I can't make it this week now. Shall we meet next Tuesday? That'd be Oct. 7. I personally could do 20:00 at...
Rusticana. Just because I've never been there and I really right now feel like some ribs.
I thought maybe instead of suggesting a book and all reading it (our MO so far) we could, um, each read a book and then come and tell everyone else why they should read it. And then organize some books for us all to read together for the next meeting(s).
Good idea? Sound stupid? Post below!

Hi there.
I was never part of this event but really miss being in a book club so I would love to join. The place (have never been there but the reviews are great) sounds good would love to try. And the idea with the different books is fine with me. Hope to see you there on the 7th.

The reading and reporting is a good idea. I may not be here for the 7th but if I am I will attend.

My husband and I would like to join the book club. Gen's suggestion sounds great to us.
Look forward to seeing you there.
Another suggestion was that anybody with some books to swap should bring them along. Just a few though, to protect those who are already running out of shelf space.
I feel a cold coming on but think I should still be breathing properly tomorrow evening. Sign up please so I can make a reservation, I'll call later today...

I'll call this evening and see how it goes, their online reservation form only works when you send it off two days in advance and nobody's answering the phone right now...
If I turn up with a paper bag on my head getting a table should be no problem.
I reserved for five (just in case) under the name "Cory", 20:00. Post here if I need to update that number -- though they really appear to pick up the phone only after 18:00.

See you tomorrow.
Dammit, this cold is beating me. Staying home from work and of course I can't justify going out at night if I've stayed home... plus I don't think I'll feel like it, and you probably don't want to get sick from me any more than my colleagues do.

Have a great time and hope the ribs are luscious!

You have lived in this country too long. Pity, hope you get well soon.

Gen: I hope that you feel better soon. It's unfortunate that you won't be able to go tonight, but a solid day of rest will hopefully do wonders for your cold. I look forward to meeting you in the future.
Yeti & Pernilleo: My husband and I look forward to meeting you at 20:00 at the restaurant.
Just checking whether anybody is else is bringing books to swap?

No, I won't be bringing any books to swap.
Nice to meet some new people last night and to hear about some new books. Also I got to sample the ribs and they were excellent.
Should the next meeting still be at the end of this month or next month? I will probably not be in Munich.
Also book suggestions?
Good grief! Did you not even decide what to read next month? I'm going back to bed.

Thanks for a great evening, everyone. We really enjoyed meeting you.
And thanks, Gen, for picking out the restaurant and making the reservation. The restaurant was a very good pick. We hope that you are feeling much better today.
As for book possibilities, here’s a few that might be interesting. (I am going to try to insert links to descriptions of the books on amazon.com so you can see reviews.)
1.
The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz (2008 Pulizer Prize Winner – Fiction)
2.
The Quest for Christa T by Christa Wolf3.
The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu4.
What Is the What by Dave Eggers (previously suggested by someone on this site)
ADDITIONAL NOTE: By the way, it probably goes without saying, but some of the reviews on amazon.com may reveal too much of the plot. So if you use the links (which, I am happy to see, actually work) then you should proceed carefully.

The next meeting should be at the end of November. It gives everybody a chance to get and read the selected book.
My proposal would be for:
Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter HoegAmazon.com Review
In this international bestseller, Peter Høeg successfully combines the pleasures of literary fiction with those of the thriller. Smilla Jaspersen, half Danish, half Greenlander, attempts to understand the death of a small boy who falls from the roof of her apartment building. Her childhood in Greenland gives her an appreciation for the complex structures of snow, and when she notices that the boy's footprints show he ran to his death, she decides to find out who was chasing him. As she attempts to solve the mystery, she uncovers a series of conspiracies and cover-ups and quickly realizes that she can trust nobody. Her investigation takes her from the streets of Copenhagen to an icebound island off the coast of Greenland. What she finds there has implications far beyond the death of a single child. The unusual setting, gripping plot, and compelling central character add up to one of the most fascinating and literate thrillers of recent years.
A very enjoyable and gripping read.
I'm for Smilla -- I like Krimis. End of November, so that's the last Tuesday which would be Nov. 25.
Glad you enjoyed the restaurant, wish I'd got to go. I'm even still sick at home today with my stuffy head and sneezing. Have just taken a Contact Cold and Flu and what's in it? Friggin' aspirin. Anyway the TT reviews said it was always packed there, so yeah, you have to reserve.

We can't make it that last week of November, but would be available earlier in the month. Otherwise, we'll just plan to see you at a later meeting.
I'm sorry to hear that you're still not feeling well, Gen. Having recently recovered from my own cold, I am very sympathetic.
The 18th would be fine with me too actually. Any other votes to change the date?

Hi there.
Thank you all for a good night Tuesday.
I was going to suggest Smilla too after we talked about it. I have read it but it is many many years ago so I look forward to reading it again.
The 18th is fine with me.
See you all there.

Hello everybody,
I am new here and I am looking for a book club. May I join your circle?
By the way, is it always Tuesday? If I may join, when is the next meeting and what book are you reading now? And where.
Thanks
Jana
The title currently reads:
TT Munich book reading and discussion club, Tentatively 8pm Tuesday 18.Nov.2008 @ Venue TBD

I'd say we're reading Smilla.
Venue is still TBD but it's a month away yet... and yes, this is the official Munich TT Book Club, the poster of
the other thread hasn't returned to clarify anything so we don't know what's going on there. We have met mostly Tuesdays, and yes, you can certainly join.

The only thing I couldn´t find in your thread is what TBD means and where it is. Could you explain please.
Have ordered Smilla and will be ready by Nov 18.

How about the
Augustiner Bierhalle, which is located in the pedestrian zone about half a block from
Karlsplatz.
Centrally located, good food and beer, reasonably priced. We were there recently on a weeknight, and the noise level was fine for conversing.

Hello,
I was wondering if I could join your book club. I'm nearly finished with Smilla's Feeling for Snow and would love to discuss it. Has a place been established for November 18th?
This is the right thread to post in btw. Cafe Kosmos hin oder her.

Augustiner is fine with me. I will join in any place, anyway.
I added an
Amazon link for Smilla's Sense of Snow to the
wiki page. Gives ol' Bob a kickback if you buy it through the link -- or anything else. Like maybe a nice new
Pioneer KURO?

By the way, I bought my copy of the book at the
Munich Readery. I asked for the 10% discount for bookclubbers that is discussed on the book club wiki page, but I was told that the discount is no longer offered.
What the!?!?! Well that was certainly nice of the proprietor to let us know wasn't it.

Yeah, I was pretty bummed. He did say that if a book club wants to talk to him about arranging something, he'd be up for discussing it.
As a newbie, of course, I wasn't really in a position to represent the group in discussing an arrangement.
I believe it was his idea in the first place. He posted on the thread about it ages ago. Tja.
