Where are the GOOD Tex-Mex Restaurants?

Desperate cravings for Tex-Mex!

I've done a search and been to a few, but I've only found one Tex-Mex restaurant in Munich that I'll go back to. Alas having eaten Tex-Max 4 days a week in Houston, and having it here only 3 times since January, my cravings have come to a head.

Any suggestions on PROPER Tex-Mex food, e.g. preferably from former Texans, New Mexicans, Californians, etc. (but all suggestions welcome)? I'm talking about a plate the size of a hubcap, 1/2 rice, 1/2 refried beans, entree of choice in the middle and everything covered in cheese. My goal is to be bloated by the time the meal is over, wishing I hadn't eaten so much.

I may just make a go for it tonight if we get some good suggestions and anyone else is interested.

Don't know if its real tex-mex but can recommend Tijuana's along Leopoldstr. The portions are big, and the prices reasonable.

Waiters speak Spanish & German or English & German, you just have to hope you get the English speaking waiters !

Was in there once trying to translate for a work colleague of mine from Columbia, and he just started talking Spanish to the waiter ! Hmm.. all the effort to try and translate the menu descriptions (actual dish titles are in spanish) and a complete waste of time !
DrivinWest
I was thinking about Tijuana's - I've heard good things about the portions and the margaritas there as well.

I can highly recommend Tacos y Tequila but that is definitely more of a date place.
Ketchup
As a Texan, I can recommend Sausalitos although I haven't been in a while. It's really the only Tex-Mex restaurant i've found to be almost worthy of being called Tex-Mex. Can't say too much about other Tex-Mex places because I more or less gave up looking because Tex-Mex in Germany is usually total shit. In one place I was actually given a bottle of Tabasco when I asked for Salsa for the chips.

Happy Hour at Sausalitos is also a good idea if you can get a table. Good Ritas and also Hurricanes that'll knock you on your ass. Oh yeah, you can also order drinks by the pitcher which also does provide authenticity. Come to think of it, not a bad after-work idea if anyone's interested. Maybe Wed night?

I have pretty much given up. Also coming from the South, Mexican Food was a staple of our diet, and whenever I have gone to a "Mexican" resteraunt here, I have always been disappointed. Actually, I found Tacos y Tequila the worst of the ones I've been to. Enchilada's was the best food I've had at a Mexican resteraunt in Munich, but still not Mexican.

What I really crave is the bottomless and free fresh-made salsa, and just-fried chips.
butterbean
OMG...fresh salsa and just-fried chips...margaritas made with fresh lime and good tequila and not dried whiskey sour mix...spicy food that is, in fact, spicy...

I honestly think I might start crying.. sad.gif
DrivinWest
UGGGHHH!!! Bottomless salsa and chips! Refried beans (a PLATEFUL, not a tiny cup)! Brown rice!

That's it, I wanna open a Tex-Max place here!
Elfenstar
go to that mexican shop that was mentioned here a few days ago and see what they recommend. maybe they have little bistro in the back. otherwise i found sausalito's to be decent. has anyone tried joe penas here? they have one in stuttgart and it was ok.

i actually made myself an omlette on sunday and ate with it old el paso hot salsa the best i've tried which is available at supermarkets in germany. it ain't nothing like what i'd get in east austin, but at least the "hot" is spicy.
butterbean
oh, elf, old el paso??? is that what it comes to?

now I know I'm going to cry...
DrivinWest
Hey butterbean, at least Old El Paso is better than than stuff made in New York City!?

Any non-Americans get that? Any actually reading this thread?
Showem
Get a rope.
DrivinWest
Err, lasso?
Showem
Now you are disappointing me. The commercial that stands out in my memory is after the cowboys read that the non-El Paso Salsa was made in New Jersey (or NYC), the biggest and the toughest one says "Somebody get a rope", with the hint they were going to string up the varmit who brought the crap salsa.

