Wedding dress shops - Munich

Recommended stores for buying dresses
Blimeygirl
Does anyone know some nice shops in town to look for wedding dresses? Nothing chi ching or too frou frou. Just need to check out some styles...and prices.

Has anyone had any experience with online dress shopping? Wondering about that one.

Thanks!

Sonnenstr. between Sendlinger Tor and Karlsplatz has a bunch of wedding dress shops.
bubblylady
There is a small one hidden in the Asamhof Passage at Sendlingerstrasse towards Kreuzstrasse.

I passed one last night on Breiner Str, very close to Koingsplatz, they had a few beautiful dresses in the window. Something a little different from the norm.

Can anyone give me a tip on good shops to find a wedding dress in Munich? I definitely don't want anything white and flouncy, and it doesn't even need to be a wedding dress per se. Shops that sell evening gowns etc. might be more suitable. Any information much appreciated. Thanks.

Whilst in the hunt for a tiara I was in about 5 on Sonnenstrasse. Also in Ludwig Beck they have v reasonably priced white.ivory dresses. I think they were all under é300.

a gf of mine got hers on ebay. any alterations she made still saved her hundreds of euros. it takes the tradition out of trying one on and weeping though.
scrapper
j. crew also has a simple but pretty wedding dress line. you can check them out online.

Get married in a dirndl if you don't want white and flouncy. That's what I'm planning on doing.

Also on Sonnenstrasse is Lilly, not too expensive and some non-fluffy designs. www.lilly.de, can see offer and ask for a catalog.

I can recommend La Kopé Exquisite Brautmoden, Brienner Str. 43. I have bought evening and cocktail dresses there and the young owner is a seamstress with great ideas on customizing things and also persuades you to try things you think you cannot wear. She stocks lovely wedding dresses, some of which are really quite unusual. There is also a very smart looking shop in the Kreuzstrasse off the Sendlinger Tor which might be worth a look.

Wedding and Event
New store opening at the corner of Heidemann Str. and Ingolstädter Str. The store location is serviced by the busses from Am Hart, Munchener Freiheit, Kieferngarten, Feldmoching and basically many stops along the U2 and U6 lines. It looks to be larger and more specialized than other stores selling similar wares.

maybe you have already married, but I had my weddingdress sewn up and it was done just as I wanted it (no silly extras...) - ok, it did cost a bit, but definitely worth it. A little store between Sendlingerstrasse and Stachus (can´t remember the name right now, but it was something italian (on the same side of sonnenstrasse as lilly but closer to Sendlinger Tor (from the outside it looks more like a mini fitting room than a store...) - excellent service, all silk directly from Italy etc...

Carpediem, the area you describe is heaving with wedding shops. Your description is none too precise.

I think that `La Kopé Exquisite Brautmoden` is a really good Store with many dresses for you to choose, the lady is very helpful and gives you good advices. In that store you can find everything to wear in that special day! That is located in Brienner Str. 43, near Köningsplatz I guess.

La Kopé has moved to Oberanger 43

As this is an old thread, just thought I would see if anyone has some more recent suggestions?

Nothing new to report just a thumbs up to Wedding and Event. My neighbor bought a gorgeous red evening dress for a big party in London. They have lots of stuff other than just wedding dresses.

If you like Rembo dresses, try Happy Brautmoden.

The shop is quite small but I found the staff to be very good. Their new collection is partially in already, so its a good time to shop. I was just in there yesterday for my second visit.

They listen to what you want. If you haven't a clue what you want then they try out different styles to work out what your taste is. They also encourage you to try quite a number of dresses quickly and then go back through the few that you preferred again at a slower pace.

That's the only shop in Munich I had such a positive experience with, the other shops discouraged me from trying on more than 3 (or max 5) because it would "confuse" me ... even though I wasn't convinced by the onces I tried on and was trying to make it clear to the staff. Ok that could have been my fault for not being direct enough, but it can be intimidating in these shops and if you really don't know what you want then you are sometimes fighting a losing battle to express yourself. I had learned from previous experience by the time I went to Happy Brautmoden. So I brought in some magazine clippings to show them a few styles I like, and they worked from there.

What I also liked about Happy Brautmoden is that the staff gave me an honest opinion when I asked, and explained why they didn't like certain aspects. They don't just try to please the customer if they reckon a different dress is better.
Hope this helps - I found the whole experience horrible until the end, but now I'm delighted!

By the way, if you want any more tips just ask me here or via PM. A colleague had a very good experience so far in another place, I did the first time but was disappointed the second. So it can be that different people have different experiences.

Thanks Dreamer! Its actually for a friend, I am taking her out on her first attempt at shopping for a dress for her wedding. She is looking for something simple and fairly cheap. Do you know if any of the shop assistants speak english? My german could get us by, but since she's the bride I think she might be more comfortable working in english.

Kitkat, since its the first day out I think we are going to try in town first, but I will def. give her the suggestion!

Keep the tips coming!

Yes I would recommend LA Kopé too but mainly because they have a lot of choice. Be careful because you have to have an appointment, if you show up like this I dont think you'll be allowed to try dresses on.

