Some further info in response to some of the questions that have been asked:

Book trading:
We will sell and trade. It is possible that we will do some buying but I'm afraid that we will be extremely picky and we will pay very little. Trading your books will be a much better value. The trading policy is posted on the website: www.readery.de. A short explanation: For books originally bought from The Munich Readery (they will be rubber-stamped on the first page), we will give 40% of what you paid for them in bookstore credit, provided they still meet our minimum standards of salability. For books not bought from us, we will simply make an offer, if they are books we want. You can use your credit or let it accumulate; it's transferable, you can gift it to a friend; it never expires. But it is not redeemable for money.

Book selection:
I believe you will be very pleasantly surprised by our selection. In our various fiction categories, we'll be offering everything from Italo Calvino to Dante Alleghieri. From Wodehouse to Hornby. From Delillo to Tolstoy. From Paul Auster to William Dean Howells. From Pinter to Marlowe. And we will also have an excellent sampling of everything from Archer to Pilcher (mother and son)! As well, there will be more than two dozen non-fiction categories. Perhaps our one lack will be antiquarian books; our focus is almost entirely on readers, rather than collectors. Plus, with my 30 years of bookselling experience, I'm confident that I can provide the widest knowledge and most helpful service east of the UK (he said, modestly).

Wireless Internet access
We offer high-speed wireless Internet access in a quiet, pleasant setting. Bring your wireless-enabled laptop with you and relax in a comfy chair. Get a to-go beverage and/or a bite to eat from one of the many nearby cafés or bakeries and make yourself at home. The cost is €0.50 per 15 minutes (Bookstore credit not valid), or 1 free hour with any purchase over €5.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
See you in the shop!

Do I get to write the first mini-review?

I was in the shop this afternoon and was very, very impressed.

Lots of books, multiple copies of some, even, and a good selection of non-fiction, which I think is harder to find here than novels. The arrangement of the shelves at angles to one another is interesting and invites browsing. There are comfy-looking armchairs strategically scattered about. Best of all, for me, there was plenty of room to maneuver the stroller! Which believe me, is not the usual in this town. Very friendly service, too.

All you who have yet to check it out have a treat in store.

I can only add to the praise. €35 well spent excellent selection and really comfortable for a browse. I wish I'd taken more money as there were so many books I'd been looking for, including some I'd given up hope of finding.
Valentina
I've just been there tonight. Loads of books, nice atmosphere, friendly owner and lovely dog! Go there!

I stopped by today, the place is great, so many great books to choose from. I walked away with two and may have to go back tomorrow as I forgot one. Great location too, easy to find off the U2.

I popped into the "Readery" earlier tonight and I just wanted to add my praise. There is a very large selection of good/great condition books and the overall floor layout works very well...clean, un-cluttered space and the books nicely filed in alphabetical order by author surname in their relevant section. There are even some nice cosy seats to relax in whilst selecting.

I think the trading policy is really going to help make this bookshop work as they will not take anything and that can only help keep the already high standard going.

I shall be back again John, probably at the weekend as I forgot to look for some specific books, and I recommend anyone else to check it out as soon as possible.
perdido
Yes! I was there and it was well worth it. At least I think so. He took €35 from my pocket, but I still feel it was well worth it. I got some Garcia and some Vonnnegut plus others out of the mix. As for parking, it does not look good. But why drive when Munich has such a great public transport?

Another good thing is that they are located not too far from two of my favorite places: Karo Cafe and The Arc.

I have been in to the Munich Readery and loved it!

The selection of books was great, almost like a "normal" book store, and I thought the prices were reasonable. I'm also very happy that I can return them for 40% of the purchase price. John has been very helpful in reserving books that I emailed him about and also keeping a look out for books by authors I would like to read.

The bookshop has a lovely atmosphere, is kid friendly and is a great place to browse.

I love this store, fantastic range of good quality books at very reasonable prices. Most of the books sitting right in front of my sweaty face are from the readery. I recommend all english book hunters I meet to go there.

Its an ok shop. I think the prices are fine, i have only been paying around 4.50 for each book or something. My only minor criticism is that I havent been able to find many of the books I want, seems mostly newish books and big names, and this is not so much a criticism but a matter of taste, I would use the space a bit better, not try and lay it out all light and airy like a shicky micky fashion shop, I would try and squeeze in maybe 10 times the number of books, have then in cartons, on and under tables, stacked up on the floor and window sills etc like most 2nd hand bookshops. I would like to see more older books regardless of condition, I would rather find some tatty but readable old book than not find it at all. Does the building have a basement? It would be cool to expand into there, and loosen up the standards for book condition. The second hand bookshop in Amsterdam is pretty cool you can find almost anything there.
SleeplessInMunich
I found the books in the store to be overpriced for my liking. I can easily tell you were you can pick up many of the same books for for a lot less here in Munich.

The thing is that you have a second-hand book shop which is generally the place you go to browse and buy spontaneously. I can't really go in there to search for a specific or new book because chances are it won't be there. Unfortunately the price of the books was too much to make me want to just buy a few to try out. Like I said, the shop is nice and your books are in good condition but they are still second-hand and as such I would have expected them to be a lot less. I frequent another second-hand English bookstore here in Munich which isn't quite in your league in terms of space and layout but at least I can pickup good bargins there.

Have been buying books from here a lot lately and totally impressed with the quality and price so far. It's my lifeline for good English books and probably one of my favourite places to go shopping.

The selection is great, all the books are in really good condition and such a nice atmoshpere for browsing. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't checked it out yet. I look forward to running out of reading material just so I can go back and see what new stuff they've got in. And no, they haven't paid me for this plug.

I liked the Munich Readery when I visited. Lots of stuff set up in a classy way. Plenty of chairs to sit in. Nice, friendly, spectacled man behind the counter who explained their buy back policy among other interesting things. I would go back soon but I have too many books at the moment to get through.
mische
I was just wondering if any American/International university level textbooks are to be found at this bookstore? If so, please let me know. Thanks!
bookmanjb
Sorry, Mische, I didn't get an email notification of your post and I haven't looked at this thread since the day before you posted. In any case, we do carry a very few textbooks, but only those that someone might want to read for pleasure. These would include mostly history and literature textbooks. I believe Wordsworth at Schellingstr. 3 carry textbooks. You can email me with specific requests at bookmanjb@readery.de or go to our website www.readery.de for more info about our shop.
UpQuark
Schweitzer at Lenbachplatz also have some English language textbooks and can order for you. They can only get their hands on new stuff, but they're cheaper than Amazon.co.uk and more likely to get what you want than Amazon.de.

If you wait a few weeks, bookmanjb may wind up with a couple of used investments and derivatives books, though I'm not sure that's the sort of thing that gets read for fun.

It is so nice to have a used book shop like this here in Munich. John and Lisa are both passionate about their books and it is nice to see a family making their living doing what they love. The Readery has a very nice ambiance with the jazzy music, comfy chairs, and relaxed atmosphere. Contrary to what another wrote on this post, I think the airy and un-cluttered environment is suitable and prefered here. I DO like used shops that have books stacked to the ceiling and under benches, etc...but one can NEVER find anything in a place like that unless you ask, and sometimes you don't want to have to ask. Found some great books recently and slowly working my way through them...
The only thing that would make it better would be a coffee/tea counter! cool.gif

We just got in more than 200 picture books and beginning reader books, including board books, Dr. Seuss, classics, and children's dictionaries, and more. These sell quite fast so get 'em while they're hot. And speaking of hot, we also have air-conditioning! So beat the heat: Feel free to bring along a beverage from one of the many nearby cafes, and browse the shelves or peruse a book in one of our comfy chairs.
