What would be interesting is to meet twice a month. Some of us can manage 2 books a month.
(Meeting once a month, can put things on the cold easily. You miss one meeting because of work or something and you are almost off for two months)
From my experience, I think you'll find once a month is more than adaquate for most people.

I think pi or e times a month would be better.

i? How would that work? Would it involve dropping acid?

You're an engineer. Have you never used Fourier transforms? About as big a head trip as LSD. My goal in life is to estimate something using both fuzzy math AND imaginary numbers. So far I've only managed the latter.
Jeezus, and I thought my geek joke was obscure...
adrian_t
Mar 14 2008, 5:22 pm
Okay, that kinda makes sense. Taking the Fourier transform of i gets you a Dirac at zero frequency. Zero frequency means there are no meetings, which corresponds to a purely imaginary number of meeting per month, ie i.

Just a quick reminder for those unable to read the thread title:
we're meeting on Tuesday the 25th in Baal at 8pm to discuss Nabokov's Lolita. It's a quick read; you can still finish it easily before Tuesday.
Some kind person might book a table if we can get a rough idea of how many people are coming, so don't be afraid to post here.

Here is a link to an online version:
Lolita
Just finished. Dammit I want a real porn novel next time. Everybody better start inventing their own pseudonyms for the eventual talking about torrid loves that may come up after a few beers...
So for how many will the reservation be? I'll just be presumptuous and post who I think will be showing up:

From the not quite current issue of the New Yorker, March 10, 2008:
QUOTE
As Lolita and Humbert drive past a horrible accident, which has left a shoe lying in the ditch beside a blood-spattered car, the nymphet remarks, “That was the exact type of moccasin I was trying to describe to that jerk in the store. This is the exact type of black comedy that Cecily von Ziegesar, the author of the best-selling “Gossip Girl novels for teen-age girls, excels in. Von Ziegesar writes in the language of contemporary youth—things are cool or hot or they so totally suck. But the language is a decoy. The heartlessness of youth is von Ziegesar’s double-edged theme, the object of her mockery—and sympathy. She understands that children are a pleasure-seeking species, and that adolescence is a delicious last gasp (the light is most golden just before the shadows fall) of rightful selfishness and cluelessness.

The wicked joy of the “Gossip Girl novels.
by Janet Malcolm
http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atla...currentPage=allThe heartlessness of youth? I think that's totally not what Lolita's harshness is about. Humbert Humbert says on page 284 of my edition:
QUOTE
She would mail her vulnerability in trite brashness and boredom, whereas I, using for my desperately detached comments an artificial tone of voice that set my own last teeth on edge, provoked my audience to such outbursts of rudeness as made any further conversation impossible, oh my poor, bruised child.
I think he's actually a reliable narrator. Looking forward to lots of disagreement at the discussion tomorrow night.
Oh and of course as this novel's been "done to death", there's plenty of secondary literature out there -- anyone reading any? I don't intend to, but I'll listen to anyone who does...

Unfortunately, UpQuark and I won't be there this time. I'm still nursing a cold, and UpQuark hasn't read the book (again). Have fun!
I'm still trying to convince hubby that he needn't read it again, it's only been ten years since he did... not getting very far there.

6. ranjithvenkatesh (not really sure about this one)
7. ashtown (nor this one)
The last two actually haven't been online for a while. And they never said they were coming, I'm just trying to coerce encourage them.
I have reserved the big long table in Baal's book room -- ten people can fit there. Anyone else want to show up?
adrian_t
Mar 25 2008, 4:35 pm
Thanks for reserving the table.
Feel free (or rather, obliged) to bring suggestions for books to read in April and May.
Forgot to say the table's reserved under the name Toytown.

