Ok, so I havent been yet and I really want to go to
Hofbräuhaus, it´s a brewery apparently. This is an open invite to anyone to come along as there seems to be a lack of anything planned for this sat night. Is anyone going to the Rugby???
When: This sat night the 6th March
TIme: Umm 7.30 onwards?? Is this a good time??
Where: Hofbräuhaus, behind
Marienplatz apparently.
Ok, so Ive no idea where it is (bekky says she can get me there so I´m relying on her!!) but you all probably know anyway. If someone could put in an addy and a little map I´d be much obliged. And I´m keen to go anywhere afterwards if this place is not your thing!
Ok so now I´ve posted it. Do I need to book a table or do you just turn up??

Where are you watching the rugby--and, pardon my ignorance/innocence, who is playing?
I'm at Bondi 3 pm (ahem, I mean 15:00), and if anyone's about, I'd love the chance to say hi to some of the citizens of these parts.l

It's a couple of streets down from
Marienplatz. I don't think it's necessary to book a table, unless there are a lot of people going. I cannot imagine that all those Japanese tourists book tables. Usually it just takes 1 mass to get them drunk anyway, so the people turnover is pretty high

And since the people there consists of 99,9999% tourists, it should be allright.

I'd be up for some Hofbrauhaus action - haven't been for a while, but it's best if we get a reasonable sized crowd together. I don't know if it's possible to book a table there. In any case, I never have. I'd favour going a bit earlier because it does get crowded, and we're a better chance of a good seat earlier. It closes at about 11:30 too, so good to kick on from afterwards.

@Presh
Don't meet at the Hofbräuhaus, this is usually full, and very load, so you have almost no chance of meeting anyone.
The Hofbräuhaus is opposite the Hard Rock Cafe, there is also a great quiet Baverian restaraunt just next to the Hard Rock Cafe. My suggestion would be, if you really insist to go to the Hofbräuhaus, meet before go in have a walk around, listen to 1 or two songs from the band, if you can get seats, sit and drink a beer, then go across to the other side to Wirtshaus, and eat some good Baverian food there.

Hmmm ok. What time do you recommend Hazz? Perhaps we can go early have a few then go to GM´s??? or anywhere else??

Comment about the place :
I went there once and it was too loud (there was an orchestra which obviously is always playing there ). It´s very bavarian : means the food an the beer are good.
I hope you´ll like it - Have fun !

I reckon go once if you've never been, but it's really a tourist trap, there is better beer (if that's you thang) about elsewhere, ie augustiner...mmmmm Mind you though it's worth going into the Hofbrauhaus, just to try and see the hash job they made of trying to get rid of the swash-stickers (or the reversed religious symbol)(deliberately mispelt so no to offend and get picked up on by the authorities...) on the ceilings

Mar 5 2004, 12:40 pm
No offence pepper but Hofbräuhaus has got to be done properly if people have never been before..that means get there early, drink at least 3 masses and have a little gig with the bavarian band ! It's not too big so should be able to find everyone, just as long as you stick to finding places fairly near the entrance.
Count me in Presh !

Mar 5 2004, 12:41 pm
Yeah becs you the man (err woman!!). Ok so what time should we make it then? 6pm or something? Im definately up for a boogie with the bavarian band!! Apparently the rugby starts at 17.00 at GMs.
becs
Mar 5 2004, 12:44 pm
Yeah 6 sounds fine..and if people want to turn up a bit later then we'll make sure that we've saved some seats

Mar 5 2004, 12:45 pm
@ becs - Well I must say, I found this place was OK, but I remember having to change soon after as I was covered in beer. Actually last time I was in there, I actually had problems seeing Germans, it was mainly full of people from the far east.
For a loud (I mean loud) evening starters, drinking a few beers its OK, but not a place your really go regularly. As I said there is really a great place opposite called Wirtshaus, and its really nice in there, quiet (you can hear yourself think) and great Baverian food in there !

Well, good point, but the point I was really making, you just have to go there, sit there and try to enjoy the environment, as its difficult to hold a conversation once the band starts. They are just too loud.
I used to enjoy going to the Hofbräuhaus, but have just discovered some other better places since then, and well the Hofbräuhaus is on the average list now !
It is an experiance that everyone should have once, I agree about that !

I have a confession: I actually think Hofbräuhaus is okay.
For years, I refused to take my visitors there, think it was too tacky and saying they could go themselves if they wanted. But back in December we went with some Christmas visitors and had a good meal and good beer for an okay price. Since then, I've been 2 more times, each time finding the service quick, efficient and friendly (I can't believe I'm writing that, but it was true), the beer great, and the atmosphere pretty alright too. It's fun seeing people from all over the world excited to be sitting at tables of 10 with other foreigners, drinking beer, swaying to Bavarian folk music.
Now, I actually put it on the list of places to think about going for a beer when in the center of town. Might be a different story come summer and more tourist groups hit, but right now, it's good fun.

If there are too many Japanese there we can always shout Kaji Da! Hashire!
in unison.

That was my original suggestion, to have a look around then go over the road to Wirtshaus, but I do agree it should be something everyone experiances once. Its amazing to see so many Japanese people in one place looking exceptionally strangely at the Schweinehaxe and thinking do people really eat this ?
I am sure the first time its fun, but it is something you do when you first arrive or you have guests to visit.

The hofbräuhaus is well worth doing at least once as long as your tongue is firmly in your cheek - its a bit like a slightly camp bavaria themepark (not 'camp' really, but thats the best word i can think of to describe its 'so naff its good' stylee). Despite what the Augustiner mafia say, the beer is good and not too expensive and there's all kinds of old men with those basil brush hats on wandering around. And the band is good too. and the blokes' loos have 'breathalise yourself' machines, which is thoughtful.
I can't make it 'cos i'm off up north, but have fun!

Hofbraühaus...hmmm...I heard recently that in addition to the favourite 1 L mass we all know and love...there is also a 5 L and you must use your forearm to pick it up

(*tries to visualize*)
I know I know...it sounded ridiculous to me at the time too...and I quickly said not a chance...but...somehow...after living here for a while...I can almost picture it

(*mouth waters*)
Anyone know...fact or fiction? I would love to put this to bed.
BTW, great chicken there too. Half chicken and a mass...best combo ever.

It's a must and it is great fun, the more ppl you are and the more they drink.
Its a tourist trap alright, but even Germans go there, and although there are so many tourists there are still some germans which refuse not to go to their stammtisch like dad and grand dad did. Of course they play the orchestra, but don't know which time.
Will try to make it there as well. Get the dirndl out!
I guess after lunch is a good time, like maybe 2-3 pm.

I reckon go at around 6pm. I'm up for it - like I said, it's been a while since I've gone
Also, fuck the conversation - the Hofbrauhaus isn't there to be able to converse in. There's plenty of other nights and places we can do that... Sway along with the music and prost occasionally for no apparent reason, and we'll all have a great time.
