Back in the mid 90's the cigarette companies were getting quite a bit of flack at aiming cigarette ads at under 16's. The cigarette companies must have some sort of organisation that represents their interests. Anyway this organisation comissioned an ad that was supposed to show that the cigarette industry was not encouraging kids to smoke. It was a billboard campaign throughout Berlin. Not sure if it was down here as well
Anyway the add was a picture of a youngish looking lad (probably about 14) with a baseball cap and a cool pose. The caption was "Was heisst ich darf noch nicht rauchen? Ich will noch nicht rauchen" (my emphasis). The cigarette industry quite rightly got some crap for that ad.
Just in case non German speakers are reading. Rough translation:
What do you mean I'm not allowed to smoke yet? I don't want to smoke yet.
Never seen that but it sounds rather devilish. I think I mentioned it somewhere above but the ads the cigarette industry places are genius.
This one is a good example as you can basically read all into it that you want, you placing the emphasis differently as the cigarette industry would probably try make you believe it was intended.
I still don't see how cigarettes are marketed at kids here in Germany. Umm..Joe Camel never appeared in our ads as far as I know.
The machines should go, but I already said that. I feel a bit like the devil's advocat here which is weird as I don't even smoke and don't like smoke.
I just don't like the whole rhetoric about socially unacceptable behavior and so on. If something is socially unacceptable it is usually forbidden. Smoking isn't.
I agree that there should be a stronger move for more smoke-free places. Or make smoking illegal.
