How do you rate life in Munich?

Coming from a non European Country, I have yet to be fully accustomed to the lifestyle of Munich. There are many good things and there are many bad things. But all in all, Munich has become my home away from home. I feel that the standard of living is very different and there are many things that I took for granted in the States that I dont have here. What do you guys have to say?
Keydeck
Yes.
boomtown_rat
love it
bonydebbie
bored of it

Munich is a bitch. I hate it.
ajohnson
agree with you, vishalarora. though i can't say that i would consider munich (or Germany for that matter) as a home away from home. at times it feels more like a prison, but that's just because i dislike my job and have to travel every week and be away from Munich and my fiancee and friends there.
Keydeck
In seriousness I consider Munich home. Love the place and apart from a little bar in Negril there's pretty much nowhere I'd rather be living at this point in my life.
Chicago
Yes.
Chicago
... i mean No.
Chicago
... what was the question again?
eurovol
Life is overrated don't you think?
Still I prefer it to the alternative.
Kay
Haven't been here very long. So far: love the city, less keen on the people.
Allershausen
Munich is HOME! (Well Allershausen really, but you know what I mean!) smile.gif
Inflatablewoman
Its like I have never been anywhere else. Oh wait... erm...
bluedave
going back to uk at xmas to get valuations done on my house there with a view to selling it.

Just finally realised i feel a lot more at home here than there so may as well make it so.

To sum up, yeah i think i like it
gideon
munich is crap, full of immigrants wearing Lederhosen and too pissed to riot because theres no good english channel on cable.
hockeywidow
Really like it, much better than another country I lived in (see Kay... I didn't say which country tongue.gif )
Eleanor Rigby
Munich is supposed to be my home but it sure doesn't feel like it sad.gif
Ulysses
I love this city, but what defines home?
persik
i hope i start liking it soon, otherwise i'm in trouble. boring...

but what defines home?

I would say home for me is always where my primary residence (and job if I have one) is, as well as girlfriend and cat. I would never say 'I am going home to the UK for the weekend'.

Neither would I. I've often been asked "How often do you go home?" to which I always reply "I go home every night"!
Wibble
Munich is definitely home for me. When I visit England, after a few days I can't wait to get back home to Munich, drink decent beer, not have to worry about people pulling knives or just being psychotic and generally not having to leave the pub at some ridiculous time.

Sure there are I things I miss like proper supermarkets and edible curry but all in all for me the good far outweighs the bad.
Ulysses
I would say Munich is my home, but even though I've become a bit German perhaps in some ways and really appreciate them for some things, I still don't see myself as a German and that is why I can't see it as home. Truth is, I don't know where home is. It would be where my family is, but they live in Holland and we're originally from South Africa. Munich, I suppose, is the closest I have to home. Still looking for the girlfriend and the cat or rather dog though wink.gif

True. Only problem is the bloody awful people, but then that really is the only down side compared to London I think. And the problem isn't solved (for anyone like me who wants to learn German) by developing a group of expat mates.

yep. with ya on that one. munich is sooo damn well organized and safe that it does get boring...

ok, ok, it's nice to be safe and not have to worry about getting shot everytime you leave the house, but...

If they could bring the everyday banter and humour from London here, it would be perfick.

I'm moving to Munich in Jan for a couple of years, and I must say none of you are filling me with great enthusiasm at the moment!

Is life in Munich all it's cracked up to be?

Munich is like any other place. It's what you make of it. There are a lot of people on TT who moan and groan and refuse to integrate themselves. You make the effort and Munich will repay it with interest. You don't, then it's going to suck with interest too. Serious advice, steer clear of ex-pats for as long as possible! ph34r.gif

the most fun town in Germany.

But I suppose everything's relative!
grazzenger
munich's great and my home (well, like allershausen but mine's freising, soon to be erding). i think munich suits a... oh how to say this, more mature person. eg less night clubs, more bars and pubs.

home is where the wife is!

edit: ah lassie, just seen your post. no, i wouldn't say it's the most fun town in germany. i believe that honour would go to berlin or hamburg or perhaps koln. that's not saying it's crap at all, but see my comment above about bars vs. nightclubs.

Nah you'll like it mate. Two years will fly. Start boarding. It will make you very, very happy. Beers not half bad too.

We all love Munich. I bitched bad at the start. Ask gideon. But its kinda hard to intensely dislike good beer, a stunning city and the mountains.
xargon
Love it here. Feels like home and has been a home for many years now.

mtv? bitch? germany? noooooooooooooooooooooo!

lassie, having been someone "who's gone native" (winks a forum eye over to mtv) all i can say is munich is a fab town, with probably the best "freetime" choices available in any city i've lived in. ignore other posts, including my own, i think because this subject turns up with the frequency of an unloved season, that people are taking the piss a bit.
Lassie
By 'freetime' I take it you mean beering and skiing? There isn't a Reeperbahn equivalent in Munich is there?!
Yeti
The only thing that Munich is missing is a seashore.
boomtown_rat
freetime is the time when you are not working/studying or sleeping

according to conversations i have had with various people.

SKIING IS BETTER THAN SEX. who needs the reeperbahn, its pretty crap anyway.

Unfortunately there isn't - but Hamburg beats Munich is nearly every other aspect as well.

The only thing that Munich is missing is a seashore.

And remotely pleasant locals, but lets not split hairs.

Who needs nice natives when the beer is like mother's milk. After 7 you stop hearing them anyway.

These bright days are worth more to me than all the manners and humour London had to offer.
Yeti
I've meet loads of nice natives but then it's probably my exceedingly sunny disposition or the fact that I'm a grumpy old cunt who fits right in.
gideon
i never understand zhis thing about grumpy natives. if you speak german they're fine. if you cant they're fine. just smile and shrug your shoulders.
Owain Glyndwr
compared to other German cities the locals here do come off as grumpy old farts, even to other Germans.
Dally M
I think many Foreigners stick with people who speak their mother tongue which is OK but often the people dont stay too long and so the circle of friends is always changing to some degree which in turn doesnt help to settle down.I know a few TTers but most of my friends are German and have roots here. Some live in Munich others Bad Reichenhall, Heidelberg, Augsburg etc.Try to learn German and force yourself to speak it is another way to feel more settled. Its finding the balance where you feel at home here and want to stay but still keep in contact with your family and friends from elsewhere.Things are never perfect and some days are worse than others but if you want to stay then look to build a life around stability rather than things which are temporary. As they say what you put in is often what you get out
Lassie
Sage words Dally M. But judging by german colleagues, a few beers and a curry are much more fun with native english speakers!
