German car registration plates are region specific

A waste of time & effort - system change required

According to the following artcile from the BBC website: A French game of numbers, France may well give up its archaic method of car registration which is very similar to Germany's. As in Germany, if someone moves department in France they have to go through the bother of de- and re-registering their car and changing it's number plate.

And I couldn't agree more with this comment, made me laugh out loud - "It is a senseless waste of time and money, serving only to reinforce a pathological obsession with order that belongs to another era."

Maybe in the next century or so, Germany may catch up. After all, as I found out recently when we moved, you no longer have to personally de- and re-register, just re-register. The nice lady told me that they were trying to make things easier. Well, a step in the right direction, eh?!

In France, the number plates on vehicles detail the part of the country the car and its occupants are from. But a new money-saving measure is about to change this system and, according to John Laurenson, the French may miss it once it has gone.

UK is moving in the German direction from what I hear but on a regional rather than council by council basis.

The police argument that having the year number and a fixed link between a vehicle and its number for easier witness recognition holds less water now apparently - they are also running out of numbers.

What the hell? That link (which does point to the BBC) redirects me to www.microsoft.com.. I feel all dirty now, I think I might need to reformat..
