Well this book seems so far to be more about whacking off by yourself than about pornography. I know several regulars can't show tomorrow evening, so I'll just autocratically postpone this discussion, because I don't want to just discuss masturbation with myself. Ick.
fraufruit
Gen,

When will it be and, if I have time to read it, may I borrow your copy please? I can get it on Friday.

Love Roth and can't believe I haven't read this classic. Sounds like it's right up my

Fruit
Gen
I don't know when we'll next meet -- maybe people can make next Tuesday evening? I can't lend out the copy I have though, it's not mine.

See you at the Hausfrauen Fruity!
adrian_t
How about we have the Portnoy's Complaint discussion for our scheduled meeting on the last Tuesday in June (24th)?

The book is a quick and easy read, and it's widely available. It would be nice to have some new people at the meeting, so just read the book, post here and come along. It would be equally nice to have some old people come, so the same applies there too.
Inessa
We should be there in June (though I can tell you right now that UpQuark won't have read the book). Sadly, we'll then be away in July and August again.
Gen
June 24 is good for me as well.
Gen
Right then,

June 24 is tomorrow. Curry Night is deciding where to go, TTTuesday will soon choose a venue, we too must leg ourselves fest. Where to? Also a beergarden like everybody else? Maybe a different beergarden than everyone else?
adrian_t
Crap, I absolutely can't make it tomorrow. Anyone else planning to attend?
Gen
yes
Inessa
We're not going to make it, unfortunately, we just have too many other things going on this week. UpQuark hasn't read the book and I've not even flipped though it for a refresher. We won't be there in July or August either.
Kat
I read Portnoy's Complaint when I was about 13-14 yrs old and can only remember now that it was, indeed, almost entirely about whacking off. I found it informative at the time. laugh.gif
Gen
well I won't go either then
Gen
So shall we make plans for a date in September?
pyrchick
How does one enlist for the next book reading? Can't seem to find the correct link in...
Gen
Forecast for next Tuesday is lovely. Given that it's five days away it may be less than accurate but who cares. Let's discuss this damn book and move on -- are you with me? Where?

pyrchick, one doesn't enlist, one posts that one is coming and makes a suggestion as to a good locale. Preferably a beergarden at this time of year.
Yeti
Enlisting? I thought there was a draft.

I better read the damn thing now and do some research.
Gen
Drafting here? Are you kidding? Not with Germans in the office shutting all the windows.

Locale yeah, still need one. Sunny one please. With lots of alcohol.
Yeti
I heard rumours that there is a Biergarten attached to the Hofbräuhaus, I have never been though. Might be worth going to for the novelty value.
Topsy
Did the book club die?
Are you meeting in September, and what book are you reading?
Yeti
Damn it woman, we're meeting in August and if it did die then your turning up might be the last arcane factor after the headless goat and the zombie chicken that could bring it back to life, just not as we know it.

Have book, will travel. Thanks Gen.
Tiggi
Well, Portnoy's Complaint does seem to have been the book of choice for about the last half-year. I'd also be interested to know what gets picked for September. Particularly since a cursory glance at the archives suggests a fitting emphasis on cake.
Gen
Hofbräuhaus Biergarten it is then. I suppose we'd better reserve, as I have been there and it has been busy.
Yeti
So to facilitate reservations it's time to put your name to the list of those who want to discuss the unpornagraphic but funny.
Johnny English
I reckon this whole thread is some kinda coded invite to wild nights of coke fuelled bondage parties. Simply no way can people be sad enough to sit around discussing books.
Yeti
If the bondage is done properly and the coke doesn't kick in discussing may be all that is possible.
Tiggi
A reluctant Roth fan, perhaps?

