Snow clearing - early morning noise pollution

A rant about snow scrapers

What the hell is it with the bloody locals? I thought there was laws against making noise at stupid o'clock in the morning. 05:55 and the Hausmeister was scraping snow from the path. 06:15 and the git is now on his tractor effort, doing the car park.

Has anyone had any experience of wrapping a snow shovel around their Hausmeisters head? Will I get fined or will I be the local hero?

Rant over!

Man that's weird! You should tell him to do it some other time. I hate Hausmeisters! Haven't met a single one that's remotely nice.

I think it´s the name going to their head! Hausmeister! They seem to think that they really are the `master` of the house and therefor get up at unholy hours to keep everything in check! Germans! dry.gif
Iceberg Slim
Our 800 year old neighbour across the road was doing the same at 6:00. I wished him dead and on a sunday, so I suppose I'll spend some time in purgatory for it.

Lets face it...

you open your front door and see snow all over the place. Do you carry on as normal, or slow down a little bit?

It's a no brainer really.

We had the cleanest carpark in the village. Yipee. But the roads are still un-treated. sad.gif

The rules are the other way around for snow clearance. I think it only applies weekdays but you have to clean the area you are responsible for twice a day and the first one has to be done by 0730 or you are legally responsible for any accidents.

The scrape started at 7:12 at my inner city sanctum. But as I tripped off to the cafe, I was glad that the way was clear...efficiency has a price.
Friday
well this morning I was on my way to the Ubahn station at ten to five, and there was a couple clearing snow from in front of a building that I walked past.

Hey Scrooge, it's feckin' Christmas time, lighten up for Christ's sake. smile.gif

Don't really understand the animosity here... most areas require the snow to be clear from house steps and adjacent public footpaths by 6am in the week and 7am on Sundays. Whether owner or renter the Hausmeister is in your employ and performing your duties, thereby absolving you of your responsibilities. Like it or not that's the law, and this is Germany where you choose live and where the law applies. If someone on their way to church at 8am, passing your house fell on the snowy path and broke their neck, then you, along with your neighbours are legally liable...

So next time you hear the Hausmeister at 5am, get out of bed, open the window and hand him a cheery "thank you" for saving you having to get out of bed and do it yourself smile.gif

I'll tell you, At 04.25 this morning he got a "Cheery Fuck off!"

Do they have to have the reversing alarm on at that time in the morning?!

Bastards!

So others are having problems too!
I am currently trying to find out if anything can be done to STOP this early morning deluge of scraping.

Where I live (outside of Munich) the paths have to be clear by 07:00.

I understood there was a law against noise between 22:00 and 06:00.

Where I live is set back from any road and there is a small garden path outside my bedroom window.
The Hausmaister is now too old and infirm to do any manual work so the snow clearing has been subcontracted by the hausverwaltung to a roaming service.

In recent weeks they were often here scraping snow directly outside my bedroom window (about 3-4 metres from my sleeping head) between 03:00 and 03:30!!!
Today was 04:15.

But as the snow is then back on the path by 07:00 they return to do it again between 06:00 and 07:00.

Sorry Yorkielad, but that is ludicrous and not necessary, especially as they know it needs doing again at the 'proper' time and return then to do it!
Hutcho
The thing is, the scraping doesn't help either.

I would rather walk on fresh snow that the icey surface left behind after someone has scraped the top layer of grippy snow off the ground..
don_riina
They don't just scrape out here - they also like to use a soft brush to put a highly polished veneer on the surface of the ice, very similar to the crap they do in that bizzare curling "sport". I always understood that the path clearing outside of your house was because you could be in trouble if somebody slips on the snow you did not clear, not to try and guarantee that everybody will fall arse over tit. Utter madness.

Do you really think these hausmeister want to be outside scraping sidewalks at 5:00 in the morning? Germans by definition, are insane but this is pushing it a little bit.

Do taxi drivers wanna pick up drunken idiots at 3AM? Do I ever want to be in the office talking so some twat in a suit at 9AM? No.
grazzenger
as my brother in law noticed on sunday morning, when he wanted to shoot whichever neighbour it was at 5.30. 5 fricking 30. on a sunday bloody morning. CRETIN! it's still snowing, it'll make no odds. and i agree about the creation of surfaces you could curl on. as i'm on crutches at the moment, please just leave the thick, grippy snow alone, twats.

exactly. They're doing it because some law dictates they have to not because they get some sick satisfaction out of annoying the tennants.

I wasn't trying to imply that it doesn't happen but I find it hard to believe that anyone *wants* to get out of bed at 5:00 in the morning to shovel snow in the freezing cold for any reason other than they have no other choice.
Crawlie
Nope ER. I am sure some of them get that sick satisfaction you mentioned. Honestly, you can definitely hear them laughing to themselves whilst doing it.
arshoo
I was just thinking about the very same thing, I have these mini-dozers that come around cleaning the snow off, and its like a sci-fi movie I tell you, 5 am in the morning I hear this machine grinding noise, wake up to see strange yellow/orange flashes from outside me window, for a moment I do think its ET and I am being abducted dry.gif
and this isnt no hausmeister, its the city dept. , happens everyday in Schwabing mad.gif
grazzenger
hausmeister? city council? no, just our bleedin' neighbours get up that early on a sunday. nobs.
profundo
Throw out some salt/sand mixture, screw the enviornment today and vow to make it up by thinking good thoughts in the future and tipping well.

The Judge
When I first got to Munich, the parents told me that the previous Au Pair used to clear the snow for them!

I dont know if this is joke or they were hinting at me, but I dont really feel like shovelling a drive full of snow in -6 degree!

I thought most of the snow would have been gone by now? sad.gif