I have to say sorry for not making tonights meeting - Nightowl and I have just walked in after a 4 hour drive back from Berchtesgarten. We went for the day on Monday and stayed over. I even managed to finish Lolita even though it wasn't my cup of tea, with me having a 12 year old daughter it was a little disturbing. I hope the meeting went well and look forward to the next book and next meeting. SORRY

Yeti said the movie was totally different, but only the later movie, the earlier movie was again different. Will type more when I've gotten the beer out of my system. Adrian_t came up with suggestions for the next two times, including a real porn novel just like I wanted. Kindof.

Mar 26 2008, 12:27 pm
I'm sure UpQuark will reconsider reading the books if there's porn on offer.
What was the choice for next month?
Gen
Mar 26 2008, 12:35 pm
I think it's month after next that we thought we'd do the porn thing, but as far as I'm concerned we can change the order. Adrian remembers the titles.
I wanted to preserve my topic title in case it gets changed:
TT Munich book reading and discussion club, new and improved with extra porn added
Ah, nice. Nice to meet ranjithvenkatesh, but the guy who wanted to
start another club didn't show up. I suppose he could start a non-porn book club if he wanted.
Yeti
Mar 26 2008, 1:28 pm
Has the book club been porn again?
The book proposed for next month was
"The Sea" by John Banville. Winner of the Man Booker prize in 2005.
I think the porny one was going to be Philip Roth's
Portnoy's Complaint.
Yeti
Mar 26 2008, 1:37 pm
Correct. The porn one of course slipped my mind.
Now you've made me feel dirty.

Just updated the list on the
Munich Book Club Wiki page. The
public library has a couple copies of
The Sea too.

Where would be the next meeting.
adrian_t
Apr 17 2008, 10:21 am
Any venue suggestions? I do like Baal, but I'd be happy to try something else if anyone were to suggest a different place.
I'm umm just starting the book though so haven't time to research anyplace... but actually I've heard such good things about
Bar Centrale, how about there? Adrian, you student, can you take care of reservations? I'll check here again before heading wherever from my brand-new office job tomorrow.
Who all's coming anyhow?

Good grief, porn postponed and interest has died?

UpQ and I won't make it this time, unfortunately. We had the date wrong, and thought it was next week (which we also would not have been able to make, incidentally). Next month we have family visiting, so won't be there either.
We'll try to be there for the June meeting.
adrian_t
Apr 22 2008, 4:16 pm
Um, I think the meeting is next week. That's what it says in the title.
Um yes. Next week.

Apr 22 2008, 4:24 pm
Just to avoid confusion:
Our next meeting is on Tuesday the 29th of April at 8pm. The venue has yet to be decided, but will probably be
Bar Centrale.
The book to discuss is
The Sea by John Banville. It won the Man Booker prize and really is rather good. It's easily available and easy to read in a day, as long as you have the OED or equivalent handy.
If you plan to come, which you are welcome to do, it would be a good thing to post here so we know approximately how many places should be reserved.

Apr 22 2008, 4:53 pm
Oh, so it IS the last Thursday (not the 4th Thursday). I got confused.
I'll be in Chicago next weekend, but UpQ may feel like coming along.

Inessa, it's

Tuesday the 29th. The last
Tuesday of the month.

I'm horrified that I wrote Thursday twice.
It's true what they say about pregnancy making you stupider.

What excuse can I use when I'm confused? I'm neither blond nor pregnant, and probably never will be.
Have a good time in Chicago, Inessa!
And Gen, I don't have an accent. It's everyone else that speaks funny.
I meant your typing accent.
So how do you like my new topic title? Nice eh?
Who's coming?
1. Gen thinks it's high-larious

I'm aware that I've missed I-don't-know-how-many meetings, but I'm in for May. What's the book?
adrian_t
May 14 2008, 12:42 pm
I'm very unlikely to be around for this meeting, but I do hope that a lot of other people attend. Portnoy's Complaint is a really light read and a good laugh.
Well someone's already checked out the Munich Library's copy so I'll have to get it from
Amazon.
We can already begin discussing where we'll meet though...
