...and Deeba

Deeba - I saw this restaurant today while I was going into town on the tram.

I've been to loads of Indian restaurants, but never a Pakistani one. Is anyone brave enough to give it a try, maybe in the new year?

Never been to this one, but went to a Pakistani food court stall in Asia once. I have read more books on cooking than any other subject, and I have never read anything to make me think that there was anything particularly interesting or unique in Pakistani cuisine. I'd be interested to know what you think if you go there.

Mate! That's it! That's the "indian" (well, how was I supposed to know?) that I was trying to describe to you and the Meringue that evening in the bar that shall not be named when the woman who shall not be named managed to chuck her drink over me.

When I went there, the waiter realised that we were Brits he asked us if we wanted the curries hotter than is normal here ("not me mate, I like my tastebuds in working order, ta muchly"). The place is always packed out - if you're going to go, book a table a week in advance.

It is my favourite restaurant in Munich!
Not only the food is excellent, also the waiters are extremely friendly.

TT curry night went about 2 weeks ago, we took over the whole place and everyone gave 2 thumbs up! It was great food (chicken melted in your mouth) and service was great- just a bit of beer left, and you we asked if you wanted another one.

Based on what I've been told (don't blame me), the Indian food that we have come to know in the west is actually closer to what is commonly eaten in most of Pakistan vs. what is commonly eaten in most of India.

Deeba's chicken is indeed super tender.

Why has this thread been resurrected after ~4 years?

cheap advertising? laugh.gif

Drivin west is spot on as a Londoner the curry haven is Brick Lane right near the famous Petticoat Lane and out of the tens of Curry vendors you would be hard pushed to find many Indian chefs.

I would like to start a campaign, like adopt an endangered spiecies, except it would be adopt a Pakistani master curry chef in Munich.
Topsy
brick lane is bangladeshi, though, so it can't come as a surprise, surely, that the chefs there are not indian?
Clive
Ouch no offence ment, you are quite right Bengali's are in the main I used to have a business just off Brick Lane and employed two Pakistani engineers who loved the local cuisine. I was really only saying how I missed the food and I bet a king prawn pathia to a Rogan Josh that the restaurant in Barer STR is more like the UK expectation how ever stange or unauthentic that might be.

I remember we had a curry night there. That also happened to be my first TT CN. We had Ravski bring some special hot chilli powder for trial competition . ohmy.gif
Topsy
no offence meant, or taken, either smile.gif
i was just pointing out that they are bangladeshi there smile.gif

anyroad, the division of the subcontinent into 3 countries is a relatively recent thing, so it's probably not accurate to say that the cuisine is one or the other. imho

and deeba is indeed a fantastic restaurant, possibly my fave curry house in munich

There is a new Pakastani restaurant just north of Kurfurstenplatz, on Belgradstr. It used to be an Indian, but now is Pakastani. Haven't been, haven't looked inside, no idea of the menu. But several people live near there and perhaps can swing by and give more info.

OK
Since I lived in Pakistan I think I may be able to add some intelligence here.
1. What we eat in UK and Germany is not Pakistani or Indian food it is a type of food that is cooked by people from the sub-continent to serve the local taste. That is why there is a difference between what you get here and in UK.

2. The cusine is based on a North Indian which also very similar to the food that you get in Pakistan (since they were the same place until 60 years ago)

3. The food that is eaten in Pakistan would be much hotter than we would be use to and would also be less sauce based e.g. a "Chicken Tikka Massala" would not exist as it is an english invention and is all sauce.

I am going to check it out on Friday, my hopes are high especially as I relayed this thread to a pakistani friend who runs a great restaurant in Hastings and he said my passion for Pathia's (King Prawn) is of Persian derivation and it's odd's against finding these dishes in Munich I do hope he is wrong.

This macho hotter the curry is the better, is pants, although I did have to go through the Phal thing as a typical young after pub curry go-er.

if you mean you are checking out Deeba on Friday, then enjoy smile.gif

The difference in Pakistani and Indian Food:

Well..not easy to explain...

What the whole world normally calls Indian food is basically North Indian Food.
But most of restaurants in Europre and run and managed by Sikhs from Punjab.
Punjab is not very famous for creative , excellent and excellent food !.

If you need to taste real food you got to be invited by a Pakistani or Indian family.

North India was unique mix of Hindu and Muslim culture and lived a Renaissance during Moghul Empire.

as Hindus normally do not eat Meat so the vegeratian dishes (Including Pulses = Dall) dishes were masrered by Hindus and Meat and rice dished were mastered by Muslim cooks or households.

After partition of Indian and Pakistan - Pkistani food took influence from Kashmiri food, and lot of variations of Meat, Beef or Chicken dishes were developed.

Indian food great for vegetable and pulses dishes and Pakistani food for Meet, Chicken and Rice (Biryanis).
