Presh and I were just discussing about going to Salzburg for a day trip on Saturday, April 3rd.
I guess we'd go there by train from Munich. We could do the Wochenendticket, which is 28€ for the whole day up to 5 ppl.
Who wants to join us to the town of Mozart and Sound of Music? cool.gif
We would take the train from Hauptbahnhof at 8:48 (arrival Salzburg 10:41) and will probably take the train back at 21:22 (arrival in M 23:16).
Meet up at platform around 08:30h.
So, who is up for it?
Katrina
Not me as Herr Indoors comes from Bad Reichenhall, i.e. 4km away from Salzburg but on the German side of the border, so we are there a lot. If you want some tips on what to see and do just let me know.
Katrina
Presh
Could you post a couple of ideas for us? Cheers!! biggrin.gif
MysteryMan
Go to Königsee / Berchtesgaden. Salzburg is overrated.
Keydeck
Oooh, that's a good idea MM.

Here's some photos of both.

Königsee is very beautiful, for Berchtesgarden and Berchtesgardener Land the regional homepage is not a bad place to start. Click at the top of the page for the English site.
The salt mine experience is pretty cool - you can learn all about Bad Reichenhaller Salt and how salt comes from the mountains as well as out of the sea.
Back in a sec, I've just seen something v. important...
Katrina
Katrina
Salzwelt - the Bad Reichenhall salt experience
You could also look up some salt spas (I personally like the Watzmann spa).
Tourist info for Königsee.
If you click on the wonderfully-named "Healthiness & Sports" you'll find information about Visitor's Bodsledding, yes you can go down the World Championship Bob Run (for 30€). The lake ferry is spectacular.
Also worth seeing off-peak is Obersalzberg. This was Hitler's summer holiday retreat and it is extremely interesting.

Mind's Eye
I'll bite if there are any openings left -- I've been planning on doing some day trips in that direction soon so I'm definitely interested..
Showem
Salzburg overrated? I have to disagree. Salzburg is a beautiful little place with lots going for it. The fortress is impressive, there are several nice gardens and palaces and there's that guy Mozart who inspired a chocolate ball to be named after him. If you know Sound of Music, the tour is good fun, in a very kitschy way. Still, informative and worth the money. For a day trip, Salzburg is about perfect. It's certainly more accessible by train than Berchtesgardner Land.
bubblylady
Königssee and Berchtesgardener Land definitely is very beautiful.
But so is Salzburg. and as in April it still could be very cold and nasty weather, I'd suggest we do Königssee etc sometime in May, just before High seasons starts.
So, who wants to go to Salzburg and any suggestions what we could do there?
I know there is loads of stuff and I'd like to see the fortress as well(and its gardens with the water games :cool.gif) , but we are always open for ideas.
Katrina
Erm Showem, to get to Salzburg on the cheap you usually have to change at Freilassing which is the same as for Berechtesgarden.
Not much difference in the travel time and there is a quick direct bus link to the bob route and Königsee from in front of the station. Saltmine is within walking distance of the station.
I certainly don't find Salzburg to be overrated, the shopping is *fabulous*.
The cathedral is worth seeing too (try and see the cellars) and it is worth walking up to the peak for a great view.
Salzburg is a good day trip place, I just use every opportunity to promote BGL because I love it there so much and find it overlooked.
But if you go to Salzburg, buy some Kürbiskernöl (pumpkin seed oil) - it is far cheaper in Austria and totally delicious.
*Special Salzburg Tip*:
Look out for the Bosna - this is a speciality grilled sausage which you can only get around Salzburg. Has lots of onions, Balkan spices and mustard, wrapped in a thin bread roll and is a must eat. The best ones are in the little alley walkthrough near the Mozart house and it is called 1. Bosna. It looks like they are being handed out through a cupboard by an older lady but she makes the best Bosna in Salzburg. Herr Indoors eats 2 if not 3 everytime we go, it can't be helped...
Katrina smile.gif
Keydeck
Definitely go for a beer in the Augustiner there. It's well cool!
Katrina
You can get a Bosna in there as well...that Biergarten is very nice in summer btw.
NOTE: it is not the same Augustiner as in Munich as the Salzburg beer is brewed locally.
Keydeck
True, but for the most part, one wouldn't notice any difference. The beer is damn fine and the place itself is cool.

