this is a great evening from what i can remember last year. i think we left at about two but rumour had it that it continued to around 5ish. great laugh with the scandis in full-on party mode, a sight to behold!

can't wait for this year's event!!
stressman
People, this is probably the ever-best x-mas party in Munich! I was there last year and it really lifted the whole roof on cafe Reitschule!! Over 300 people - dressed in coctail dress and tux gave the evening a glamoriuos touch!! In case you have not hear about it - this is the coolest Scandinavian event and if you have the chance to join - don't wait to long to sign up.

See you! smile.gif java script:emoticon(':)', 'smid_3')

@boomtown_rat:
it would be great to have you coming to the party! I guess it was just a swedish way of trying to make a joke...!
Absolutely no offence meant by that at all (oops, have just been reading the racist vs offence thread, so trying to choose my words very carefully ;-))

@Twirlie:
no, not really - but since not many of you TTers were there last year, what is wrong with having former guests stating their opinion?!?
Iceberg Slim
Don't mind the brits, they've never forgiven you all for invading in the 5th century. They tend to be both surly AND carry a grudge.
grazzenger
don't mind twirlie, he's a being a simple-minded twat with nothing positive to contribute (so this post should do just the same)

Yeah, sorry 'bout that, but Iceland is Scandinavian.

Icelandic has pretty much pushed Norwegian straight outta my noggin. I can still read NOR/SWE but I can't speak/write either one. I might make it to the party.

woof.

but Iceland is Scandinavian.

No, Iceland is a part of the Nordic countries ("Norden" in Swedish), as is Finland.

Only Denmark, Norway and Sweden make up Scandinavia.

It could be that Icelandic is considered a Scandinavian language, perhaps that's what you mean.
Allershausen
I've heard this often, what determines the term Scandinavian then!
boomtown_rat
something belonging to or originating in Scandinavia I should imagine (Scandinavia being determined by geography)
The Walrus
They all belong to the North Germanic family of languages except Finnish of course. Danish and Swedish are considered East Scandinavian whilst Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese are considered West Scandinavian. Scandinavian, however, is a geographical concept explained by ET and BT.
carpediem
Scandinavia (as described by Wikipedia):

Scandinavia is the cultural and historic region of the Scandinavian Peninsula and some surrounding areas. The Scandinavian countries are in present day understood as Norway, Sweden and includes Denmark even though it does not actually reside on the Scandinavian Peninsula.
The bulk of the Finnish population is not ethnically related to the Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian populations, who all share a common ethnic and linguistic connection to one another.

The usage and meaning of the term 'Scandinavia' is somewhat ambiguous though:
Finland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland are still sometimes counted as parts of Scandinavia, as they share strong social and historical ties to Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
In a British mindset, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are usually included, often with the addition of Iceland, Finland, and sometimes even Greenland.

The term the Nordic countries is used unambiguously for the Scandinavian kingdoms of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the republics of Finland and Iceland.

Conclusion:so, that is why our association is called "FROM NORTH" and not Scandinavia... but at the party, the buffet consists mostly of scandinavian dishes, hence the wording smile.gif

Det ville jag också fråga.
Gäller en finsk som skandinavisk?

Tack ska du ha!
Your answer overlapped my question.
boomtown_rat
it all seems a bit random according to wiki (english version, swedish version says much the same). Accepted usage appears to be Sv, Dk and N

ok, carpe var snabbare
UrbanAngel
Weird, I know someone from Finland who says it's in Scandanavia.
carpediem
A person from Finland with Swedish as his/her mother tongue, probably would consider him/herself as Scandinavian! Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish, the latter mostly being spoken in the southwest of Finland...

Yes, Wikipedia is a bit vague about it, but the whole thing is a bit vague, in my opinion... Scandinavia consists of the countries that belong to the scandinavian language group as far as I am concerned...
The Walrus
Every Finn I know has told me they are not part of Scandinavia and that happens to be what my Time Life book on Scandinavia said too.
Allershausen
It's weird 'cos part of Norway is actually north and looks almost as if goes east of Finland, yet Finland isn't on the Scandinavian Peninsula?
Still I never was very good at Geography. smile.gif
boomtown_rat
some Scots also like to think they belong to Scandinavia instead of Britain laugh.gif

Finland used to be a lot larger. Large parts of it were lost to Russia in the 2nd World War.

well that can't be right the Scandinavians are nice people! laugh.gif

not sure of what the Scandinavian Peninsula is myself, to be honest, so went on Wikipedia again:

"The Scandinavian Peninsula is a peninsula located at the northwest corner of Europe and encloses the Baltic Sea. It extends from Russia and Finland in the north and almost reaches Denmark in the south. It contains the countries Norway on the west, Sweden on the east and parts of Finland on the northeast. The Scandinavian mountain range separates the three countries."

learning a bit too much new stuff for one day... laugh.gif
Jeeves
Even that geographic definition from Wikipedia is a little vague methinks
Ulysses
How would Denmark then be part of Scandinavia according to the peninsular theory?

that seems to be the prob with wiki's description, which I think wiki kind of gets around by saying something about cultural values... blink.gif

I'll go with that definition for now. Meaning that Iceland and the Faroes make it into the club but only bits of Finland.

I just thought of an easy solution for definitions of Scandinavia, Nordic, Scandi-Peninsula, Danes, Finns etc -
come along to the party and see for yourself what we all look like and how we act! blink.gif
"Warning" must be mentioned --> I´ve heard frenchies, brits, aussies, italians and other EU-nationalities will be coming as well biggrin.gif
Ulysses
And a South African! Aterminstone tala jag en lite svenska. Jag vill hörer i alla fall gyllene Tider!

Scandinavia means different things politically, geographically and geologically. Politically, it is Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Geographically, it is Norway, Sweden and part of Finland. Geologically, and also known here as fennoscandia, it is the latter plus the whole of Finland. Linguistically, they are the north Germanic branch of the Indo-European family of languages except for Finnish which belongs to Finno-Ugric along with Estonian and Hungarian. They are then further sub-divided into East and West Scandinavian languages as explained earlier. It can't get clearer than that, mind you everything is fairly dark up there...
carpediem
@Ulysses - oh, sorry, so South African as well! Brilliant!

thanks for your clear definition... now my head is really spinning huh.gif

might be dark up there right now, but summertime it couldn´t be brighter!
Ulysses
I know, I was there this and last summer. It never bloody gets dark! But it did get a little foggy after the first bottle of Absolut...
carpediem
@Ulysses: ABSOLUT will surely be available at the bar on the 26th! Will you be able to come?

I´d recommend a drink we in Sweden call "vargtass" (= fox paw): absolut curant with cranberry juice - hmm biggrin.gif
grazzenger
weather forecast is for real snow (see other thread) during this event, so it should be all bing crosby 'n' that.
