Currently at number 10 in the
British pop music charts is a song called "Munich".
This is a record by a British indie rock band called "Editors".
Despite the title, the song apparently has nothing to do with our city of Munich. The lyrics carry no mention of Munich beer, the Oktoberfest, nudity in the
English Gardens, FC Bayern, or Weißwurst and Leberkäse. In fact, the lyrics don't seem to be about very much at all.
It's a good song though. Will be popular with those who enjoy listening to Franz Ferdinand and the likes. According to the BBC reviewers:
QUOTE (BBC Collective)
The introduction of ‘Munich’ will hit you like a cricket ball at about 90mph, however, rather than result in pain and potential concussion, you will be brainwashed into the dark yet charming planet of indie-goth, a whole new (or re-hashed) sub-genre that’ll dominate your iPod for months. A crunching, even slightly chilling, guitar riff held up by sharp drums entwined around the soft, tidy tones of Tom Smith flow immediately over one other, thus one of the best tunes to hit the airwaves this year.
And the lyrics...
QUOTE (Editors)
I'm so glad I found this
I'm so glad I did
People are fragile things you should know by now
Be careful what you put them through
People are fragile things you should know by now
You'll speak when you're spoken to
It breaks when you don't force it
It breaks when you don't try
With one hand you calm me
With one hand I'm still

Yep - 'tis a good tune from a good band. Would like to know why it's called 'Munich' though.

When did it first come out? They've performed in Munich at least once, I think twice, from perusing the fan page. Maybe it was written while here?

Ah, good old Editors, Stafford Uni alumni. Used to go by the name of Snowfield, or something like that.

According to a piece on their website:
QUOTE
Ultimately that is what you do, as a singer and a musician,' thinks Tom. 'You absorb the world around you, the people, you emotional life, you feelings... And then you do something with it. You edit it, mould it into songs. Strange really no other band ever called themselves Editors. It´s the perfect name.' Words and language have Tom's special attention anyhow. 'For me, a word works primarily as an image. We thought the name Editors also looked good. Songtitles like Munich and Bullets likewise. They are shapes, symbols. In the accompanying lyrics there is not a single reference to those titles.
So that's cleared up then.

Think they got a review of it back on radio M94,5 (*) a few weeks / months (?) ago and the presenters were puzzled at why it was called Munich.
(*) The station for up and coming music, natch!

To most British people these days the name Munich apparently refers to some plane crash that apparently occured in the 1960s in which some football team apparently died.
To a previous generation, or to me as an Australian, the name Munich always is reminiscent of the infamous 1939 Munich pact, in which Chamberlain betrayed Czechoslovakia to Hitler (Peace in our time).
It could also refer to the 1972 Munich Massacre at the olympics. There is a Stephen Spielberg film out now describing it, so it is at least topical.
No idea what it is really referring to as I have not read all the words, but I would suspect one of the above.

Read the lyrics several times but have not a damn clue how it relates to Munich.
But the band is pretty good, but I cant see them lasting long. I mean lets face it, they are no Oasis or Coldplay. I see them more as a Keane.

Well, I'd rather they not release the same bloody album every year.
They sound more like Interpol.

Eh? I have heard a couple of Keane's efforts - shite pop music, no more. Utter crap.
This Munich tune on the other hand I have heard once and loved it.

The song was played on FM4 all last summer. If you like this band, you'll like Interpol.

We'll see how good they are by their second album, either ways. That's the test of being a good long term band.
I don't think Keane have really disappeared though, it hasn't been that long since their album was released, and although they are basically music for bed-wetters, they've probably got a couple of albums in them yet.
Keane's new album is out in May 06 - fyi

My late night blog:
Actually if you like Editors, why not check out the genuine article: Interpol. On second thought, you can also trace Interpol's roots: Joy Division. I don't think these guys sound like Jim Morrison, but rather like Ian Curtis. Or could there be an Ian Curtis / Joy Division & Jim Morrison / The Doors link?... great how music builds on itself over time.
And speaking of good music, I can recommend Art Brut, who is playing in the Elserhalle tomorrow (Thursday, the 12th of Jan). Otherwise, check out The Taste in the Atomic. I only wish I could go to both...

Oh Art Brut are simply brilliant. Shame I can't make it since I'm still in the Uk til Saturday

That's twice now that I've missed them in Munich.

I've just downloaded the album after hearing 'Blood' on FM4. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get past Blood (track 3) because I think it's fantastic.
Incidentally, anyone liking their beats a little faster should check out the Cicada remix of Munich. You can listen to it
here.

Their news is in English, so if you're having problems identifying which station it is, try tuning it in on the hour. Then you just have to listen out for the English! Doesn't work after about 7pm though, because then there's no news at all.

If you people out there like The Editors then you must check out Sheffield (England)'s latest offering, The Arctic Monkeys. Also mentioned in the thread regarding tickets, some people already know of them by now!!!A gaggle of young spotty faced northerners that somehow hit the nail on the head throught their lyrics. A cracker is "Mardy Bum" which describes the other side of the girl he loves. Lyrics such as " you're argumentative and you got the face on..."
Also some great guitar licks in there too
Check 'em out and comment please

Kitchens of Distinction ...also the music of The Chameleons ...top quality stuff anyway

And for our friends in the North I see that the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album has a track called "Berlin".
Also does not appear to have anything to do with Berlin.
For info:
Editors and also Interpol, are releasing new albums in June.