Have a look at the site for more details.

I have to disagree. I have been there a few times: take away the Mozart and Sound of music associations and the associated tourists and you have a nice little place with a couple of things going for it. There are a few nice gardens and buildings and a fortress, but not more than an average well preserved city of similar size in Germany or Austria. My opinion. If I was in the area for one day, I would definitely head to Berchtesgaden instead.
MysteryMan
Ahhhhhhhh yes! I finally remember who you remind me of Katrina:

pepper
The weather is still not really right for visiting the lakes, but remember that Chiemsee was also really nice. With the two islands.
Presh
So anyone else coming along? It´ll be relatively cheap I´m sure, with that ticket thing.
pepper
When the weather improves, we should organise a day trip to Chiemsee. Have the two islands, its actually a really nice day out !
bubblylady
so, guess it's time to bring it up again:
who wants to join us? cool.gif
SparkaHck
I'm in!
amimeli
You can actually get a Bayern Ticket for 22 Euros. It is cheaper than the Schoenes Wochenende Ticket that you are talking about and you can still bring up to 5 people.

I always thought that you could only get the Bayern Ticket on weekdays. Either I was mistaken or they have changed their policy. But it's definitely a great deal!!

I got this ticket for my dad, Ken and I when we went to Salzburg last Sunday. My dad and Ken went there for the first time and they really liked it.

Have fun!
Melissa
SparkaHck
Anyone interested in hearing some Mozart?

http://www.mozartfestival.at
tench
@amimeli: Does the Bayer ticket allow you to return on a different day? (Heading down there for the weekend)
bubblylady
Hey Tom, I'd be definitely in. The schedule says they play "eine kleine Nachtmusik". It also would be alright with the journey back. Are you serious and wanna get tix?

Tench, both tickets are only valid on one day. be careful what train ur using as the bayern or weekendticket are both valid on some trains only.
You can't cheat on us and go there a week earlier anyway wink.gif
Presh
Ok come on people! Anyone new to TT who would like to join in on this trip? A great way to check out a new place cheaply!
mothbola
Was seriously considering this. Thought it would be a good opp to get to meet some of you guys - However, my boss has announced that I have to work this Saturday mad.gif
Hopefully, I should be free if another trip is organised.
Presh
Bugger, next time then hey? Apparently, there´s a fun fort to look at and some nice hlls to climb.. lots of chocolate to be bought... Mozart stuff... I´m hoping to do some touristy (non-expensive) stuff when we get there and then in the late afternoon head to a restaurant or pub and have a few drinks and chill out. Then maybe get some drinks for the train ride home and go out in Munich afterwards.
amimeli
Hi all,
Just thought I'd suggest something that you may not know...
Friday, April 9th is a holiday in Germany. But it is NOT A HOLIDAY in Austria. So if you were to go on "Karfreitag" (April 9th) then all the stores and everything will be open in Salzburg.
My suggestion is that you think about switching the date of the trip.
But you can ignore my suggestion if you want, since I am not going on the trip.
Just trying to be helpful...
Have fun no matter when you go!
Melissa
Presh
Thanks Animeli... umm I´ll be in Spain so I´m assuming that everyone else still wants to go this Sat? Anyone else want to come along?? The weather will be beautiful I hear.. who wants to sit around the city, doing chores or recovering from a hard night when you could be travelling to Salzburg with a bunch of cool people (yes thats right we´re really cool) and having fun exploring Austria!! Come one, come all!
bubblylady
so, in that case we are 6 ppl.

Presh

Presh
So thats 2xBayern Tix @€22x2=44. 44/6 = €7.3 per person. All in all a cheap day I think!! Surely some more ppl want to come along?
SparkaHck
Yeah, I'm still in.

