I saw
this on the BBC:
QUOTE
People around the world are being invited to vote in a survey for the New Seven Wonders of the World. A privately funded organisation, the New 7 Wonders Foundation, has put forward a shortlist of 21 landmarks from across the globe.
One of those wonders up for consideration is
Neuschwanstein castle in Füssen, not too far from us here in Munich.

list of places to vote for.
It turns out that
the Munich Olympic Stadium and the Deutsches Museum were also up for consideration but didn't make the short list.
QUOTE
The Olympic Stadium in Munich was recently nominated by the public to come on the N7W nominees. This event has celebrated with a N7W balloon flight out of the gigantic stadium - in the presence of Mr. Ude, Mayor of the city of Munich together with his wife and other official - on 28 October 05.
QUOTE
Other German nominations include the Deutsches Museum in Munich, the cathedrals of Aachen and Cologne, the Goetzschtal bridge in Vogtland and the Ladies church in Dresden.
Is Neuschwanstein a wonder because it is so grotesque?

Can I vote for the new stadium? I wonder why they thought they needed it and all its new infrastructure.

there's some strange choices in that list, though...
i would vote for that gherkin doodah in london, i think it looks great
other than that, i guess petra, the kremlin and the taj mahal
and maybe the great wall of china

I don't think I would consider Neuschwanstein one of the wonders of the world either, but there you go.
Keydeck
Jan 2 2006, 3:15 pm
Also, I was under the impression that the pyramids of Giza were already on of the seven wonders. Certainly one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Only one still existing as far as I recall. I suppose if they're doing a 'current' list then it's ok to include them.
Not given such company as Machu Piccu, the Great Wall of China and the Easter Island statues. Tis a nice building and gives a focal point for Disney & Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang fans but I wouldn't exactly call it a wonder, or a Wonder for that matter.

Yeah, a bit strange that you can't vote online and the list is missing a few candidates that should be there. If stonehenge gets considered then Newgrange should definitely be there. And No leaning tower of Pisa, no St. Peters cathedral, or the Gaudi (sp?) cathedral in Barcelona?

what's Newgrange?
Keydeck
Jan 2 2006, 3:20 pm
Tis an ancient thingymajiggy in Ireland. Underground passagy whassisname with lumpy whoja on top. Sun shines in through the little hole thingamy at a certain time of the year and all the druids get stoned, 'cause that's wot they do. They drink bucket loads of mead and smoke special "herbal" cigarettes.

Or
see here for a marginally more expansive explanation.
As for the bar, cheers. Twas all down to Badger and the Bosch.

And IW, if you look at the link of Newgrange it says it was built 3200 BC aswell and is currently still standing.

Seems to be, yes. According to that link they estimate Ħaġar Qim as c.3200-2500BC whereas Newgrange is c.3200BC or a little older. Plus, that Qim gaff has no roof!

Jan 2 2006, 3:37 pm
SO, umm...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newgrange shows that it'd be at least as old, possibly older...so...inflatable...umm...close, not quite.
ahh, I was beat...slow typing and drinking...that's my excuse today, oh, and I was picking my nose, too.
guess it depends on how you define it...
Keydeck
Jan 2 2006, 3:38 pm
In fact, the Wikipedia entry for
Ħaġar Qim specifically mentions Newgrange.

Ħaġar Qim is one of the old standing buildings in the world, although pipped by a good few weeks by Newgrange in Ireland.
A few weeks?!?!?! hahahahahahahah. Rigggggggggggggggggggggght.
Oh and is that newgrange thing really freestanding? It's a big mound of earth with a hole dug into it!
NOFXmike
Jan 2 2006, 3:44 pm
SleeplessInMunich
Jan 2 2006, 3:45 pm
No IW, its not a mound of earth. Its a structure built out of rocks.
SleeplessInMunich
Jan 2 2006, 3:48 pm
@NOFXmike, again that is just the remains of something. There isn't actually a building left. Newgrange however is still standing and pretty much intact.

Either way, it depends on how you define it.
I'd think Malta would be more impressive to see...

Not really, it's either intact or it's not and that Japanese thingy most certainly is not. As to which of the Qim or Newgrange sites is more impressive, for me neither would really light my ceremonial candle.
Anyways, on doing a tiny bit of Newgrange research I came across my favourite descriptive sentence of the day:
QUOTE
Despite his great power and prestige, the Dagda is sometimes depicted as oafish and crude, even comical, wearing a short, rough tunic that barely covers his rump, dragging his great penis on the ground.

Why do you think Malta would be more impressive? Because its a ruin?

Have you invested money in a hotel near this thing or something? Your very defensive of that bunch of rocks.
SleeplessInMunich

Keydeck "Not really, it's either intact or it's not and that Japanese thingy most certainly is not."
...umm, I was referring to the other two, both of which are sorta intact, one is a ruin, one was dug up, apparently...if you read...
Sleepless: because there's just simply more to see... look @ the pictures of both, then take in the area, what else is around either one, Malta looks much more impressive.

Jan 2 2006, 3:58 pm
You can go inside Newgrange. The building itself is massive.
That Malta thing probably isn't very impressive when it's pissing down rain whereas Newgrange is the world's oldest fully functional stone umbrella.
NOFXmike
Jan 2 2006, 4:01 pm
You only go sight-seeing when it's raining Yeti? impressive
In Ireland you have no choice.
Looks like a poll is the only way to know for sure if Malta has in fact a bigger dick than Newgrange. I doubt it though, seeing as its only a pile of rubble whereas newgrange is still standing.
Keydeck
Jan 2 2006, 4:07 pm
Absolutely. Newgrange and the Tuatha de Danann versus Hagar's Quim. Quite the battle it'll be. Ancient Irish citizens versus some viking blokes birds muff. Quality.

Jan 2 2006, 4:11 pm
Is it "standing" is the question...it's just a fuckin' mound of dirt and rock...
Again, depends on how you define a building. someone have any pics of the peni in question? maybe that'd clear things up...though if you do have some, I'll take your word on it, I don't need to see'em...

The mound covers the building NOFXmike, which is probably the reason it's still standing.
"Madge, I always hated that old Grange your mother gave us for the wedding, so I built a new one. What do you think of it ?"
"Christ Mikey, cover it up quick, her chariot is coming up the drive."
