Getting a car loan in Germany as a freelancer

Banks that take the car as security

Hi Folks,

I was to get a car loan for a fairly expensive car. My Irish bank tells me they won't loan me the cash 'cos the car will not registered in Ireland (but they would have taken the car as security if it were in Ireland) and the Dresdner Bank tells me they won't take the car as security as I might not park it outside my house so they would have trouble recovering it if I default on the loan.

Question: Anyone know of a bank or credit institute where they take the car as security. I have been a freelancer (IT contractor) for about 8 months so they are not thrilled about me as a client anyway.

Leasing is not an option 'cos I want to sell it in 18 months or so.

Cheers,

John

Should be buying for hard cold cash then!

Sorry, I cannot recommend any loan places here. Have you tried ringing some of the banks directly?

Leasing is an option as you can take a leasing for 18months. I have done the same. Than you return the car afterwards. I am also freelancer only in the Telecom business. PM me if you need more info and how to set it all up.

I tried these guys. They didn't like the freelancer thing. Also tried Royal Bank of Scottland and Dresdner Bank. Again, the freelancer thing.

It will be a right hand drive so they won't want it back. The plan is to import it as a private car back to Ireland and if I need to I can sell it when I move back. That is why it has to be an expensive model (and why I need to borrow). Tax on cars in Ireland is much higher than in Germany so the same car costs much more there and therefor has a higher second hand value. You are allowed import a car privately every 10 years without paying import tax and I want to lever this when I move back. On that note, I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had experience importing a fairly new luxury car into Ireland over the past few years.

Also, if any recent freelancers (Existenzgründer as they so poetically refer to me at Dresdner) have had good experiences I would like to hear. It would narrow down my search. Recent in this case is just over 6 months.

Cheers,

John
