anyone know of a completely non-smoking hospital in Munich? Geeez!

The one at Nussbaumstr. isn't one of them, that's for sure. I'll spare you the gory details; I'll just say that the staff had their coffee (read: cigarette) breaks in a room practically in the middle of the ward.

all these cigarette-vending machines practically at every street corner. (They're also a real eyesore, but that's another story.)

An eyesore they may be, but they are aesthetically streets ahead of massive huge stupid recycling bins that are everywhere. Bloody recycling.

The Schwabinger Cardio/Pulminary ward is even better: Private smoking room next to the shower for all the guys and gals dying of cardio-vascular-pulminary diseases what can't climb the stairs any more. And all the docs and nurses on the ward smoke.

@Tim: I'd really like to see an example for tobacco being marketed to kids. Alcohol might be but cigarettes really are not marketed to that target group.

Back in the mid 90's the cigarette companies were getting quite a bit of flack at aiming cigarette ads at under 16's. The cigarette companies must have some sort of organisation that represents their interests. Anyway this organisation comissioned an ad that was supposed to show that the cigarette industry was not encouraging kids to smoke. It was a billboard campaign throughout Berlin. Not sure if it was down here as well

Anyway the add was a picture of a youngish looking lad (probably about 14) with a baseball cap and a cool pose. The caption was "Was heisst ich darf noch nicht rauchen? Ich will noch nicht rauchen" (my emphasis). The cigarette industry quite rightly got some crap for that ad.

Just in case non German speakers are reading. Rough translation:
What do you mean I'm not allowed to smoke yet? I don't want to smoke yet.

There are plenty of cigarette machines that have children's candy machines installed next to them. Also machines which are very much lowered to the ground, with no visible architectural reason for doing so (such as a inconvenient ledge).

Really? Never seen that. I once saw one machine that was very high up on the wall.

I remembered this while out with one of my kids yesterday. I didn't inspect the height of every vending machine in town, only those we came across between our house and the U-Bahn station. My daughter had no problem reaching the top slot on any of them - the only problem is that she's an average-sized 9-year old...

Never seen that but it sounds rather devilish. I think I mentioned it somewhere above but the ads the cigarette industry places are genius.
This one is a good example as you can basically read all into it that you want, you placing the emphasis differently as the cigarette industry would probably try make you believe it was intended.

I still don't see how cigarettes are marketed at kids here in Germany. Umm..Joe Camel never appeared in our ads as far as I know.
The machines should go, but I already said that. I feel a bit like the devil's advocat here which is weird as I don't even smoke and don't like smoke.
I just don't like the whole rhetoric about socially unacceptable behavior and so on. If something is socially unacceptable it is usually forbidden. Smoking isn't.
I agree that there should be a stronger move for more smoke-free places. Or make smoking illegal.

I could recommend going to Prinz Myshkin. It is close to Marienplatz, has a nice interior, clean air - it even has a complete separate section for smokers next to the non-smoking section, serves good affordable food and has very friendly waiters. This is my favourite non-smoking cafe/restaurant in Munich. I don't like Cafe Ignaz. It is a bit too eco-orientated for my liking.

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a pissing section in a swimming pool mad.gif
Kza
Not quite, you notice when people smoke in a restaurant, but i have never been caught taking a sly leak in the pool. If people dont notice it, its obviously not hurting them is it.

Does raise a good question as to why theres no pissing sections in swimming pools though.

More like a "dumping section", then. It's a bit more obvious if you have to brush floaters out of your face while swimming back and forth.

Still, at least your clothes wouldn't stink afterwards.

The smoking section is a completely different room, closed off from the main room., far away from it, I am very fussy about smoke, you smell nothing coming from that direction. You can walk out and still smell fresh. smile.gif I happen to be there again last night.

@majorbummer

sorry I meant in general not specifically that rastaurant, what really bugs me is when the smoking
and non-smoking sections are not physically separate ...a complete waist of time.

I think it will be a long long time before we see this in Germany
