Once the novelty wears off the staring stops. I do not think a bit of staring marks anyone as a racist, although I do know that it can get a little annoying when it goes on for too long.

Exactly my point...it's doesn't mean much - in fact in the case of my sister - she's pretty and was getting stared out also because she was a pretty black girl in italy and exotic to boot. Unfortunatley, she is the type that couldn't handle it! She went to Spain on holiday last year (she lives in the UK now) and was horrified to be stared at again...

One of the surrealist experience was being stared out in Bari (Italy) despite being in a throng of African Traders. The italians notice that I was different (most probs in their heads American) and they stared...so in that case I was different two ways...non-Italian and non-African Trader!!!

Like I said to me - I don't notice it...or let it freak me out...
Carm

as a women, I can say it does get exhausting and annoying. I travel alot, and have been stared at in many countries for being white, tall, red head, at first you are flattered, but after a week or so, its fucking annoying. Expecially if you are by yourself.
I had moments in Egypt, Kenya, India, Turkey, China and Russia (okay it was the USSR at the time but still), I did enjoy my travels, but would think twice again, about traveling alone to some of these places.
stanford
@Carm,

Yeah that's the difference in my case - I'm a guy and if some lovely Germans, Italians or Spanish ladies want to stared at me then it's okay if not wonderful for my ego! My White/Tall/Blonde German wife had the same experience in Egypt and said it got too much in the end...and so now is not so keen to travel back there.

The issue of racism is very real. It is easy to make 'oneline' statements when you are not the one being affected by racists.
Anyone who tries to get people to think(outside of the norm) like me will be attacked or marginalized. I expect this.
