am flying to London Friday night and want to take one back for a mate.
thinking to buy one after work Friday and wrap it in tinfoil for him.
where would I get a good (ready-cooked of course) one in town?
butterbean
Haxnbauer maybe?
Showem
Yeah, I'm pretty sure Butterbean is right, that Haxnbauer does street sales. Sparkassenstraße.

thanks you guys!!!
ere, where's Sparkassenstr.?
Showem
Just off Tal, in the center of town. Turn down the corner where you see the Sparkasse bank.
Keydeck
It's down the side of the Sparkasse in Tal just after Marienplatz, I think.
butterbean
near Marienplatz. head towards Tal, and hang a left after you go under the old town hall. down about a block.
Keydeck
Got that? laugh.gif
Moonboot
heehee...thanks a million! you guys are great! will pop by there Friday after work armed with my tin foil!

The meat counter at Galeria Kaufhoff also does a good one. While you're there, check out the €4 roast chicken (yep, €4 for a whole cooked chicken).

Go to Karstadt Food Dept ( Basement ) in Kaufinger str., about halfway down, you,ll get one wrapped in tinfoil ,fresh from the grill for €4,90 ***, they weigh at least 1200 grams and are delicious. But why don't you cook one in England? All you need is a carpet knife , the ones where you can break the top off the blade when it gets blunt. Let the blade protrude about 10mm out of the handle and cut the diamond shapes in the skin that deep, rub a mixture of salt and pepper into the skin and cook in a hot air oven at 150 Cel for about 90 min and then dowse with beer and grill for another 15 minutes at topheat until skin is crispy. Works every time and tastes just as good, better in your case as it will be fresh. Bring some baking mix for Brezln from here and make the treat complete.

Last time I checked, the UK didn't allow Fruit/meat imports of any kind by private persons.. Has this changed?
I'd ask HMCE befor I go to avoid any problems...

Everytime you see a huge sign at an EU airport such as "DON'T BRING YOUR FOOD IN TO <country x>*" you need to note the "*". Look at the bottom... This normally says something like "* except of course if you're coming from an EU, EEA or some other countries we trust <list follows>".

They try to scare you first, but mostly they can't stop you.

(but check with customs if you like, I'm not a customs officer!)

ooh thanks for the tip! unfortunately I won't have time to cook one as we arrive in Stansted about 11pm Friday night and we're already going drinking on Saturday at midday! Sunday I will have a hangover. but if he likes the Schweinshaxe will promise to cook him one from fresh next time...so thanks for the cooking tips! really appreciated!

think it's still not allowed, I usually just smuggle stuff in my handluggage...tins of Wurst and Wurstaufschnitt and the like. have not been caught so far touch wood!

There's a Schlemmermeyer stand on Viktualienmarkt where they'll serve you a hearty fatty slab in exchange for a good portion of your month's salary. Tasty but teuer.

Haxnbauer is great - order the whole haxn and a beer. Nothing else. Mmmm, Bavarian health food.
