Today (Thursday 17.Nov.2005) is
Beaujolais Day. This is the first day that the 2005 vintage of
Beaujolais Nouveau is officially on sale. At midnight this morning the race began to ship bottles all over the world from France. So if you're out at one of the
French restaurants tonight or this weekend, this is what you should be drinking.
Les Cuisiniers are hosting a big Nouveau celebration on Saturday evening. It is at the Peugeot dealers on Landsbergerstrasse from 7pm. The party includes a buffet and live music - see
Munich French Connection for details.

Various French cafés and wine merchants in Munich usually hold tasting events on Beaujolais Day. There should be a few going on this evening. If you know the details of any such events, please post the info here!

You're welcome.
It's been
mentioned before on TT, but no harm mentioning it again:
munich-french-connection.net/forums - the same as TT but French rather than English (and not as good, obviously).

Lots of folk from our office are members, if you can get a hold of it, their guide to Munich including French products and services is excellent.

I really should not go to that forum. Reading French just gets me all frisky.
Anyway, back to the old vin. My old man used to bring home bottles of Beaujolais every single year - its a weird thing to get all excited about really I think, but nevermind.
I'm off on a mission to find the impossible - a bottle of Beauj in Garching. I do not rate my chances highly. Just might go and read more french words first. This is great.

Whenever I've drunk it, though, it's just tasted like vinegar... is it really that special?
Mind, I haven't drunk it for a few years now, so maybe my tastebuds have developed in the meantime.

No Topsy, it is grim stuff. Bleugh.
So why does this particular wine deserve its own special day?

Just an excuse to get caned, although most peeps around here don't need much of a reason methinks. Used to do this years ago when I worked in the City and it just tasted like £1 a bottle french campsite vino collapso - but then I am an ignoramus on wine/beer/food etc.

Jaques' Wein Depots are also celebrating this today. So if you can find one, pop in for a free drinky. Think I might nip (and it is indeed chopping freezing today) along the road here in Freising for a couple of lunchtime cheekies before a siesta!

@ kza - in my opinion, that´s just a very smart merchandizing and it works.

True!
It is the only way to sell the crap wine!
The only good thing about the tasting events is usually the cheese

I assume it's not overly big here in Munich, but a French friend of mine tells me Beaujolais Nouveau has Oktoberfest status in France, except that it's nationwide and not just a local event like the Wiesn. You know the French and their wine...serious business, so this occasion is apparently massive (and thoroughly celebrated) down there.

Ha I have a bottle already, from Minimal, Neu-Perlach. I shall let it breathe for an hour or so and then spank it, Ohh the joy of being off sick. Shall report later if it tastes any good.

you mean marketing. beuj nou is a laugh, an excuse to get slaughtered on cheap young wine. i was always told by the M&S wine bods that this wine is excellent with curries and spicy food. and buy it now and lay it down for xmas when apparently its at its most drinkable. i did manage to do that one year. although usualy a bottle of red wine has as much chance of surviving a week ok in my house as a nubile virgin lass has on Toytown.

There's a wine merchant on Blutenstr. for anybody interested in fine wines - their sign claims that they'll get you single bottles if you're so inclined - can't imagine they're cheap though.

When I lived there I went to the Beaujolais festival. It really is very big. We had a tour of the vineyard and cave and then onwards for some food and of course plenty of wine! Then bus back to Lyon after the fireworks and live music. Lots of fun...

So I`ve started on the Beauj and it isn`t too bad should eat something with it though, a bit on the dry side and the tannic acid is getting the overhand, smells abit like blackberry and vanilla, to me anyway. But for the very high price of €1.29 what do you expect. Should I drink and take anti-biotics and painkillers? Don`t care doing it anyway.

Was told yesterday, that this year's Beaujolais Nouveau is the best that it's been since the late 1950s or so.

Beaujolais Nouveau is still crap wine. They have to hype it with a huge media campaign, otherwise people would never buy it. Yuck. I'm with those who call it a joke.

Better on chips.
In the 80s when I heard of this "Bewjolais" showy offy wine thing I tried it. Yup vinegar.
