Welcome, Renia.
It's a little OT, but if you do have a baby in Munich while living near
Goetheplatz, be sure to check out the Paracelsus Klinik in Mozartstrasse for the delivery. My daughter was born there last July, and we were very comfortable there.
See this thread, posts 37 and 38 for addresses of the "Familie Drs. Krauss", who all accept public patients and are affiliated with Paracelsus Klinik.

Thanks Carm and Cinzia
I read the posts about him again, he sounds very good and to have the option of giving birth near home would be nice for everyone (particulary as I would have my non German speaking parents over looking after my children at that time- but Freyja will be able to translate for them by then anyway :-) ).
Now I will have to read all the giving birth in Munich threads too...

Recently arrived and looking for any recommendations for OB/GYN South of Munich (i.e Solln/Pullach/Grunwald) who take public patients and speak English? Thanks for any suggestions.

Check out the British and American Consulates websites. They have a list of English speaking professionals.

ok. i have to say i am a bit confused. i just made, then cancelled an appointmet with dr hildersheid, mostly because i just moved here and am trying to get my insurance straight (although there did seem to be some conflicting reports about her...), and it was going to cost me 100-200 (probably 200) for a visit if i pay out of pocket, which is probably normal, but i have never paid so much in europe. does anyone know of a good gyno in neuhausen? i just need a check up, although, of course i would love to find a doctor that i can build a relationship with.
thanks ladies...

Does the
Neuhausen gyno have to speak English? My German speaking one is good:
Dr Ingrid Ackermann
Winthirstr. 31, 80639 München
Tel. (089) 16 46 07
Tram 12 stop Winthirstr.
Takes public and private patients and is also at the Frauenklinik vom roten Kreuz. Can't tell you if she speaks English as I only speak German with her. That price sounds about normal if it includes blood scans and ultrasound.

QUOTE (Renia @ May 23 2006, 8:19 pm)

I am new in Munich and am moving to the Isarvorstadt near
Goetheplatz next week. I would like to find a female gyn reasonably close by both for a checkup and also because if I get pregnant next year (as I would like), it would make sense for me not to have to travel too far...
my lady doc is dr. miltenberger at the
fünf höfe frauenklinik. it was dr. föst until they couldn't get me an appointment with her. from the posh-looking mothers and mothers-to-be, i assume she now only takes private patients. i couldn't gather anything from their website. but both speak english (dr. miltenberger was raised in the usa and d-land, i think).

I am actually looking for some advice from mothers who can recommend a good gync. for a friend of mine who just moved to Munich today (from NYC). She is now 5 months pregnant and is planning on starting a new life here. She is living in
Haidhausen near PrinzregentenPlatz. Any advice would be most welcome. I gave birth at the Geburtshaus München and never heard one word of English spoken which was really no problem for me but she is in a much different boat than I am as she just got off it!
Cheers,

I can recommend Dr. Summerer-Moustaki, also a NYC native so English is not a problem
Oddly enough, I went to see her this morning, I found her to be very professional and naturally her English is perfect.
Her contact details are in the other thread but here they are again:
Dr. Margarita Summerer-Moustaki
Schoenstr. 8 (
U1 Candidplatz)
089-65-53 86
Sorry I should add that she takes publicly-insured patients. Dr. Hilderscheid does not, but then again if your friend just got here she probably has private at the moment?

I go to the Funf Hoefe Klinik which is mentioned in the other thread too and have Dr Miltenberger. She really is very good and takes a lot of time with you. She is also very thorough and can speak English if you need her to. Highly recommended. Nice central location too.

Can anyone recommend a gynaecologist who has experience dealing with endometriosis? I'm hoping mine won't flare up while we're here, but in case it does, I want to be prepared, since it seems there's at least a three month wait to get in to see a gyno the first time. Fortunately, my doctor back in Canada prescribed me a year's worth of BCPs and painkillers before I left, but I still want to be prepared. Thanks.

Just for anyone wanting to go to Dr. Hildesheid; she will be moving.
New address from 7th August is Maffeistr. 4, Rückgebäude, 80333 München
Phone is 089 21268510
This is between
Marienplatz and
Odeonsplatz.
I`ve only been to her once so far, but thought that she was really nice. She took the time to talk to me and got the unpleasent stuff over and done with quickly.

