I have been in Munich for 4 months. And my social life sucks ass! mad.gif

Been trying going to so-called international student parties, yet met absolutely NOBODY. Boy, it's getting really frustrating now. I am starting to ponder if my race is giving people second thought about knowing me. I mean I am a Chinese inside-out, yet my English is almost better than my Chinese.

I am just wondering, while you are at a party, what will be the first thing in your mind if you see a Chinese hanging around with a drink? In this kind of circumstances, people just ignore me. F**k!
Keydeck
I always wonder if you refer to Chinese food just as food.

Have you come out to any of the TT nights? It's usually a pretty welcoming crowd. However, it's up to you to make the initial effort. If I am out with friends I am unlikely to go to someone standing by the wall and invite them to chat whether they are Chinese or whatever. However, if you approach me then you'll be made welcome and then you're well on the way to making some friends. If you just stand on your own with your drink then you are quite likely to stay that way. You gotta make the first move. My reasoning is quite simple. I already have a lot of friends in Munich so I do not need to go out of my way to make more.

Oh, and avoid the use of the word clique, it's guaranteed to piss any number of people off due to fact that the people who use it often don't really know what the word means and generally have no real friends of their own and so are jealous of those who do.

Ditto the above or go to one of the football or rugby matches at The Arc or Outland or Gunters, sport is always a good conversation opener when amongst strangers.

give me another clue here, what drink are you holding, it makes a difference to the first thing that will come to me mind.

I'd probably be interested in asking you about recent economic development in China and a few generally history based things - I'm dull in that way though.

(not that you holding a drink or not would make that much difference really)

If you were a chick, and I was single, and the conversation with my mates was getting boring, and I was slightly drunk, the first thoughts in my mind would be dirty. I miss asian puss. Actually I miss puss in general.

Otherwise I would probably ignore you.

In general, it's going to be either rum and coke or beer.

Cool, so where do TTers hang out usually, Twisted Bavarian?

And yest, we do call Chinese food just as "food"
SleeplessInMunich
TT'ers hang out in lots of different places. Check out the events forum to see what's happening.

A whole four months? In open, friendly, luv-ta-get-ta-know-ya Germany?

Wah wah wah! My social skills appear to be as lacking as my understanding of a foreign culture. They must be racists!

Has your entire effort to expand your social life been limited to a few boring international student "parties" where the few who know each other or speak the same language huddle together for some fleeting support amidst the ocean of foreign ways they've been swimming in?

Find some activity you like to do and go do it. With others. It doesn't matter what. Horseback riding, skiing, go-karting, knitting circle, maybe join some Sportverein, do something besides playing Nintendo alone at home. If you go to bars, go to the same damned ones regularly.

Whatever you do, don't bitch about the (mistakenly) perceived racism. You're making a much bigger deal about your being Chinese than anyone else here. Playing the race card is guaranteed to drive people away.

woof.

I would think of a very un-PC rhyme but if the guy looks like he would join a crowd at the least provocation chances are I might encourage him to do so. Providing he takes the silly little umbrella out of the rum&coke and doesn't drink through a straw.

Dude, please, I am not saying anyone is racist. THEY ARE NOT! It's just that, it usually happens that I am the only Chinese in a party. So I am the the odd one OUT, that's all. And yes, apologies. I shouldn't include the word "race" here, it ticks people off easily.
Topsy
just turn up to TT Tuesday next week, or go to the curry night next wednesday if you like curry
you'll soon get chatting to people smile.gif

I hope you are kidding right? I am usually the non-white person at any cafe in Regensburg. I am Mexican and we all know Munich is bursting at the seems with us Mexicans. Actually I find somewhat of a novelty. In fact I think it is a little unfair that more Central &South American are not represented at TT eveents so sometimes I make up where I am from. This week I think I will be from Peru. I hope no one has a problem with peruvians here. As for being outcasted race has nothing to do with it. I think my being a tramp has more to do with that. So enjoy TT Jerry. If I see ya at an event I will say hey(unless it is not at The Arc then I probably will not be there). wink.gif

I don't know if this is asked yet but...

How often do you go up to a group of people and introduce yourself? Usually, you can join in the conversation by putting in your two cents. Try not to break up the conversation by asking the typical "So, where you from...what do you do?" No offence to all those who do that but it's damn annoying when you're in the middle of a good conversation. Just talk about that later...

Just my thoughts smile.gif

I prefer to just walk up to someone and lick their face.

Just my thoughts

Usually I am surrounded by people speaking German, and my German sucks. Sometimes I chip in by saying "If you can speak Chinese, it will really help"
Keydeck
Not really a sensible suggestion since you are in Germany. The onus is on you to make the effort to speak in German or at least suggest English as a viable middle-ground.

Anyway, come out on Saturday to Crawlie's do for lots of English speaking peoples.
sk8rgrl
Ok...the you're just at the wrong venue. smile.gif Find english people outings. See the Meetups section here.

Yes jerry just relax. I remember the first time I met sk8rgrl I was drunk and she put up with it and was quite nice. In fact everytime I see her I am drunk and she puts up with it. So there most TTers are pretty cool. just go to an event. I mean you cannot like sushi untill you try it. (right?)

Of course I was joking. Because I asked the question in English.

I'm sure this thread didn't have this title before... or am I going mad?
Do you only want to meet Chinese people?
arshoo
@topsy, right you are huh.gif the mods changed it obviously not wanting chinese people to start meeting non-chinese smile.gif
Jerry
The title was "how to make a bunch". I want to meet any cool people. I think the Chinese people to meet here is ME.
BadDoggie
Solely on the strength of your being Chinese? For that to work with me you'd need to be a hot girl. I haven't dated a Chinese girl since college although mum and her (Chinese) friend did consider going over to the Central Empire to bring me back a bride (after my own choice crashed and burned).

woof.
Jerry
can't help you there, I'm a bloke
BadDoggie
Got a hot, single sister? Cousin?

Yes, but you have to speak Chinese
