So dear TTlers,
what are your suggestions for translating Bundeskanzlerin...Madam Chancellor, Chancelloress, Chancellorette? Leo's isn't helping any (yet) and its a pretty topical word-issue!
Cheers!

I second Topsy's suggestion. Just because German makes an unnecessary distinction doesn't mean that English has to.

Yep, same with "Präsidentin". => President

Obviously Chancellor, like what Topsy said. English doesn't do this crappy genderising of stuff

According to the Bild ( I only read the headlines on the way to work) she is now the most powerful woman in the world, and here`s me thinking it was Rice (that skinny black woman who thinks Bush is god). It`s a bit like the German habit of pronouncing their buildings, bridges, cars, authors and tv programmes to be the best in the world, although we all know they aren`t.

Kohl was referred to as Bundesbirne as in Federal Pear (in various publications). I prefer to call Merkel "Bundeskanzlerin auf Abruf" myself, stressing her in all likelihood temporary status. What bugs me more is the way some English speakers call her Murkel - respect the language, please.

You think "Murkel" is bad? To me, her name is only a hop away from "Merkin", so I'd be happy with the slaughtered pronunciation if I were her.