I can recommend another wedding dress shop it's called Brautmode, just off the Kaufingerstr. in the Damenstiftstr. I believe. The lady is a bit special, very Munich bavarian, meaning she's a bit bossy but she KNOWS what she's doing and will advise you and not tell you you look like a princess in every dress you try on. When I went I suggested trying some dresses on and she was like "no thats not you" so I thought that was a bit cheeky but she was always right and I did find my dress and it's FABULOUS!! She only has dresses she carefully chooses, and they are ALL GORGEOUS! Def the best bridal shop in Munich in my opinion!!

Good luck and have fun!! smile.gif

Without wanting to be rude, do you know the approximate price range? There are a few shops on Sonnenstr. that have cheaper dresses - still gorgeous, but more for the budget-oriented bride. Lilly Brautkleider springs to mind, mainly from the magazines and their website. I can't recommend Lily either way, as I didn't go to that place.

I don't think La Kopé is the place to go if you are price-oriented, as I found their dresses start at 900 euro upwards. Or I just have expensive taste! There's many dresses at around 500-800 euro out there that are lovely. If she's got a budget up to 1,500 euro then there's lots of choice everywhere. Best thing would be to telephone the shop in advance and ask what price range their dresses are at. You don't waste your time or theirs then. Also, when you visit a shop, make it clear what your upper limit is so you don't focus on something thats out of your budget.

I'm not sure what price the dresses start at in Happy Brautmoden, maybe check first. And wherever you go, make an appointment if you can, as it gives you more dedicated time with the staff to go through options.

I'm not actually sure, but I wouldn't be too optimistic. I speak German, but I hadn't a clue of all the lingo that goes with dresses in German (nor in English for that matter!). So I found myself using simple German and constantly asking what they meant, because my vocabulary just wasn't up to scratch in that area. None of them really knew the words in English, unfortunately. So that's another advantage if you phone in advance, you can ask if anyone there speaks English.

Good luck.

Brautgalerie Irene Krenzer is a lovely little shop between Sendlinger Tor and Stachus in the Damenstifstr. The owner, a lady with around 30 years of experience in bridal fashion, actually encourages simply to come by without an appointment, without the usual Pretence. She has great Spanish dresses that not many other stores carry, like San Patrick or Pronovias, also in silk and she has really competitive prices for this range. The best thing is, you deal with the owner and the woman is in control of everything. If you like something, she calls up distributor right away to find out when you could get it, and sticks to the schedule, which is not always the case with other stores. She doesnt really speak english, but is really open and even rather resolute, she will go out of her way to get you what you want.

Damenstiftstraße 14, 80331 München
Tel. 089 / 26 61 37, Fax. 089 / 26 59 22

P.S. Poulain, since I dont think there are other bridal stores in Damenstifstr, I think we are talking about the same store, and it is definitely called Brautgalerie. At least your description of Frau Krenzer is 100% matching:)

I just saw this, I guess I should provide the update!

A few weeks after my post, we did venture down Sonnenstrasse on a dress hunt one Saturday.

The experience was not nearly as intimidating as I expected, though in most shops German was the preferred language and with many of the shop assistants being older women, their English was very limited. We got on very well with my crap German anyway and we dealt with a few really nice shop assistants, and I even haggled in German!! We ended up blowing the budget on the dress, but finding the most gorgeous dress for the bride-to-be at Horn Brautmode.

Lily was the only place we encountered on the day that required that we have an appointment and you needed to get one about 2 weeks in advance. It seemed like they might do a bit more with English speakers there, though.

I hope this helps someone in the future! smile.gif

If anyone is interested and wears a US size 4 I have an Allen Schwarz strapless ivory/ecru gown (original price was $865) with a fingertip veil (op $200) and matching 2 inch heels in the box (op $120) in a size 39.5! smile.gif Garment bag included!

I don't plan on marrying this man again, so why keep the dress?

PM for pics & details & prices!

Update...buyer beware!

Bride is still waiting for the dress from Horn, we ordered in November. In Feb. she received a letter in the mail from the lawyers stating that the Horn is going bankrupt!!! The dress should have been ready in Feb!! She is calling every week now and they keep telling her it will be here next week...

Once she finally gets the dress, does anyone know a dress maker/tailor that could do the hem and bustle? She doesn't trust these folks to do the alterations for fear that once she gets it she mightn't get it back again!

Also take note, it seems alot of the smaller shops on Sonnenstrasse are going out of business so as much as you'd want a special dress for the big day...it might be an idea to stick with the bigger chains down there...

Thanks for the warning!

Update...again...

Dress has arrived, and alterations should (allegedly) be finished next week. IMHO, due to the lateness of the dress the alterations should be dune for free (unfortunately this isn't America)...

Bought my dress today rolleyes.gif. Trying on lots of dresses was good fun, but now I'm glad it's over. My experiences with various shops are:

Brautgalerie Irene Krenzer: Well, the owner may have a lot of experience but I found her way too bossy (and I'm German!). She put me into a dress with a very wide skirt (which admittedly looked quite good) but even though I told her all the time I didn't feel comfortable in this kind of dress she completely ignored my wishes.

La Kopé: Wide range of clothes and good service but I had the impression that they were a bit overpriced.

I forgot the name but just opposite of La Kopé is an Italien shop where they make silk-clothes according to your wishes. They have some lovely dresses (prices seemed ok for the material) which you can try on as a starting point for developing your custom made dress.

I finally bought my dress at "Mitgift" (Herzog Wilhelm Str. 19). Nice shop, young and very relaxed team.

Good luck to the future Mrs Damon!
