Hi leute,

It's now a year since I've moved from Frankfurt (ffm) and I must say I'm pretty disappointed with the club scene. Frankfurt was smaller but when it came to clubbing it defo has the mix on Munich. There seems to be a separation of the scene here - rich, poor, ethnic, gay and last but not least Students...

I'm a fan of mixing it - not literally!!! Where all types come together for banging musik and lots of dancing...so am pretty disappointed after venturing to Geheim Gessellschaft on Saturday only to be met by Munich's rich kids - 17 to 21 year olds*. Has any one told them that putting your collar up on your Skool/Rugby shirt is NOT cool**. And even worse is when they start buying champagne and grasping the bottle like plastic gangster...What A Picture...

The scene here seems either too wannabe underground/studentie or overground hooray henrys...

My girlfriend and I are quickly loosing hope...and may plan a trip back to ffm to get a good nites dancing in...

Best nites in Munich to-date have been:

Best:
David Morales @ Park Cafe
Roger Sanchez @ 8 Saison
The Gay nite once a month at Park Cafe.

Not Bad:
Eric Pridz @ Garden Club

Regards

Did I miss something or is there something wrong with 40 year old men looking for young" totty " ?

It's a bit SAD and doesn't make for a pleasant site...the salvating mouths - the insecurity - even though their victims are half their age...

The dress sense...need I say more.

Sounds more like what I was doing when I was 18. How times haven't changed.

Hi stanford

I reckon I know the kind of places u are after
This weekend you could check out

Coke Dj culture @ Zerwirk on Thursday
The laptop battle @ Harry Klein on saturday
Yum Yum @ Registrateur on Friday night
Naughty (gigolo recs) @ Garden on saturday
Suzuki Bar @ Zerwirk on friday
Prinzip on friday or saturday

There's a new club called rote sonne at lenbach which might also be worth a go on friday night.

Any of these should have great underground music and a nice over 25 mixed crowd with no schicki twats in sight. Good luck!

... and don't forget our darling dj hell on his monthly event @ ampere [first thurs of every month] definitely a mixed bag of 'publikum' there... although rarely a turned up collar or monkey-fisted bottle of brut

p.s. there is no equivalent to cocoon club here though... or u60 for afterhours for that matter sad.gif [probably for the best... all gotta grow up sometime cool.gif ]

The best clubs that I have found are not on the A-list of places to go. They are tucked away in the shadows and that way they stay off the radar. The best one that I have found is one that you will never find because you are looking in all the wrong places.

are you always this helpful? biggrin.gif

Some secrets are best kept secret. Wouldn't want a bunch of TTers messing up a good thing. wink.gif

i am quite dissapointed with Munich's club scene. We were asked to meet a German friend at a club, I sure cannot pronounce the name.. which I later found out it literally translates to 'CLOSED SOCIETY'. I had to walk out that stupid place. Everyone that was at the club was dressed alike, similar hairstyles, they are the regulars, and most of them are quite happy to be in a hole called closed society. I will never go back to that place. I will get the name in German and post it a tomorrow.
UrbanAngel
Geschlossene Gesellschaft, I take it.

I don't know this club, but if a venue is closed for a private party, then this is what's written on the sign. It could have been so in your case (?).

That's what I was thinking too UA. Had a quiet chuckle to myself at that post.

I must say that I am happy with the club scene in Munich. I have had some of the best and interesting clubbing experiences here and I look forward to the next one. I go to most, if not all, the Worldleague parties, Electric Delicate parties and others and have my regular joints where I can do/take what I want, know I won't be hassled for it and just enjoy the dancing. At times some of the Munich rich brats get annoying but most of the time I laugh my ass off at them.
In the end it depends what you go to clubs for... I go for the music, the dancing, the drugs, the women, the sex and oh yes, the conversation that fits in there somehow tongue.gif There are good clubs that have good nights depending on the time of month and the day of the week. Sometimes you need to take a chance and you come across a good night/venue and if it sucks then move onto the next one. There always is another one.
I also think it depends who you go with, how big your crowd is and what kind of mood they are in. A good party group can turn a club around. I have a group of friends coming to Munich for a party weekend and we'll be going balls to the wall to Westbam on the 26th at the new Schrannenhalle.

Funny that you praise Frankfurt over Munich. We just had a visitor over the weekend from Frankfurt who was saying Munich seemed to have more variety for places to go out than Frankfurt. Admittedly, he was refering to bars and clubs, not just clubs, but after 3 visits here, he more or less has the exact opposite opinion as you do Stanford. Not saying anything one way or the other, but it goes to show you how opinions can differ.

I’ve read the comments with interests

It is granted that we are new in Munich, older (thirty something now) and a couple so that makes the whole dynamics of the clubbing-thang different: especially from my horny-single-guy-days. But still I've been out to many places in Munich so I'm not talking without trying.

As for ffm, in general it's crap but there use to be one or two underground gems of a nite that were pretty full-on:

Good/Excellent:
- Friday nite at the old Monza - Superb underground house musik and polysexual crowd mad to dance.
- Lofthouse - three floors of mixed music - techno/house/R&B
- Studio del Mar - happy house for your house slaves and Sunday nite party animals
- Cookies - after Studio del mar for those that don't want to stop.