But in a desperate attempt to keep this thread on topic, I will add my two cents that Sausalitos is pretty hit and miss with their food in my opinion. I do remember going somewhere I was impressed with, but for the life of me, can't remember where it was. I'll let you know when and if I recall it.
willy
You can get most of the above mentioned ingredients at Muenchener Freiheit's Karstatt (in the basement) ... Ole!
Showem
Yes, I remember now!

I mentioned it in another post that Cantina Mexicana & Churrascaria Brasil had a great buffet of Tex-Mex starters. I haven't eaten the food off the menu, having always gone for the Rodizio, but there were Tex-Mex dishes there. What I remember on the buffet was fresh salsa, guacamole, refried beans and a strange but tasty mix of diced onions and other veggies. Corn on the bob, baked potatoes, thin crepes with cheese melted between them. Highly recommended!

Tex-Mex I am not too sure of, but a great Mexican place is Tres Hombres and it calls itself a "Mexican Bar - Restaurant - Cafe"
Sporting an authentic Mexican cuisine at great prices, this great find has nice atmosphere. The bar is run by a Spanish guy Roberto who is ALWAYS SO HAPPY to see you. Wooden benches and tables with Spanish/Mexican music in the background complete the ambience. Between the four of us we had one HUGE Hamburger, an emmense Slab of Ribs, a great Pollo Fajita and very nice Burrito Pollo. Total price with beer, salads, entrees and a smile was about 60 euros total for the four of us.

To get there: U3 to Brudermühlstraße and head East on Brudermühlstr. for two blocks. (Head toward the factory smoke stacks.) It is the last building on the right before the road turns into Candidstrasse.
Corner of Schaftlarnstrasse (First A has umlaut) and Brudermühlstraße. Schaftlarnstr. 62 , 81371 -Thalkirchen Munich
Telephone - 089/724 00 716
Opened Daily from 5pm - Closed Thursdays.
kathie
used to live just down the road from Tres Hombres (if that's what it's called now) and it's changed hands and names threee times in as many years... always seemed to be the same type of place though. Of course, seeing as it was only about 200m away, I never went...!
SZ_Editor
Actually, it was PACE salsa that was made in Texas, the other stuff (which was an old el paso jar) was from New York City.

right you are sz! when i first got to germany they had PACE. i thought, okay i can survive this land, then they renamed it Fiesta or something like that cause PACE means "peace" in Italian. well, just bullshittin' ya, don't know why they changed the name, but after that it didn't taste the same.

i went through various dips, then gave up until i discovered Old El Paso (thanks b.s.). I said, hallelujah! hot damn!
DrivinWest
Can any of you be talked into some Mexican tonight? Elf & Butterbean, you should be givens!
Jimbo
I could be persuaded - what time and where?
DrivinWest
I'm thinking 7:30 or so? As for where, I'd like to go someplace new... no Tacos & Tequila, no Sausolitos, and no Los Banditos.
sparty
There is a place on Leopoldstrasse that has happy hour on food and drinks until 20:00. It's on the north west exit of the Giselastrasse ubahn station. I have never been in there but it looks allright...
Jimbo
Do you mean Tijuana? I thought that was further South - it's supposed to be good but hard to get a table apparently. The Mexican to the North Eastern side of Giselastrasse is rubbish...can't even remember the name, but the food there is shite.
Ketchup
Believe me, i'd love to come but since i'm only here Mon-Thur at the moment I won't be able to make it.