I'm still holding out for cake-fuelled, personally. I'll sit around and discuss almost anything, given good cake. Even bondage. Or indeed the relative sadness of print versus screen.
Yeti
It's an enjoyable read, could have run on for many more pages. Very little cake, no coke and almost no bondage whatsoever, but still worth reading.
Gen
I don't think it could have gone on for much longer without the fella realizing what he'd gone to the therapist for and what the solution to his problems is. You can only self-reflect so much before you figure it out on your own -- as long as you're not an idiot. But we'll discuss more of that on Tuesday over a meditative beer.

1. Gen
2. Yeti
3. Tiggi, provided the Hofbräuhaus has cake and coke. Which btw is rather likely.
4. JE for the bondage bit but will bugger off home afterwards

Please correct any mistakes in the list so far and add yourself if you'd like to totter along.
Tiggi
Hang on, I said September! Can't make tomorrow, sorry.

Question arrived by PM: I haven't read the book even though I honestly do intend to someday, can I come along and drink beer with you or will your conversation make no sense?

Have you ever masturbated? Then you will have something to contribute to the book discussion. Come along but do post your name here.

This is not to say that anyone who posts is admitting to ever having masturbated. That would be TMI. If you don't know what that abbreviation means, then you cannot come.
Yeti
My conversation will make no sense regardless of what you honestly intend to do someday.
adrian_t
4. me.
AgentLloyd
Portnoy's Complaint is a fantastic read.
Gen
Yay adrian! AgentLloyd appears to be too far away to come with us but perhaps others are still too shy... you'll just have to hear about our shocking the tourists.
Gen
Oh yes and will 19:30 do? Yeti can you call to reserve? I have officemates.
Yeti
It's not possible to reserve, so we will just have to turn up unshaven, obnoxious and overfriendly.
Gen
Oh dear. Our conversation will probably help us make more friends than we want really. I'll be sure to not look attractive tonight myself...

Oh and for info for those reading the thread who haven't posted, do remember that a post will not be taken as an admission to or an omission of any particular sexual activity.

And tonight we might as well choose a book for September.
Topsy
so, did you choose a book for september, then?
Gen
We couldn't really decide so we thought we might go to a bookshop in September and um... look. Right guys?
Yeti
Yes, there was a mention of looking for a book. In a shop. In September.
ranjithvenkatesh
I picked up this book by chance and have read through 50 pages and itz loads of fun!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corrections

Any views on it? Could it be a possible book of the month?

PS: I joined you guys for the Lolita discussion
Gen
Mmh, could be. Everyone I know read it two years ago. I think I have a copy I could lend. I didn't like it though -- not that that's a reason not to use it, I'm just saying.
Yeti
I remember reading it but only once, which is a bad sign. I preferred "Strong Motion" by the same author.

A few suggestions from me:

Atonement by Ian McEwan, because I feel like reading it again.
Eureka Street by Robert McLiam Wilson, Irish but with a different angle on the misery.
On The Black Hill by Bruce Chatwin, because I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also, was there not a rumour of a fact-finding fieldtrip?
lilcactus
Has a book been selected for September? I am interested in participating.

If you're still looking for a book, maybe the "Past Selections" list from Oprah's Book Club would be helpful. :)

Inessa
We will very likely not be there again in September, but I can recommend the book 'What is the What' by Dave Eggers.
lilcactus
I just read some reviews of the Eggers book, and it sounds very interesting (with some disagreement over whether Eggers successfully pulled off a "fictionalized autobiography" of a living person).

Do you think that it might be helpful to choose the books for the next 3-4 months? Then if someone is going to miss a month, he/she can still purchase the next book and start reading.
lilcactus
Hi, just checking in to see if there's been any field trips taken / final decisions made with respect to the book selection for the the September 30 meeting.
Pernilleo
Hi.

I would like to join the book club next week but I still do not know what book you are reading for this month. Could someone please let me know.

Thank you.
Pernille
Yeti
At the moment we are not reading anything, unless privately between consenting pages.

On The Black Hill by Bruce Chatwin is still my suggestion. Can be read quickly and it's available.
It may be too late though.
Gen
Never too late. Did we really decide that we wanted to meet during Oktoberfest though, that's a question.
