In the states, there are charity events like American Cancer Society "Relay for Life" that the participants get donations from friends/family when they run. Is there anything like that here? Maybe something for kids with special needs?

The only charity run I know of in Munich is the Run for AIDS (Run For Life) and it takes place in September. The last 2 years Toytown had decent turnouts.

kks, I think you'll find a lot less community-based charity activity here than in the US. I guess the church and state pick up most of the responsibility for that, out of their collections and our taxes.
Be very wary of people going door-to-door, claiming to collect for charitable causes. This is not common here.
You will also be hard-pressed to find people wearing those silly ribbons and rubber bracelets representing a charitable cause. (Well, I think they're silly, and I'm always surprised to see them everywhere, every time I go back to the US.)
