BabyCenter.co.uk - What is TENS?

QUOTE (BabyCenter.co.uk)
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS machine consists of a small box, about the size of an audio-cassette case with a clip on the back so you can attach it to the belt of your dressing gown (or whatever you are wearing in labour). The machine gives out little pulses of electrical energy. There's also a boost button for you to hold in your hand and press when you want maximum output from the machine to help you with a difficult contraction.

The pulses prevent the pain signals from your womb and cervix from reaching your brain and also stimulate your body to release its own, natural "feel good" substances, called endorphins. TENS works best if you start using it at the very beginning of your labour because it takes about an hour for your body to respond to the electrical impulses by releasing endorphins. Hire a TENS machine and use it at home before you go into hospital — very few hospitals provide TENS units.

I believe that TENS machines are not used here .. you would have to try other forms of pain relief. I've had my 2 kids here and the form of pain relief offered was the Epi

Thanks for replying.

I used TENS and gas and air when I had my 2 in the UK. Are TENS machines used in a non-pregnancy situation?

I will have to consider getting one from the UK I think.

Yes they are, apparently, but I won't go into detail on the "Family life" forum...
Sorry, I had genuinely never heard of them being used in a pregnancy context.
Hope you get yourself sorted out smile.gif

Hi there,

Just read your post.

I hired a TENS when I had my daughter 3 years ago, had to hire from UK though, can't remember the price but it wasn't outrageous. They send it at about 36-37 weeks then I think you can keep it for about a month. smile.gif

As far as I remember they are not used here, got some funny looks from the midwives but they did let me get on with it! It was great for early stage labour. The only alternative they offered was an epidural, I don't like them so I was glad I'd got the TENS.

I hired it from tenshire.com

Hope this helps

You won't get gas and air here either (in case you weren't warned about that)