No, she seemd pretty thorough.
I was just glad that she explained everything first rather than making me hang around half-dressed while she talked. I did go to one gyno who asked why I was looking so worried and then proceeded to tell me why I shuldn´t worry and how it was necessary for my health etc. while I was sitting there feeling very uncomfortable and just thinking "get on with it so it´s over as soon as possible".
I had the ultrasound pictures of my girly bits and got an explaination of what everything was and why it had been checked which was interesting and Dr Hildesheid was happy to give me time to answer all of the questions I had.

Hi,
Based on our experiences my wife and I would definitely recommend Dr. Hilderscheid. She was 5 months pregnant when we moved to Munich and Dr. Hilderscheid was always very nice and friendly and took out time to answer our questions. She is also extremely well-networked, which helps if you have any other medical problems.
I don't know how expensive she is (not having been to any other OB/Gyn we really don't have a benchmark) but what is insurance for?

La Mer, I third Dr. hilderscheid (again). Having been through a full pregnancy with her now I can really recommend her unhesitatingly.
Also for your friend who's just moved, I live right near by her, Schumannstrasse just down from PR platz and have a nearly 3-month-old baby. If she needs any help at all with all the pregnancy stuff and how it works here I'll be glad to meet her for coffee and talk her through stuff and pass on everything I've picked up about clinics and how it all works. Would be great to know another mum in my neighbourhood too. Just PM me if she's interested.

I have a related question - I'm insured in the US, but I've been based out of Germany for about 3 years and I'm getting mighty tired of having my mother send me my birth control pills every three months (not to mention that customs sometimes finds them and sends them back). One idea I had would be to visit a gynecologist here and have her prescribe me the pills. But I would be paying for all of it myself as my health insurance wouldn't cover it. So my questions are:
1) How much does a regular checkup cost, if I'm going to pay out-of-pocket?
2) Is there really a 3-month wait time for first visit?
3) How much does a birth control prescription cost, again out-of-pocket?
Thanks!
mizbunce
Aug 1 2006, 6:24 pm
The cost of a checkup probably varies wildly. It all depends on your history and what the doctor decides is necessary before writing a prescription.
But the cost of pills here is *so* much cheaper than in the states, you'd probably make up the cost in six months. I recall paying $30/mo for pills in the states. Here I pay more like 30 euros for 6 months.
I had no problem making an appointment within a couple of weeks.
(Why do you have US health insurance? If they won't pay for a checkup here, what good is it?)
hepat
Aug 2 2006, 6:47 pm
Thanks mizbunce! Currently I have US health insurance because I've been working for an american company, but since I quit recently it will run out shortly if I apply for COBRA and pay the scary prices. I've been thinking about getting private US health insurance for about $150/month, because private health insurance seems to cost about 300 EUR/month here. I don't qualify for public because I'm over 30 and I've never had it. Or at least, so explained the kind lady at the Technische Krankenkasse.

Aug 2 2006, 7:42 pm
Hi, no health insurance seems to cover the pill here; I have private and still have to pay. It costs (depending of course on the brand) around just under 30 euros for 6 months, which is a total jip. But what can you do. You don't really need an appointment for a prescription, or maybe just an initial one. The next time, just ask the receptionist and they print one out for you. The check up probably will cost around EUR 100.

Aug 2 2006, 9:11 pm
Thanks so much UrbanAngel! I go to the US often enough for a yearly doctor checkup, and if I were seriously ill I'd send myself back, so so far I don't think it's worth it to buy German health insurance; but this pill thing is really starting to get on my nerves. Historically I've paid anywhere from $8 to $20/month in the US for the pills (some health insurances cover it, others don't), but it's really something I don't want to have to talk to my mom about every three months. The prices seem to be really reasonable here; I'll call up my nearest gynaecologist this week and explain the situation, and get an appointment.
Thanks again UrbanAngel and mizbounce!

I have had great experience with the Pill here, its cheaper than my co-pay would have been in the states anyhow!
The Dr. visit I had was quite expensive however. For normal exam the dr. found it prudent to use an ultrasound machine. Interesting to see the internal bits on TV without being preggers, however a pretty penny to pay...this was most likely due to me being on private American insurance. The whole visit was around €200, with insurance recouping me for about 60%, so in the end all is ok.
Getting v. nervous over the big switch to German public insurance tho...

