Skiing lessons for kids

Hi,

I am trying to get my son (4 years) into i ski course this winter. Preferrably in January (so we have enough time for practice).

Any suggestions? Sport Scheck has these types of courses but only starting in February.

The Kindergardens usually organize these things - at least ours does with a certain ski school. If you don't have yours in kindergarden or they don't have it, let me know and maybe yours can go with ours (we also hava a four year old).

I used Alpina Ski School a lot for myself and my kids, we always had a great time with them.

Well our Kindergarden sucks. And we are trying to organize something on our own. Please let me know DDBug where do you live and how can we organize it. My girlfriend would like to send her kid as well.

My eldest son took a course last winter with Ski & Board Giesing. It was five or six Saturdays from January through February, though they have other models too, i.e. several days in succession during the holidays. They have pick up points throughout Munich. It seemed very effective as he learned and enjoyed himself but it is one hell of a long day - from 7 in the morning until 6 at night.

I've also seen a nice little ski school at Beuersberg near the Seeshaupt turn-off of the Garmisch motorway but you'll have to drive out yourself and hang around (or ski) and there will have to be enough snow. All these options are in German, though.

The Ski school in Ismaning is well respected for those on the north and eastern side of the city. They specialise in courses for children ("Zwergel")

We have got family visiting us in February, and they want their young children to have ski lessons (they have never skiied before). The bad news is that their visit clashes with the week of Fasching Tuesday and the German schools ski week. At first glance I think that the ski resorts will be painfully busy, and getting to places such as Garmisch could be one Stau after another.

Which is a shame, because the Garmisch ski school, when I phoned them, told me that they offer a 'turn up and ski' service which will allow the kids to just fit into lessons without pre-booking.

So, two questions please:

a. Can anybody recommend any local resorts that offer good lessons for young children (English speaking)?

b. Is ski week going to be a nightmare on the slopes, and should we recommend that they change their dates?

There are loads of places to go around here. In Germany you have Lenggries, Sudelfeld, Oberammergau or Garmisch like you said. There are most but these are the decent ones. Of course, if it remains as warm as it is now, I wouldn't like to guarantee how much skiing you could actually do at these resorts, except on the glacier at Garmisch. However, except for Garmisch, I would doubt whether these resorts would have english speaking lessons.

A little bit further away (but still only a bit over an hour without traffic) is Skiwelt in Austria. This is a huge area, although can also suffer from lack of snow, especially this year. There will be loads of english speaking ski schools here.

Around this area there are lots of other resorts too, like Kitzbuhel, Hochfugen, St Johann, Hintertux, Mayrhofen.. really, the list just goes on.. all are very international resorts and will have english speaking instructors.. some of these resorts might take 2 hours to get to..

As for whether it will be busy, it will be. It is the most busy time and it will be crazy down there. Expect heavy traffic, especially at the end of the day. Last year we managed to avoid it by leaving really early so as to get to the slopes at around 8:30, and then leaving by about 13:30/14:00..

I went skiing with my youngest daughter this weekend and she got a free ski lesson because we were basically the only people on the slope.. there was only snow in patches but she learned the basics.. it was great fun watching her go up and down on the conveyor belt ...