Off to Thailand on the 6th, so this is my last weekend in Munich until the 21st.

Woot.

PM me if you want to do the Mozart.
Mind's Eye
I'm still in too. There are Echte Salzburger Mozartskugeln with my name on them... *woo-hoo!*

Incidentally, is Salzburg really the place to buy the original Mozarzkugeln? I know they can be expensive and are probably priced for tourists there, but are there also more intelligent places to buy them?
Presh
What do you mean SparkaHck? What Mozart thing? I looked at the link???
We are considering moving the meeting time to around 9.30 am... would this convince any others to come along?
chicken^tonight
Yeah. I'm in.

Sounds nice and touristy! and cheap cool.gif
KoRnFlaKe
Yeah count me in. It will be a good opportunity to meet some more of the TT gang including a couple of fellow Aussies!
Presh
We shall now call this the AUSSIE SALZBURG trip... just joking.. any other nationality is more than welcome to join!!
DrivinWest
Hey, I'm beginning to reconsider. I had a busy Saturday planned but now I'm tempted to blow it all off and go to Saltcity.
Presh
Carn West... do it! It will be heaps of fun and we have a 2 hr train trip in which you can sleep off the hangover... mountain air will do you good!
DrivinWest
carns?? heaps?? is this Aussie lingo which I'm going to be subjected to!? tongue.gif

Upon second thought (and looking at the weather forcast), I think I'm going to skip. This evening should do me in pretty good and I've got a reservation with MDC tomorrow night.

But having looked at picstures and stuff, I'm really intrigued. Anyone up for a few days over Easter weekend??
SparkaHck
Can we move the meeting time to 9:30? Is that OK w.everyone?

Will try not to acquire a hangover tonight, but would be good to have that option.
bubblylady
The next train would be at 09:42h, meet up would be 9:30h sharp at the platform 9 (Holzkirchner Bf, platform left of the mainhall in Hbf)
Personally we don't mind switching it to a later time.
Anyone who wants the later train as well?

Who else will be in? At the moment it looks like we need two Bayern/SchönesWochenendticket.
There will be no drinks etc on the train so make sure you get the coffee to go beforehand biggrin.gif

We will take it easy, so no exhausting sightseeing day where we just run through town like mad japanese tourists (hopefully nobody feels offended, just kidding).
It'll be just a day doing something else and relax in a different environment.
Of course we can do the Heavy sightseeing as well, if you wish... smile.gif

I got some information about Salzburg in German (like sights, history) as word.doc. If anybody is interested, just send me an Email and I'll send it you.

Don't forget your cameras and passports! The likelyhood that we get checked is pretty low, but you never know.
If you want my phone no just pm me.
Kza
I might jump on the train at Rosenheim and join everyone, but depends if a prior arranged thing tomorrow goes ahead or not.

Sux waiting till the last minute for other people to clear up their plans...
Presh
Ok I think that we should catch the 9.42am train.. just in case we are a bit slow moving.. but we HAVE to meet on time...So try and get there at like 9.20am?? Does anyone have objections to meeting at this time? If so, speak now or forever hold your peace...
Presh
Okay, this is the official Post Salzburg Plan!!

Where: Loggia Lounge, Falkenturmstr 6, near odeonsplz
When: 9,30pm... or whatever time we get there.

There is a table reserved under REBECCA.

No worries mate, Kevin Bloody Wilson has a dictionary of this bizarre dialect online.

The site actually has some rather entertaining bits on it. Best bits are the jokes and his Someone else's Sheila photo album. laugh.gif (Australian women prefer to be called Sheilas too by the way)

And yes I am having such a slow boring day at work today... blink.gif

München Hbf Gl.5-10 ab 09:42 platform 9 RB 31011

9:30 sounds better than earlier, since I'm not a big fan of early mornings anyway.

So will you be carrying a flag for us to follow? tongue.gif
Brummie
hi, only just noticed this - been skiving from work. I'd like to turn up too.
are we gonna sort out tickets when we kow how many people are there?
