Does anybody know anything about hunting in Germany? Ducks, Geese?
Katrina
Hunting near Munich found using "advanced search".
eurovol
What is that German Warner Brothers?

Stuffering stuccotash.

It's cheaper if you forget using a gun, and go out and catch'em by hand.
Really.. I'm not making this up, bring a bag of bread with you..

If you really want to gun one down, be prepaired to spend well over 5k Eur and lots of time to take the many required classes, not to mention the price of the gun, and the other costs assoiated in having one in Germany..

You can get them pre-hunted at almost any supermarket, saves you trudging round in the forest in the cold.

Ummm... I'd suggest avoiding the Bavarian countryside. Round here, all the little Gasthauses proudly present their "Wild" (game) menus in the fall and winter with tasty deer, wild pigs, pheasants, geese and ducks shot by local and American hunters in the state forest located on the American military base. And they all have some cute, taxidermied animal in a place of honor. Or several.

Getting a hunting license seems to be even more expensive and time-consuming than getting a driver's license. A few members of the American military community teach these long courses for free or a nominal fee on American bases.

Hunters are cowards who have to prove themselves by killing something at a distinct disadvantage to themselves in order to feel superior!

Chortle chortle. Tee hee hee. Guffaw.

Nice try.

Anyone know when deer season is here in Germany? Is it possible to get a hunting license for only a few days (probably not since we are in Germany - the land of complicated regulations and shitloads of paperwork)? My father will be visiting several times this year and I've been going on and on about all the deer I see here, so he has it in his head that he wants to go hunting here. Problem is, no one in Mr. ajohnson's family hunts or knows anything about it. I'd love to take daddy hunting but don't know the regulations here. Any fellow hunters out there? Help me out...please.
NOFXmike
may the force be with you, ajohnson

I've met a few people with hunting licenses here...but I'm pretty certain for foreigners it'd be pretty much impossible.
eurovol
Not impossible at all, but you will need to go with a group of registered hunters.
YorkshireLad6
To go hunting in Germany you need a "Jagdschein" - a hunters permit. To get such a permit you need to attend a variety of training courses and pass verbal, written and practical examinations covering law, use of weapons, environment and animal "rights". This can take a couple of years. Once you have the Jagdschein you continue as a "Lehrling" for one year, where you can only hunt in the company of others, and must then take a final exam to get your individual right to hunt.

How long is Daddy here for ? smile.gif

You might consider tripping to an eastern land (e.g. Czech Republic) where the hunting restrictions are less onerous, and in some cases non-existent... You could always join a local group as a day-tripper, but in theory at least, you won't be allowed to touch a gun..

What, they don't allow every last idiot with a gun to go out and shoot anything that moves? ohmy.gif

Bloody communists.

Just like with fishing and driving, so it is with hunting. You get certain privileges for a short term. A person coming from the states with a valid hunting license can hunt with an organized group/club. This costs money, but is doable. It is not like hunting in the states and I wouldn't really waste my time trying to do it.

I would contact a local privately owned hunting area for further details on the where and why-fores. I think that would be your safest bet as they probably know all the ins and outs and could rent the rifles as well.
MadGolfer
Seems Strange,

We seem more worried about little furry animals, yet nobody seems to bother much about the American idiots who use them willy nilly every day.

Buy a pretend rifle, go to the Vikky-Markt and buy a couple "ready-dead" ducks or deer or something, pose for photos in the woods, hey presto "Instant Hunter" much cheaper. blink.gif

I hope all you dissidents are non-leather wearing vegans.

I'm not a fan of sport hunting, but if you eat what you kill and stay within the hunting regulations, I don't see the problem
Katrina
Contact the Landesjagdverband Bayern, but you are more likely to be able to accompany the shoot than actually shoot as only those with full licences can shoot and that is a lot of learning, cash and other things.
But frankly, it is a lot easier to go to Austria. Unlike in Germany, if you own the land, you can hunt on it. Hence, hunting tourism is quite popular but only in accompanied groups. You can't just go off shooting stuff (if that's what he wants go East), this is managed hunting and not target practice.
Landesjagdverband Österreich has a link to all of the federal organisations (it is a federal state issue, not a national one in Austria).

Thanks for the info, eurovol, YL6 and Katrina. I'll start looking around and see what I can pull together. May not be as difficult as I imagined.

@MadGolfer - I haven't shot a gun since Christmas; this "American idiot" may be in need of some target practice. Would you mind running around in the woods with antlers on your head? wink.gif

@sea-king - You certainly have no clue what you are talking about. So you may as well stay out of this.

@Small Town Boy - I can assure you that "this idiot" is adequately trained in handling a gun and is quite the marks(wo)man. If you care to join MadGolfer, I can show you. wink.gif

@ER - Thanks for the support, darling. You are spot on. I've never killed anything that I didn't eat (neither has my father). The hides are always cleaned and tanned. Waste not, want not.

To all of you out there, who don't like hunting for whatever reasons, please just stay out of the thread. I (we) didn't ask for opinions. I (we) asked for information about hunting in Germany. If you have anything informational or helpful to add, then I appreciate your input. Otherwise, fuck off. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. If you want to debate the rights/wrongs of hunting start your own discussion thread.

@ajohnson: I wasn't calling you or your dad an idiot, sorry if it sounded like that. It was more of a general comment about the different hunting regulations between America and Germany. In America, despite wearing bright flourescent vests, each year a handful of hunters are accidentally killed by their hunting partners. My point was that I don't think wildlife population control should be in the hands of people who can't tell the difference between a deer and a human. I'm sure, however, your dad is amply qualified, as is any German hunter who has spent two years learning basic safety precautions and how to kill an animal as humanely as possible.
ajohnson
@STB - Alrighty then. I retract my offer then wink.gif Sorry, I got a little caught up in all the anti-hunting (and anti-American) comments.