Not bad:
190East - bar/club - pretty girls and banging US Garage

but they have all moved on now and I think the scene has changed. Ffm has a lousy bar scene but since I don’t like drinking without dancing this didn’t bother me.

In general, from my musical tastes (veteran of the Ministry of Sound and Hacienda) - I find that the house musik here is either too esoteric or plain cheesey: DJ who can’t mix to save their lives and little crowd dynamics (not Harry Klein though). Okay Prinzip and Palais are real house clubs but they are more like afterhours - too small, dark and dingy. I'd rather glam things first and then find myself in some hole around 6 or 7.

It is a big issue that we don't go out regular, I'm in the UK during the week, but I've got loads of club experience under my considerable belt**! New York, London, Moscow, Barcelona, Frankfurt and I'm a little bit surprised as of yet - not to have found something . Moscow was fcking wild you should have seen it AND New York was CRAP!

** more to do with the size of my pop belly than experience!! smile.gif

As I said at the beginning, I like that mixed kinda of scene where everyone is there for the love of music and dancing - I shall keep my hopes up and maybe you will see me burning up the dance floor - like the sad olde geezer I am: wishing for the old days.

Last note we went to Ampere a few weeks back and there were a number of people doing Tango to house musik….wot TWATS…..I’ve never seen anything SO stupid. Has anyone else seen them?
RocketGirl
yeah, i saw them, but in the ethos of being there for the love of the music & dancing, i just smiled and got on with my own wee boogie. they weren't doing anyone any harm, although i admit it was a little surreal.

i think the clubs here aren't actually too bad at all. ok, there's sometimes a bit of a lack of atmosphere, but there's always something house/techno/electro-related on (some nights too much to choose from) and clubs like die registrateur, rote sonne & the garden usually guarantee a good night... cool.gif

sers stanford,

the clubs in munich never as good as in other towns, and things like the kpo made a hard life for the small but familiar clubs. For nice Clubs I recommend a jorney to Stuttgart. Start at O`reillys jump to the soho followed by the Bar (not befor 10), ... When you get hungry get a seat in Troll ... We often made the three leged race through at least 12 pubs.

Here, I recommend the oldest disco in Munich: crash in Ainmillerstraße Fridays and Saturdays.

LAst time in the Tanzbar just across from theire it was also quite good. Despite the beer price. Something like 3,80 for the Weißbier.

Vollmond or Stragula are nice local pub, where we also partied all nights long.

Cheers Joe

Detroit expat & electronica fiend here,

My favorite was the Funky Kitchen, which recently closed. The mixing was crap, but the space was great and crowd casual and downbeat. On the same block (Blumenstr.) is Die Registratur. Great music, unpretensious, but not very big.

Best all round is Club Harry Klein in the KPO-area, which has great music (regular Kompakt artists) no obnoxious door policy, enough room to dance, and a good mix of kids and us aging hipsters.

Keep a lookout for the World League events, especially those at the Badeanstalt. Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, and Paul Van Dyke were some of the last year's highlights.

Forgot to add: Temple Bar in the KPO. It's a complete dive that plays offbeat 80's and 90's. My biggest complaint about the Munich club scene is the lack of unpretentious shithole bars that play good music. I am here from Detroit though, and this place reminds me of home.

Couldn't disagree more: the best ethos of dance is A group amtosphere. When twits do choreographed dances - it's not about the crowd/individuality/spontaneity - it's about them wanting people to watch their rehearsed moves.

I was in NY, in 1998 and they were still doing break dancing (to house musik to boot) - it totally ruined the atmosphere as there was a circle of people standing around watching - AND when Tony Humphries was playing house musik to die for.

I'm from the 80's Jazz fusion time as well and could spend my Mon/Tues/Weds practicing KILLER MOVES in order to get a crowd to stop dancing and watch...but in the end it's bullshit...ITs about look at me...

house is about the freaks...the group dynamic...the shit dancing with the guy/girl next to you - leave the shows to the Theatre or the Ballet.

I say fcuk OFF Tango dancers...pos to Argentina...**

Sorry for the rant...I should leave the office before my brain explodes...I'm waiting for my 400GB backup drive to format...

** If you want to experience that shit dynamic then go to a Salsa evening...yukkkkkkkk
DesignatedDecoy
Also on the 26th is Electric Delicate, Gayle San at Nachtwerk Club.
She's shit hot (musically and looking) and guaranteed to kick some ass!!
Shit, Gayle San or Westbam?

I take it back! I think it's me...I'm getting to OLD.

I went out with some colleagues in Basingstoke on Weds to a small town Disco...and was schocked to see the collar-up brigade there as well. It must have something to do with hormones of young lads (as it was only young lads!) - some type of symbolic mating sign: about being ready for it^%$^^*(.

And, to make matters worse there were even young 18 to 20 years people buying MOET...not many but enuff... I think footballers and gangster have a lot to answer for: in changing the culture from Lager or Vodka red bull to Champagne...

By the way they played Ghost Busters and Bay Watch...there is a new dance version of Bay Watch which is a big hit with Students (and now in the UK charts)...

Regards
