I'm very much enjoying this book, looking forward to discussing it. I'd like to suggest somewhere on the list of non-smoking establishments in Munich for the next meeting -- I don't know how the venue is currently established.

Hello!
I'll be moving to Munich in a few weeks' time and just wanted to respond to the welcome for newbies -- I'll be one soon and am looking forward to meeting up to discuss with all of you! I won't make it for the October meeting but will (hopefully) make it for November.

I don't know how the venue is currently established.
Neither do we. At this point, the group is small and amiable enough that the venue sorts itself out without any drama. I won't be around for Oktober, so anything is fine with me. Have we already mentioned that "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is the book for November? And that the (almost) regular meeting day has been moved to the final Tuesday of each month?

Hemingway, yay! That's certainly a Tale Told for November...

Current status for the October meeting is that four of the regulars won't be there. Given the paucity of regulars, this means that the location won't sort itself out anytime soon. So, if anyone- anyone at all- wants to discuss Possession, suggest somewhere to do so. Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

does the 8 pm time mean more a place where we can eat too? Who else is coming this time anyway, I have no Überblick of who regulars are now. Or newbies either for that matter.
I'll go ahead and suggest
Feuerberg, where I've never been, and
Champor, which I always enjoy.

Actually, I believe five of the regulars have already said they can't come - the sixth has remained silent. Gen is in fact the only confirmed participant. Bit of a crap situation really. Any thoughts on postponing the meeting?
pfft. postponing is fine with me.

Hi, I'm a newbie. Are you postponing October's meeting due to participation? If so, does that mean the discussion in Nov. will be Possession or will you skip Possession, moving straight to Hemingway? If you decide to hold the Oct 30 discussion, I will attend. Otherwise, I look forward to meeting you all in Nov.
I don't want to skip it, having finished it last night, but I don't know if anyone else is reading it. I could use the 30th free myself though now...

I've just arrived back in Germany - sorry about the lack of communication from me. I suggest sticking to the chosen book for November, and coming back to Possession for December. I did read it and I'm sure it will make for a good discussion.
Please tell me the Munich - Date,Time,Venue and Book for November and December. I would like to come.

We'll be meeting on Tuesday 27 November at 8 pm at our house. Newcomers are welcome! Please PM me or UpQuark for address details.
The book is Hemingway's, For Whom The Bell Tolls. We checked yesterday at the English Hugendubel and they didn't have it on the shelf (though we were too lazy to ask if they perhaps had it in the stock room).

So, it appears that we trudged all the way to Hugendubel on Saturday to look for the wrong book. Because we're dim. I can happily report that they don't have any copies of A Farewell to Arms. For all I know, they may have 15 copies of For Whom the Bell Tolls.
The
Munich Readery had a copy as of earlier today, but I got a PM from a newbie saying that she may swoop in to pick it up, so it may be gone.
UpQuark is heading to London tomorrow, and could probably be convinced to bring back a copy or two from Waterstons, though you'd have to PM him and ask really nicely.
I checked out the copy from the
Gasteig, but there may be more than one.

Had this very tome in my hands today while moving bookshelves so that the electrician could laugh at my heating. If I get a chance to reread it again before Tuesday I would like to come along.

I'm not done yet but will be by Tuesday. I must admit to having been a bit shocked at the length of the book when it arrived - I was expecting something like The Old Man and the Sea.

I will unquestionably NOT have the book finished, and UpQuark hasn't even picked it up yet, but the meeting is at our place tonight at 8:00 pm. We'll have snacks! If you plan on coming and/or need address details for the new apartment, please PM me.

The book for January is Possession by A.S. Byatt. Our meeting will be near the end of the month, so you have plenty of time to read the book. As always, new people are welcome. Watch this space for details on date and location.

We will be meeting on Tuesday the 29th of January at my place, starting at 20:00. PM me if you need my address and directions. Possession is well worth reading and has been made into a movie, so nobody has any excuses not to join in. All are welcome.

I've actually seen the movie. Gwyneth Stefani fakes a British accent. Again. Jennifer Ehle appears in the film, but she doesn't show breast. The film is the poorer for the
Ehle twins absence.

I'm going to suggest 'The Gathering' by Anne Enright, for the February book. I don't know if the female lead will need to go topless in the movie adaptation, but it did win the Mann Booker prize in 2007.
Our February gathering will be Tuesday, 26 February, in the evening. Venue TBD.

I can't think of anything better to say to remind everyone of our meeting next week than what I said in my previous post:

Don't be shy - I know you are all just dying to come.
Are we supposed to bring snacks or wine? (Keeping a running list of who's bringing what will bump the thread.

While nobody should feel obliged to bring anything, extra snacks would definitely not be frowned upon. I've got wine covered.

I'm imagining Adrian's fridge filled top to bottom with wine, and devoid of anything else. Sadly, we won't be there to see it, we'll be on holiday.

Jan 25 2008, 12:33 pm
No, the fridge is reserved for beer.
Anyhow, still plenty of space for new people to join in, so get reading.
I'm bringing cookies, just so you know.

Any venue suggestions for next week? How about Baal? Also, try not to post so much to this thread - it might break under the strain.
sorry, I'll keep it down. I think
Baal would be nice, I've never been.

I've reserved for us on Tuesday 26th in Baal from 20:00. That's Kreittmayrstr. 26, close to U1 Stieglmaierplatz. There should be enough places for all people wishing to come, so don't be shy. The reservation is under the name Taruttis.
All right folks I just got a haircut this afternoon and I'm leaving it frizzy just for tonight so you all can have a laugh. Anyone else want to come by and smile you're welcome. As long as you've read the book of course

...
Baal was lovely and it was decided that we would meet there again next month. Is the next book decided upon yet Adrian? Several of the Hausfrauen are interested in attending next month but they'd like the full month to read, of course including the perhaps necessary ordering of whichever book is chosen.
Could you please post the book in bold, otherwise it tends to get lost in the effervescent chitchat. Sorry for the confusion about the cookies, that was indeed for last month's gathering.

The book for March is
Lolita by
Vladimir Nabokov. It's an easy book to get hold of here. Our meeting is on Tuesday the 25th of March at 20:00 in
Baal.
New people are always very welcome.
News from
bookmanjb:
Bookclubbers need only mention that the book is for a book club to get a 10% discount at the
The Munich Readery. At the moment they have only a collectible paperback copy of Lolita, €14,95.
In order to prevent minor misunderstandings that have happened in the past: The discount does not apply to books bought with bookstore credit or to other books bought along with the club book.
I returned
Gasteig library's copy yesterday if anyone would like to join us but hasn't got the book yet. I also created a Wiki page with a list of all the books the club has already read -- Lolita's been done before but none of the people currently attending have discussed it before, so we thought we'd give it another go.

What would be interesting is to meet twice a month. Some of us can manage 2 books a month.
(Meeting once a month, can put things on the cold easily. You miss one meeting because of work or something and you are almost off for two months)