Does anyone know anything about Dr. Eva Maria Jung near
Goetheplatz - and if she speaks English well? I moved to Munich about 3 weeks ago with my husband, am 4.5 months pregnant and found her name on the US Consulate Website. Just wondering if anyone had any knowledge/opinion of her. Additionally, I've got an appointment to check out the University City Hospital, as it's near my apartment, but wondered if there is another hospital(s) I should check out. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Pen, if the doc was on the Consulate web page, chances are that she speaks English because the Consulate caters to Americans and naturally, not all Americans speak German. If you're uncertain, call the doctor's office and ask the receptionist. She/he should be able to tell you. Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy!

I needed to know if anyone has been to see Dr. Margarita Summerer-Moustaki. All I know is that she is greek/german, she speaks excelent english and that she studied or took some courses in California.
But has anyone actually been to consult her?...
I heard she moved, I allready made an appointment for next tuesday the 19th. But wanted to hear any recommendations anyone might have.
Thanks!

I have been to her - no complaints and her staff speaks English also. The only odd thing is that you get naked with no paper sheet to cover you. Not that the paper sheet does much, but it is the illusion of coverage. But, that is just my American background - apparently that is common practice in Germany (and maybe the rest of Europe). I would certainly recommend her.

@KaBo7- yeah, I thought it was weird as well that they take a look at the top bits, then tell you to put your top back on and they look at the bottom bits...at least you could keep on your socks (fortunately mine were coordinate with my outfit).

Would it be weird to ask if they have something to cover you with? Because I'm certainly not comfortable with being totally naked...
Besides that, does anyone know where her office is at, at this moment?

Actually she told me that she is a native speaker and moved here for her German husband (they met in NY) so her English is native English. Some of her staff seem to speak it but one girl does not seem to (or want to). I never had the paper sheet experience, I had the top off/bottom on then bottom off/top on experience. What is weirder to me are the chairs, they remind me of dentist chairs rather than a normal table with stirrups which is what I am used to back home.
Her office is almost right at
Candidplatz.

@pituiri- probably not. you are only half naked at a time and a)its germany nudity isnt always associated with sex and

its your gyno, he/she sees a hundered of whatever you have each day...nothing to be worried about or fearful of!!!

I wear a long tshirt or blouse- so I don't feel like a dork standing there bottom half naked. For me is a comfort thing. Then when he is finished, and you are still sitting in the chair (legs down) I feel more comfortable talking to him (my doc) when I can sort of cover me up some.
Pituiri
Sep 16 2006, 6:21 pm
Thanks that sounds more comfortable, and I will wear a long shirt see if that makes a difference.
Other questions about pregnancy, does anyone know when they do the blood test like the triple test? In the USA they do it between the 15th and the 18th week is it the same here? How much do the test cost? How much does the consultation with the GYNO cost???
Last question, do they tell you the sex of the baby as soon as possible or do they wait till week 22-24 like in the USA?...
Too many questions I know, just that this is my first time away from home, and though it's only going to be for 3 months I still would like to have everything done on time...
Can anyone share their experiences? Do you get an ultrasound done? Urine test?.. What do you regularly do on the month to month check-ups?

My wife's first gynecologist in Germany. A male's perspective:
Freshly wed, wife is from Sweden, zero German, needs gynecologist.
I google on the net, come across Toytown, read the posts.
I download "the list" from the US Consulate and the UK Consulate.
US List is 34 pages, UK List has two. UK List gets dumped.
I narrow down the list to three doctors, but one real choice.
One phone call, and that is to
Dr. Summerer-Moustaki. Why?
+ She has high recommendations in the forum.
+ She is relatively young, so my wife can relate / be comfortable.
+ She is from NYC. NYC people are straight-shooters.
+ She takes Gesetzliche Krankenkassen.
Results:
+ Receive an appointment for the same afternoon (chance, but still a plus).
+ Great sunny office.
Candidplatz (
U1) with free parking across the street.
+ Attentive to details, very professional, thorough.
+ Great advice on the pill. Even recommended alternatives to the pill, that we are now considering.
+ At least one staff member speaks fluent english (but I assume they all would/should).
+ Pharmacy is right next door to pick up any prescriptions.
Quote from my wife: "SHE'S A KEEPER!"

Hi Nokia, if you go ahead and search in the top right for Gynecologist, there is a long thread about them. I got to Dr. Summerer Moustaki...she is American and great...all of her info should be in that thread. Good Luck.