@Elfenstar
Don't you live somewhere near Mannheim? I live in Mannheim so maybe we could hook up over there sometime.
Elfenstar
was going to head back much later, but if mexican is on the agenda, then i'll take an earlier train! yee-ho. can't make it til 8.30 though, baring any delays on the DB side.
Bubble Gum
I would come but can't! I'm going to a concert tonight biggrin.gif . Maybe meet up with you guys afterwards for drinks if you want.
DrivinWest
OK, if we want to do this we can get me, elf, jimbo in - anyone else??
Renfield
Count one more ami in.
Renfield
sparty
Count me in too... are we going to that Mexican place on Leopoldstrasse with the happy hour until 20:00? If so, we'll have to make a reservation. I have no idea what it's called though...I've passed the place a couple of times but I can't remember the name... sad.gif
Jimbo, I'm not sure if that's the one you say is rubbish...The one I mean is between Wimmer and the exit of the ubahn station.
Jimbo
I mean something like Don Juans or something equally as obvious as that. Tijuana is a little further down on the other side - it has a big terrace out front. According to TT Tijuana does have a happy hour though - basically I have no idea though. This is Drivin' West's party so he can name the location - any of the three or four around Schwabing are good for me I think (provided I'm well enough - I do have a touch of a cold coming on).

Chili Relleno should cure that quick.

Aight, lemme take a look around and I'll pick a place shortly.
bubblylady
Sparty, you mean Tapa Tapas! Happy hour on cocktails and food, but isn't really nice. Service is not very good either. Open till four o'clock in the morning with a tiny club in the basement.
Once you have been to the places DW's mentioned, you will be very disappointed. No at atmosphere in that place at all.
Keydeck
That place serves primarily as a pitstop for the people who fall out of Günthers pissed. A few years back it used to be the Günthers, Shamrock, Pipifax triangle. Now it seems to be Günthers and and that Tapas-Tapas. Awful place so it is.
Elfenstar
Hey DW, the menu of the mexican place in Bamberg Villa in Luitpold Park has a good selection. Prices are high though. €8 and up for a cocktail, but happy hour til 8 and from 10.30 to 1 a.m. tonight. You can see the menu in PDF format.
bubblylady
If you're going to Bamerger Villa I really would like to join you!
DrivinWest
Bamerger Villa AKA Cantina Mexicana & Churrascaria Brasil (Brunnerstr. 2, Schwabing)

Sounds pretty good.
Jimbo
Problem with that DW, is I'm not sure about post dinner entertainment up there... The beauty of the Leopoldstr. ones is the proximity to a number of other bars, and of course GMs...
Showem
It's a sad case if you can't entertain yourselves, especially in a place that serves alcohol.

I don't know what it's like during the week, but I would advise making a reservation.
bubblylady
have to give my lesson, damn thursday. But am so interested in that place. Must be gorgeous. Can I join you later, if ur going and still be there at 10 or 10:30pm?
DrivinWest
Well my #1 goal is good food, but I've been up for trying the Loep places since I arrived here. Is Don Luca's the place you're talking about?
Jimbo
QUOTE
Is Don Luca's the place you're talking about?

That's the place - it's fucking shite. I could go into a Don Riina style rant here, but I'm busy surfing car websites this afternoon - suffice to say though that I shall never set foot in there again.
DrivinWest
OK, scratch that. Tijuana's? I think I heard they have huge portions.
Bubble Gum
It's true Don Luca's has really bad food!! I've never been to Tapas Tapas (it looks sort of sketchy), but I've been to Tijuana's and it seemed alright (I can't remember, it was a while back). Thoguh it's probably better when it's warmer since you can sit outside.
Jimbo
If you can get a table I'm in - we will need to reserve. For those who don't know Tijuana is by the Southwestern exit of Giselastr. Ubahn - I just looked out the window and can confirm this.
DrivinWest
Hey Jim, can you call and try to get a reservation? If we put in for 6 I think we should be good for +/-1 or 2 right?
Jimbo
We need to work out a time do we not??? And why am I calling?!?!? tongue.gif
sparty
Because DW doesn't speak a word of German...? tongue.gif

EDIT: DW, when you call, you can always ask if it's a problem when there are 2-3 more.
Jimbo
Shouldn't have moved to Germany then, should he??? tongue.gif

Seriously - I've got something to do for a wee bit so I'm gonna vanish now, but reappear a bit later - either somebody book it and post that they have, or i'll do it upon my return...
DrivinWest
I speak half-way decent German, BUT, yours is still better! Say 7? Sparty can you call?
